I find it's almost as fun with dialup.. i have a 40 Paladin and a 32 Warlock and it's not like i love dialup, but i can still enjoy the game using it.

One of my friend (his profile is down in my sig as 'Foewounder') plays on dial up.

As you can see, he's been able to do quite well for himself.

He lags a lot in main cities, in some area of MC (the imps and core hound packs kill his connection) and Alterac Valley is totally unplayable for him.

He'll get random lag spikes from time to time and he does have some latent lag that impairs him a bit in pvp (hard to interupt a 1.5 second cast spell with shield bash for exemple).

But overall, it plays just fine.

We have a few members in our guild that connect via dialup.

I can tell you that the game is definatly imparied, but playable. You'll have a few times of irritation and aggrivation, but it's better then missing out entirely. Broadband connections are extremely useful for most online gaming, but most MMOs can run without. I would recommend cable or DSL if at all possible in your area. If you can't get it, then dialup will at least get you online.

having only just moved onto broadband a week ago i can definately attest its playable, but as tyrandor pointed out there are a number of areas it will cause problems.

the only things missing from the above list would be the flight points can get stupidly laggy when people go AFK on their flights and sit around the point and some services disconnect you every 2 hours, which can be VERY annoying when doing instances, but as long as you keep an eye on the time and relog just before entering an instance in most cases you are fine.

welcome to WoW :)

Had a RL friend play WoW on Dial-up for a while before upgrading to Broadband.

His experience was like the other's said playable with lag only in the Main cities and TM (pre BG Smiley: lol )

And downloading Patches sucks...Even an extra 10 min downloading is too long sometimes. Smiley: grin

Direct Way is the Satellite internet. Do not go that route. The latency is HORRIBLE !!!! I had Direct Way back in the Diablo 2 days and I could not play it because of the 3-5 second delays. Now as you can see this was Diablo 2 days they may have gotten better but I doubt it. Sending a signal out some 36 Thousand miles into space creats to much lag. I would go Dial-up if you had to.

Find out who your Cable and Phone provider are going to be you might be very suprised to find out that you can get HighSpeed internet at the spot you are moving. Most digital cable providers have broadband internet too.

Good luck in which ever route you go and happy leveling. NOOB 8D just kidding.

I second the advice - DO NOT go with satellite. I'm not sure about DirecWay, but if you visit Star Band's website (if they even still exist), it says specifically that it is not recommended for online gaming. The 3-5 second delay will kill any chance at making split second decisions and maneuvers. You'd be killed before you even knew you were being attacked.

I play on dialup mostly and it works perfectly fine. I don't get broadband where I live. However, I am experimenting with a cellular modem which is supposed to be as fast as DSL. It's definitely faster than dialup. However, I seem to be having latency issues that I'm not sure if it's my connection or the server. A friend on broadband tells me his latency has been high lately too. It worked well the first week, then lately I've been getting a lot of lag. For instance I'll notice my pet quit following me or there are suddenly no mobs around. I'm still trying to figure out of there's something interfering with it on my end or if cellular just isn't good for gaming. I'm not sure why I had no issues at all in the first week, then suddenly I can't get a good connection (despite a good signal.) I'm rambling now, so I'll stop.

Go ahead with dialup. You'll be fine. Updates suck.
