Are you a clicker?Follow

#1 Nov 19 2006 at 12:40 AM Rating: Good
Alright, so I've been lurking in these forums for a few days after making my first account on Allakhazam. Before I was a vivid poster in both Thottbot and the actual WoW Blizzard forums, but after hearing outstanding recommendations for this site, I thought I might try it out.

Anyways, I'm going to attempt to start some good discussion here.

My question is: Are you a clicker?

Do you click to cast your spells? Do you cast with your mouse, and move with your keyboard?

When I first joined WoW, my first MMO, I was a clicker. I kept this habit up for a few months, until I decided to PvP on my friend's rogue. After doing that, I decided then and there that I just wouldn't be able to keep up and play as well without moving with my mouse. So I "evolved" into moving with my mouse and casting with my keyboard.

I found alot of things alot easier, first off kiting, and I got much better/faster at reacting to things, especially rogues.

So, what do you think of clickers? Do you think they can keep up with non-clickers? Do you think that clicking is alright to do, I mean, I'm fully for people to play the way they want... Are you a clicker?

P.S. Feel free to flame me if I failed at discussion topic. D:

I'm a clicker, was in SWG and also WoW. TBH I don't know how to do it the other way, it just seemed natural to click when I first loaded up wow and I do fine.

I'm a warlock and priest so I guess it's not to much of a disadvantage where as a clicking rogue might have problems. I should try just useing my keys but can't get my head around it since I've been a clicker for so long.

I couldn't not click as my friends tried to stop me.

Something I thought up, was I unbinded my move keys. Couldn't move with WASD or the arrow keys. I HAD to use my mouse to move around and my keyboard to cast. That was how I trained myself to use my keyboard.

You might give it a try?

The way I move is to use my "WASD" keys then my mouse to swing the camera around as well as click spells.

I've tried other ways but I seem more focused in trying to get a fast camera pan & tilt then neglect to hit my spells. I think I'm doing something wrong but my original way has always worked out fine for me.

It definitely takes some getting used to at first, but faster casting = good stuff.

Still, as a warlock, especially at level 60, all the things you need to cast and keybind can be overwhelming...

I played EQ, I've always used the keyboard to cast. I don't even like using the mouse to select targets, usually using tab.

Well it is in any instance that you need to perform two actions at once (i.e. a pet command and a spell cast). Clicking is also highly detrimental when needing to use split second reaction spells such as spell lock.

Clickers can certainly do ok and it is dependent on the speed/variety of abilities needed to use for the class, but they will still be slower than a player using predominantly key bindings.

Because i only really do pve,I move with my keyboard and cast with it too (unless Im running away from something). I dont really understand the keybinding though, so i use keys to cast from action bar 1, and then click spells on my other action bars.

I'm half-clicker.

I move with WASD, move with mouse, also move camera with mouse, use skills with mouse(will come to this in a second), click skills with mouse, and click skills from numbers.

I configured my mouse from Key Bindings so, lets say I'm on my Shaman, I roll the middle button forward, it does Frost Shock, I roll it backwards, it does Earth shock and when I push it, it does Purge. Its EXTREMELY fast and handy in pvp.

Also same thing for my Rogue:

Forward - Sinister Strike
Backward - macro with Kidney Shot or if its on CD, Eviscerate
Press down - Gouge

Then theres spells I don't use that much, for example, all tradeskills, some totems, trinkets, all that kind of stuff, I put them into the actionbars which cannot be activated by pushing the numbers on keyboard.

Works for me.

I don't even use WASD to move all that much. I just hit autorun, then pan my camera with my mouse.

I use my keyboard for casting, as well, unless I play my Shaman, where I click my totems. Everything else is bound to my keyboard. I take that back, I have only the first two actionbars bound. The rest of them I click.

I played FFXI for nearly two years, so I'm used to moving around on the Keypad. So it was an easy switch for me to bind those keys (I threw in *, -, and + to make twelve) to my actionbar. Then I would use WASD to move around, because my hand is off the mouse.

That sounds a neat idea. I think I'm going to give that a try on an alt and see how it goes.

Forward - Shadowbold
Backward - Fear
Press down - Death coil

I think would work well in pvp.

Although I always used the mouse to move, I was a spellcast clicker until my first time in AQ20. People's health would go down so fast, and my priestly addons seemed best suited for a 5 man group. So, I ditched the healing addons, and use the 1-6 keys for my shield and heals. I can place my fingers on keys 2-5 and keep them there for fast casting.

Hehe, for my Warlock it goes

Forward - Curse of Agony
Backward - Corruption
Press down - Fear

Since I've noticed at times, that if you are scrolling forward hecticly, it can kind of 'backfire' when the roller goes back 1 tick and it can cast the spell on the Backwards slot. Hence, I keep fear in the Press Down. That, and I'm not high enough to have Death Coil. :p

I come from FFXI, and changing has been hard.

Especially because I do something new everyday.

One day I move with mouse, the next WASD the next with the arrows.

It's baaad...

I'm a hybrid.

My right hand is reserved for the mouse and I only let go of the mouse to type something. My left hand does all the hotkey spamming as well as WASD for movement. The most used spells are keybound around my left hand. 1-5, F, Shift + F, E, Shift + E, etc. I have some features keybound to my mouse which luckily holds a number of buttons that you don't use normally.

That being said, I've seen clickers who did better than me. A lot of people do better than me and they're clickers.

I think it's like when my dad writes on a computer. He's old enough to remember the typewriters and so he uses a two-finger system, even on a computer (he almost breaks the keys when he hits them), but even so, he types almost as fast as I do with my self-taught ten-finger system.

A lot of it has to do with adaptation, I guess.

I usually use it, but I'm trying to stop. It majorly backfired on me once in Ubrs, the last lot of spawns before Rend, we had 2 left, 1 died, I tab targeted and fired and *just* as it finished casting I realised Tab had selected one of those Orc Spectators. Which promptly ran down. And attacked. Then Rend burst into the room. The raid (and myself) were not happy. :(

I am not a clicker. I use a Nostromo N52, and the arrow keys to move around. I can scroll through action bars for pretty much everything. There is a button I mapped to tab to select targets. Pretty simple really.

I do a bit of both.

On feen, I have several hotbars setup utilizing the first 4-5 buttons (they are the easiest to reach quickly when I need to). His normal setup is pretty lame, but I don't need that fast reaction times when I'm burning through a rotation.

The rest of the stuff is just clicked on (Rapid fire, Berserking, trinkets, etc)

Moving when fast stuff is needed (i.e. not just running around) is usually with W and right mouse to turn, and Q and E to strafe. While kiting, I go both mouse buttons to move and use the keys for my kiting shots.

On dithers, I have his 5 most important spells in 1-5 (Flash, Renew, Shield, Heal(3), Greater Heal). I normally click to target the group members (via party/raid window) and cast heal, then click the next target if needed while that heal is casting. Haven't had a problem with it yet.

It does change in some cases, i.e. Vael. I go Holy Nova, SW:P, Smite, Flash Heal in that order, since most of the time I'm just pounding on the 1 key.

i for one do both naturally, im a priest so i used about two or 3 spells which i activate with my fingers on the key board, but im also using my mouse to bring trinkets down on the numbered skill bar, and constantly changing certain things, (2 min. cooldown trinkets cooldown faster then you think) i move and select my targets with the mouse for the most part, i also move around with my wasd butons, i back pedal quite often, you cant see whats behind you when you are trying to look where you are goin....

I move with WASD - that being said, I strafe with the mouse (A or D and holding mouse), pan the camera around and change my direction with the mouse and I have all my spells/abilities key binded.

I started doing that when I started playing a Rogue, made a big difference.

I tried moving purely with the mouse, and maybe I just don't have the hang of it, but it doesn't seem all that precise.

My system is strange but works really effectively thanks to my freakishly fast reflexes. I use my arrow keys to move while using my mouse to click on my spells, if I'm being stunlocked I can use the mouse to move 180 degrees instantly and can usually ***** a rogue over.

If global cooldown were eliminated than I can see where that would be an issue.

I'm a heavy clicker.

I only use my keyboard to walk, write and spam Lesser Healing Wave when I'm raiding with my Shammie and need to heal and switch targets a lot. (Click target with mouse and press the "8" button for a LHW, works great.)

For the rest of my skills I use my mouse. Mostly I've managed to put them in such a logical way that most skills I need to click in a specific order are next to each other. Works even great with Rogue PvP.

I just can't remember every key-binding.Smiley: frown

I know some people with this problem, which is why I left my bars up so I could see which spells were bound to which keys for a long time. Eventually I just memorized them, and didn't need the bars anymore.

If you give it a try, it shouldn't take more then a day or two for you to get the hang of casting with your keyboard...

And like I said earlier, unbind your move keys from WASD and the arrow keys, to make you have to move with your mouse.

I do a little of both, but I would classify myself more of a non-clicker. I try to avoid mouse use as much as possible, 'cause it brutalizes my wrist.
