Strafe left to right very quickly (not just once, strafe the whole time) when running from mobs. They follow your exact path, so they'll quickly fall behind (most of the times).

Don't forget to warn everyone else by yelling "Train to zone!".

Oh man, not me! That's one of the things I really like about WoW - no zonelines!

EMPEROR CRUSH TO ZONE!

For those who don't know, there was no such thing as leashing in early MMO's like Everquest. They chased you until you died, they died, or you reached a zone line. By the time you got to a zone line, it looked like a big train of mobs.

The best part was that after the trainmaker made it across the zone, the mobs would slowly WALK back to their spawn spot, and aggro on anyone in the way, starting the train all over again.

A good train could shut down a zone for an hour or more, accumulate dozens of players killed, and cause a hell of a lot of player bickering. :)

Lol train to zones we had to worry about in ffxi too. Before they changed the way mobs spawn / despawn XD Ah, the good old days.

LOL, those were the days of REAL trains in Everquest.

If you are running, don't forget to emote /train.

Hehe it's from the first Everquest game. The mobs there didn't tether (or at least very very few of them did but those ones were raid targets). So if you agroed a mob it would chase you all over the zone until you zoned out. Once you zoned out the mobs would drop agro and head back to their spawn points. The mobs weren't tagged or linked to players so people standing by could easily get attacked as well.

People would get an add or two and get in trouble so they'd start running for the zone line. They'd get adds along the way. This is where the name 'train' comes from because it's a long train of mobs following the player. It was common courtesy to yell 'train to zone' to warn anyone not to get in the way. Some of the zones were notorious for their trains, Blackburrow, Kurns, Mistmoore and many others.

It was fun sometimes to see the really big trains sometimes you'd get around 50+ mobs chasing you. Poor bastards just entering the zone just as a train reached the zone in usually ended up dead. Ahh those were some fun memories. That's one thing I miss in WoW is the lack of trains. Trains were bad too though. Players could pull a train and try to wipe your group or raid, but sometimes those were fun to take down as well.

Blizzard added the emote /train as a joke.

Same thing in FFXI. All the low level zones were horrible about this, especially the Valkurm Dunes and Yuthunga/Yhoator Jungles.

The worst ones I saw generally occured at the Gunthak/Dulak zonelines. Someone would pull a train through the tunnels in Gunthak and zone into Dulak, only to run smack into a train that someone had pulled in Dulak. One day I think I spent 1/2 hour just zoning back and forth to avoid being hit by a train!

....so I guess I don't get the joke, but a Crawler's Nest train in FFXI sure did look humorous, especially when the one being chased was a taru with about 20 crawlers in tow.

Right before I left EQ, they made KC a hotzone again. They added new mobs and drops. Their was usually an average of 30+ people in zone. I loved seeing the "Karnors Castle, over 1 billion trains served" zoning message almost every time I zoned in. Smiley: grin

Edit to add...

A good KC train usually consisted of at least half of the zone. A 50+ mob train was normal there.

I think my record train was over 100 mobs. Of course I had them all asleep (sheeped) sitting near the zone in. Comments of 'wtf' and 'omg' were heard every time someone zoned in. The lag was insane and I'm suprised it didn't crash the zone. Of course those mobs were pretty pissed at me when my group started trying to aoe nuke them down. I didn't last long but I was laughing the whole time. I'll have to dig up my screen shot of that and post it sometime.

Eq trains were fun. Many times I would be standing at the zoneline and a guy would run by and i see half the zone following him, think "Holy ****"! and zone back.

The only tip I know for when running from mobs is:

DON'T GET DAZED!

It'll really ruin your mood.

Arrghhh! Please don't remind me of the Vlakurm Dunes trains...

If anyone got a goblin in the zone it was a mad dash for their party to the zone - then everyone near the zone entrance had to zone and then the whining started... And that was on a good day :)

The best train I ever saw was a bard literally kiting ALL of DSP. I think he had every single mob that wasn't engaged, and it ended up crashing the zone.

*shivers at the thoughts of crawler trains.* the worst part was when you would get a whole party that zoned in and started it all over again. I remember spending an hour in the nest with one other friend of mine whitteling down about fifteen crawlers that kept getting added to everytime someone would try and zone. Horrific.

Oh gawd I remember the original Mistmoore trains, where the mobs would somehow aggro from inside the castle in the deepest part of the zone all the way out on the players at the entrance. The worst part was since there was no obvious combat flags, you had no idea it was coming until the every-mob-in-the-dungeon freight train collided with your face.

Now I feel old. :(
