Hey, I'm thinking of changing from FFXI to WoW. I use a controller with FFXI and I was wondering if WoW can use a controller. I don't like the W,A,S,D movement keys. So any feedback would be appreciated. ^^ thanks

I'd get used to the keyboard. Wow is a fair bit more complex than FF11. No controller under the sun will work with WoW.

Not at all - you can use the arrow keys too.

In fact I have almost everything I do mapped to my NUM-PAD.

I have left hand on movement keys and right hand on NUM-PAD.

Mouse is used sometimes but not particularly often.

I come bearing the UBER CONTROLLER! Too bad you can't jack it into a computer, but if any controller could handle WoW, it would be this. I mean, it has enough buttons for all your hotkeys... Pedals for jump/run/walk, Joysticks for camera/direction.

If you're dead set against using the regular keyboard, you could use this thing. No idea how well it works though, you may want to find some opinions on it.

Nope can't do it, can't keep a straight face while saying this.

There is more button mashing to do in WoW, you'll never get it to work with a controller.

WASD is a slight sacrifice for the huge gain a keyboard gives.

I've had experiences with other z-boards, I absolutely love 'em, you really notice it in FPS games, I've been hesitant to buy the WoW one, because I'm really not sure how much use I would get out of it. The main thing they do is move everything into a more logical position, and they look cool. However, you still need to be used to playing on a keyboard to get any real good use out of it.

I fail to see how the interface is any more "complex" than FFXI's is.

In both you would use a controller to move and hit buttons to use abilities. Both games have a set of buttons that can be scrolled through to different sets in order to select many different things. In short, you'd use the controller for the exact same things.

The issue is that, to the best of my knowledge, WoW's default interface isn't built to allow you to select those buttons with a cursor, as would be needed by the controller. You could theoretically build controller functionality into WoW in a variety of different ways though, since its interface is so adaptable.

I personally like the keyboard in any MMO, because I open windows every half-second just to look at them for as long, so I like a simple hotkey for those windows. I also already have to use the keyboard to chat, and using yet another device is both excessive and takes me away from chatting as much.

Often overlooked, a straight answer. No

Whatever your playing style maybe, looks like you'll only have a mouse and a keyboard to work with. Enjoy!

I Barely use the keyboard to move. I use the Dual Mouse Button press and the Num Lock key locks your running position for long distance treks, I steer with the mouse button while locked as well. i pretty much bound the left half of my keyboard for everything else. you'll get use to it. JOIN US!

    Yeah ... you're dreaming.

FFXI lacks INSTANT ATTACKS. In FFXI, you can start casting one ridiculously long cast spell and hit L2, scroll through options, and be ready with the next spell when the first spell is finished casting.

You can call it "button mashing" if you want, but skilled players call it timing. For example, if you're a Rogue fighting against a caster, and you see the caster start casting a spell, you need to use your Kick ability - NOW! You can't open a menu, scroll to the right button, pick it, and still expect to interrupt a 2 second cast. FFXI is simply a slower paced game. There is no fault in a slower pace. It is afterall a PvE game, and a much more relaxed game in terms of pace, and in a way that's a good thing.

To the OP - A combination of keyboard and mouse is a lot more functional than a controller. About a year ago when I first played WoW in stress test 2 phase I felt the same as you do now. I was used to my PS2 controller (which I had plugged into my PC via a USB adapter). Getting used to the keyboard/mouse was a bit strange for a day or two... but by the time I got to L10 I never really gave it much thought again. There are SOOOOO many ways to customize your control setup that with a little bit of effort you can definitely come up with something that suits you.

    to the OP:

your controller should be able to link one analog stick to ADWS and the other to your mouse movement. that way movement can be with one stick and the other moves the mouse on screen with right and left triggers serving as mouse clicks. i moved from FFXI and was determined to do this in order to play WoW and i did. just map the buttons with your controller software.

btw-after playing this way at home on my desktop and w/o my controller when away from home on my laptop (who wants to be the nerd with a controller in his backpack at all times!!! then everyone would know i'm addicted!) i eventually just converted to keyboard controls. it's not bad at all and can be done faster with the mouse than with an analog stick.

but it can fairly easily be done, but i had to find that out myself.

    hope that helps.

    peace.

I am a huge controller freak, I did the strat guide for the layout on a Saitek Wireless for FFX. I have the WoW zBoard, (and though it's nice looking, I don't know that I'd really recomend spending the cash on it as the utility isn't really that enhanced over a regualr keyboard.)

Anyway, as far as the Ideal set up for WoW here is my recomendation:

I recomend a Logitech MX Laser 1000 And a Nostromo Speed Pad n52

Together these controlers make WoW a breeze. There are a million ways to configure the two, and someday I'll post my favorite.

But basicly here is how it works, first thing get the updated drivers for the Logitech mouse as it allows you to configure the left / right action of the mouse wheel to a key stroke.

Then basicly you set up the buttons on the mouse (there are 10 total,) to act as either modifyer keys or targeting buttons.

then in WoW use the key binding setting to program the side bars and addtional bottom bars with modifiyer keys.

For example, you set the mouses scroll forward button to be ALT+CNTRL then in WoW Set your Right Side Bar keys to ALT+CNTRL+1 thru ALT+CNTRL+10 (of course - and = for 11 and 12).

On the nostromo you have the first 10 keys just set up to be 1 - 10 and then I use the 13 and 14 key as - and =.

What this means is that anytime I want to use something from the right side menu bar in WoW, you just use your index finger to press the forward scroll key on the mouse, and the # 1 key on the nostromo pad.

    Boom! the command is executed.

What this Really means is that after a very short play time, you have every key that is up on the screen fairly easily in your mind... thats 60 key strokes that you can get too, super fast, with out hardly having to move your fingers.

the other extreamly cool thing is that the Nostromo makes macros an extream sinch. you can press a button to change what all the other buttons are set too, (that means you have 4 total sets on the nostromo.) so one set could be set up for movment. one set for Macros, another for the 1 - 0 - = keys etc.

anyway on the macro set, you can easily assign multiple Spells or actions and delays between them, it's very nice to hit one key and have a series of actions just auto happen.

ok, thats my opinion. some day soon, I'll make a real guide with some examples and suggestions on exactly how to set up the keys for a mage or Druid etc.

    thanks again,

i loved FFIX with a ps2 controller hooked to my PC
told my friends i wouldnt play WOW without using a controller...

i play WOW now with a dualshock pro II or something like that
its a logitec controller (midgrade/not the cheepest but not
the highest price) that i can program all the buttons and
sticks to be a keystroke... so "a" is joystick left,
"d" is joystick right... bla bla bla

the only setback ive had is the camera. WOW (unlike FFIX)
doesnt let you free rotate the camera view around your body.
so i had to set up 2 keybindings with a good standard view
(looking down) and one with a good uphill view.

using a controller is a bit of a pain when you have to put it
down and use the mouse to click on items and stuff

but for open field solo killing it works good for me
as a rogue i think i move better with the sticks

i am going to look into the above few posts.
Microsoft Sidewinder Strategic Commander sounds interesting
but i have NO idea how it acutally works... for the camera
interface of WOW a controller that mimics the mouse movement
would be what i need, then i would never have to put down
my controller to move the pointer, plus mouse movement is what
is required to move the camera (up and down at least)

MMORPGjunkie sounds like he's on the right track, but its still
key entries and not "stick" entries... (but i still might try it)

but yeah, you can use a controller as long as you can program the controller to be keyboard entries. a USB convertions of a PS2 controller will not work (that was my first try) and a standard USB or gamecontroller port controller will not work either, WOW will not reconize joystick entries as an input.

I've thought about it too but there is just too many scenarios where you would be missing th ecommand you need, even with a few shift buttons you could not have enough to make it work well and even if you did could you remember all of them? Yes I feel your pain, WASD blows and it took me weeks to get the sidestepping thing down with Q and E...
