In-game do you consider bad grammar and spelling to be a sign of a bad player?

Or are you just generally frustrated by grammatical ineptitude?

I tend to notice people who can't spell and use the words "gay" and "Hella" aren't good group members in most cases.

But correlation isn't causation. I'm sure there's a spelling bee champ who pulls whole instances and wipes his party, but I imagine it's less likely than a grammatically challenged leet person doing so.

I don't necessarily think it's a sign of a *bad player. It can be. Howerver, I think it's just the sign of an immature and/or lazy person.

I do generally tend to avoid grouping with people who use 'u' 'r' and 'y' it's a big pet peeve of mine. I've been known to tease people about it as well. I'll have to admit I've played with many good players who 'can't be bothered' to take the extra half second it takes to type 'yo' in front of 'u'.

Also, I won't answer questions posed to me in the form of 'u know <question>?' I'll just ignore a player if they can't respect me enough to adress me properly.

Edit: Not that sign of a 'Mad' player but the sign of a 'Bad' player.

if its someone that types like this but is understandable then i consider them to be ok

however if tis sum1 dat talks liek dis den i dun even bother lolasmo

If they sound like an idiot, they're an idiot. That's the general rule that I follow. The difference between idiocy and laziness is easy to see if you look carefully enough. I'm sorry, but if you can't make yourself understood via text then you don't deserve a slot in my raid/instance groups.

I've literally made a macro for the idiots in Orgrimmar. They'll say something akin to:

"i look 2by [insert poor description of what they want"

...and I just hit my trusty macro of

Yeah, I'm a jackass about this, but it's funny because the only people that will run to the guy's defense are people with language that's even more butchered.

its somewhat conditional for me. if someone makes extensive use of U, R, plz and the like in casual conversation while nothing stressful is going on, then i kinda see them as lazy. not necessarily bad as a player, just lazy as a person. but people play the game to unwind, so ya never know....that grammatically incorrect person could be an english teacher. i mean, you know how it goes; the plumber has the leaky pipes and so forth.

if someone starts abbreviating and using single letters for stuff in a high-stress situation, i chalk it up to efficiency. when a half dozen alliance jump my BRD en route, i dont give a damn whats said as long as my side ends things standing over their dead bodies.

That, and then there are people who abbreviate EVERYTHING.

Now, I know, there are common common common places that are always abbreviated, like UBRS, or STV, or IF, etc.... but there are some of the 'lesser known' ones (at least to me) and I'm looking at that, and going "What in the Hell does that mean?" in fact I didn't know what "UBRS" meant until I asked a friend of mine over IM... here I thought they were trying to type 'uber' or something and couldn't quite get the spelling right or something... *smirks* Hey, you never know....

You got people using abbreviations, like "ZF"... what the heck is ZF anyways? How hard is it to type out at least part of it? I mean, for UBRS, how hard is it to say "Upper Spire" or something? Its not that hard to type that out, is it?

Anyways, the "U" and "R" thing.... that irritates me too. I can understand it in the middle of battle or something, but especially on messageboards, and email, and such, there is no reason for it. That, and people who consistently refuse to captilize "I"...

Its not hard to press a couple extra keystrokes, people... not hard at all. At least, if nothing else, it makes you look like a lot less of an idiot if you'd actually type with some decent spelling and grammar. Those who abbreviate everything in casual conversation come across as a complete and total moron, and those are not the kinda people I wanna depend upon in a party. They remind me of that Leeroy person in that one video.... I don't mind the occaisonal "lol" or something like that, though.

if the person's typing is so heavily abbreviated and full of "leet" that I need a rosetta stone to translate it into english.. I'm not going to waste my time trying to answer a question that is practically illegible.

I don't correct people, but I'm always wary of people who use stuff like any1 or U. It's just silly. It takes me longer to try and type like that than to just type the real word.

I do not use words like any1 or ur or anything like that.
However since I am doing many things at the same time, (fighting, casting spells ect..) I do tend to type fast and make typos, most times I will notice and correct my typos however there are times when I will just let them slide by or I just don't notice them.

But people who type in leet speak or kiddie speak whatever you call it do drive me nuts.

I agree with Aacra, it's not the sign of a bad player, just someone who's immature or lazy.

-Sometimes it reaches a point that it just annoys the hell outta me. That's when I remember their name and make note not to group with them again.

Or English just isn't there native language.
I'm on a EU server and at least 75% of all players don't have English as there mother language and maby 10% never learned any English at school. Sometimes I really have to think hard to understand what the guy is exactly trying to tell me (and my Eng isn't top of the notch either) while he is really a good and mature player.

I think you guys are talking about a certain group of Americans who thinks it's cool to write every word in a foneticly (does that word even exist, my cat wasted my wordbook) way. But sometimes it pisses me off when a non english guy get's flamed because his grammer is like a puzzle. Not talking about this forum, this site has loads of mature and intelligent people, but try to make a few errors on the offcial forums, they'll eat you alive.

lol @ Trickybeck...

Anyways some of what ya'll have said makes sense. Some of its just being somewhat of a *******, though.

Some abbreviations that don't seem to make sense are often there for other reason. There are many abbreviations that 'flow' with your hands MUCH quicker than the actual word, even if they are only 2 or 3 letters difference. Ever wonder why lol got so popular, its a stupid phrase "laughing out loud..." but its Right Ring Finger Mid Up Mid it takes even bad typists .2 seconds to type. U R is right index up left index up... Thats SO much faster than you are, especially if your speaking casually.

For the poor kid ******* about abbreviating Zone names, there are times this is pointless but the fact is there are quite a few reasons abbreviations are in place. First off people on MMOs, especially WOW's bunch, don't have the attention span to read the following (no matter how pathetic it is) - "Zul'Farrak Group Looking for More, need a Priest and a Mage. Hitting Gahz'Rilla & Witch Doctor Zum'rah." Combine this with the fact that this message will likely have to be repeated 10 times before an entire group is collected and you'll find people getting mighty pissed at your LFG message. Also, abbreviating zones and messages like this keeps total n00blets who don't know whats going on out of the group =P~~

In defense of correct grammar in organized events I do believe propper grammar is very important. Raid leaders should even try to refrain from saying things such as 'wtf' and 'lol' just to reinforce a feeling of control and organization. Especially in open events a feeling of being 'under the direct control' of a leader can increase efficiency and reduce errors. Thats from my EQ experiences anyways.

I use abbreviations like "u" and "r" all the time in game. Not because I am lazy, but because it is more efficient and becomes a habit when trying to type fast in instance groups. I do not generally have long conversations that are not related to what is going on in the instance at that time.

I have a B.S. in Marketing, a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, and an M.B.A. Do not judge a players intelligence or skill by the use of abbreviations. If anything, I would presume the opposite to be true in regards to a players skill. Generally the need for abbreviations arises from taking on and leading more intense encounters where speed is of the essence.

I have a fair amount of grammar slack when I'm chatting in game. However I absolutely cannot stand it when people use the following:
"wad" to mean "what", u, ur, r, nub to mean "newbie or noob", "no" to mean "know", "dat" to mean "that", "ppl" to mean "people", "plz" to mean "please", y, and that's not counting people who misspell every other word.

I'm harsh on those who do not attempt to speak unerstandably. If you try and typo or don't use perfect grammar, I'm not one to jump down your throat. But the second those "u", "ur", "bcuz", y" and such get involved, I get a little annoyed.

I can understand global net lingo such as "lol", "omg", or "wtf". It's when you shorten perfectly short words (like "you" or "yes") that I get frustrated.

I kinda agree with Samurai's list, but I do use "plz" sometimes and although I dont ever say u, I do sometimes use "ure" in place of you're...

*cackle*

Oh ya also the "no" = "know" REALLY gets on my nerves... thats one of the only bad ones...

And I dont think people say n00b or nub seriously anymore, just as kinda a joke... and if they arn't saying it as a joke they are weird~

A panda walks into a cafe. He orders a sandwich, eats it, then draws a gun and fires two shots in the air.
"Why?" asks the confused waiter, as the panda makes towards the exit. The panda produces a badly punctuated wildlife manual and tosses it over his shoulder.
"I'm a panda," he says, at the door. "Look it up."The waiter turns to the relevant entry and, sure enough, finds an explanation.
"Panda. Large black-and-white bear-like mammal, native to China. Eats, shoots and leaves."

So, punctuation really does matter, even if it is only occasionally a matter of life and death.

I use abbreviations all the time. I think it's kind of stupid to make everyone wait around for you to type out full sentences and capitalize everything in order to flex some kind of grammatical muscle. Especially when you need to give out instructions to an encounter or ask a question. Typing in "wait" and then typing 2 or 3 minutes in full paragraphs with proper grammar and spelling, then checking for typos and re-reading it, just to make a simple point or give some quick instructions, well, also pretty annoying. It is to me anyway. It's not a message board, it's chat, just lighten up is what I say.

plz, thx, ppl, tho, lol, zf, ubrs, etc. you type these words often enough and everyone knows what they mean, it's pointless to get mad about it. I don't use capitalization and frequently make typos because I type fast and abbreviate. Who cares? If I can understand it and you play good, fine with me.

Sometimes it's a good indication of a bad player, but a lot of times it's just people who don't take it that seriously.

ZF = Zul'Farrack for whoever asked.

Well, I seem to be different here. When on the forums, I try to use decent grammar and spelling, whereas ingame, they are horrible. Reason being? I suck at typing, so when things are flying by i.e. guild chat, tells, general, trade, I can never keep up AND do it nice and neatly.

So alot of it is butchered and stuffed with "1337 5p34k" as they say. (minus the numbers, I don't use those)

So most of my guildmates were rather suprised to hear me on vent for the first time and learn I speak very well. I am good at playing my class, I know my job well. I talk like a total moron.

Now since we use vent, my chat is almost non-existant.

So overall, I would say yes bad grammar and spelling may spell unpleasantness (no pun intended) but it goes both way sometimes.

I don't know if bad grammer is a sign of a bad player as much as it is a sign of someone too distracted in school. I have seen some really smart people that don't know the difference between 'there', 'their', and 'they're' but can run a business department like a well oiled machine.

But I do have a problem with people who don't even try to learn.
