I was in my local Game station today and noticed a copy of World of Warcraft: Dungeon Companion on sale, unfortunately it was behind the counter and in shrink wrap.

My question is this, has anyone brought it and does it contain useful information?

I was going buy it but at £16.99 I wasn’t going to buy a guide that isn’t that useful.

In my 25+ years of gaming, guides for sale are rarely helpful or worth the money spent. I have culled much more from a paragraph in the forums than an entire chapter of most guides. Good luck and save your money.

Thanks Verucassault I might just do that, the only reason I wanted it is so I could read it on the bus to and from work and learn about the dungeons and raids.

I wouldn't recomend buying gaming guides for MMOs. The problem is things are always changing over time in these games. Some info you get will be outdated and different by the time you even do those quests, dungeons, mobs, etc. Most of the usefull information will be basic strategies and how to do deal with different situations. A lot of this type of information is something you'll learn as you go anyways, which can be part of the fun.

I would save your money and use online forums and guides. Printed material can take months and even years to update new and changed information. Online material can and usually is updated the same day it's changed.

VVillow posted about this before.

He said it was very useful and had detailed maps, quest lists, and loot tables for every boss. Worth it? Up to you.

If you get the ATlas add-on, you'll have in-game detiled maps of all instances. The rest of that information is here, on Alla. Why spend money you don't have to?

It's handy and nice to read or bring somewhere to read up if you're into WoW...I have the original Brady Strat guide, hell I still read it for fun, but hey, that's just me =)

I bought the Atlas a while ago and found it very helpful - still do. IMO, maps and atlas books like the WoW Atlas or this dungeon guide we're talking about are a lot different than an actual strategy guide like the original one released for WoW.

Is it worth it? That's up to you. But I've found the Atlas worth every penny, and intend to buy the dungeon guide book as well.

I bought the guide even knowing that all of the info is available either through a mod or online. I have only read 1/3 of it so far and already it is worthwhile.

Not only is it entertaining, the information is fairly well written by a few actual guild people who have successfully raided for a while (or so it seems).

In addition it contains quest information related to each instance. This has been handy before going into a new instance just to maximize my effort while there.

The strategies I am sure are pretty good but not soley the end all for each. Nice to have all of the loot info, specific encounter strategies and quest info all in one concise viewable place that you can refer to in-game without Alt-Tab'ing.

Personally I am enjoying it, and it is helpful in my preparations for future raiding.

Of course experience will ultimately be the best teacher but since I just did my first BRD run the other night, I was definitely better prepared than I would have been.

I would recommend it.

The 40 man stuff was written by Hocken of Pacifist. More than a few guilds used their posted guide to Onyxia and MC. The guide for BWL and AQ40 seems right on target as well. If you are working into end game then it is worth it to read up on what to expect and how to get past it.
