let me start off by saying this is NOT a racism thing, just a small question.

Ive been playing WoW for a while now, and i have a question. Where are all the black humans at? All i ever see are white guys with the long hair and a gotee. I mean out of the thousands of people playing you rarely ever see a black guy, i think ive seen maybe 3 the whole time. Do people just not want to be a black dude? Kind of odd when u think about it. I dunno maybe its just something ive noticed.. oh well just something i wanted to point out.

I mean its not like i go around looking at everyones avatar to see if they are black, its just something that dawned on me recently.

I beleive that I'm a black person trapped in a white body, but there aren't any black undead, so at least the black people don't die.

You never see her because I'm on a low-population server, and she's my alt to play when my husband isn't on with me, which is almost never given my schedule. Take the same face and hairstyle in the portrait, and change to the darkest skin and hair colors :)

I did the name as a joke after I put together her look, because everything else I could think of was taken... nobody's commented, or called a GM on me yet. It's not really copyrighted anyway, I've seen multiple characters in multiple games/movies with that name.

I think most of the players of this game are pubescent teenage American males. I was one. That explains why the largest population in the game is male Night Elf Hunters with long white hair. I'm guessing Human Paladins are for those who think the purple guys aren't hardass enough.

And any of you who don't fall under one of those categories is probably a boy playing a NE female. Shame! Shaaaaame!

Um, go horde.

I play night elf because of someone who used to be playing along with me :)

Otherwise I would have been Horde :(

To be honest, I just don't like the way they look. Putting dark skin on Anglo features doesn't give you a "black" character, by any stretch of the imagination in my opinion. My human characters have skin tone that closely matches my own (and being black/hispanic, my skin tone is a lot lighter than my father's and most closely favors my mother's side. My brothers are dark though), with only a few exceptions. Rinda, my mage, has somewhat pale skin since that was the only thing I could see borrowing from Raistlin (pre-Test). My Warlock has the absolute palest skin tone available to humans for the same reason.

I dunno, I've seen quite a few "black" characters. Usually with names like "Johnshaft" or "Pamgrier" or some derivative thereof.

I play a black human pali along with my brothers who play a black warrior and a black rouge. We are named Ghostdog, Spiritdog, and Shadowdog respectivly. We are trying to start our own guild called Buffalo Soldiers. The reasons for this are twofold, one we wanted to be diffrent and two we are Bob Marley fans. There are some nice faces in game that we think pass well for black males, and we made them bald as they look good that way. Its fun, we just wanted something to tie us together in game as we are brothers.

I dunno?

Maybe they just aren't that many black people playing WoW? I wouldn't know why tho. But hey, if I ever made a human, he'd be white - just easier to associate with the character that way. And I'm guessing a black person would make a black character - maybe not all the time, but that would probably be their first choice.

Maybe they go for other races because of that. If the best black guy you can do looks like a white guy who's stayed in the tanning machine for too long because of the model design, then you might just want to pick something else.

I'm a black human in RL. In the first BETA tried to create a black character but all the facial features were not really black. I play a dwarf and there really is no way to make my character black. I made his skin as dark as I could but the facial features are all wrong....oh well. So I gave up and made my dwarf a red haired Scottish looking model. He's black on the inside though :)

and hung like a damn Tauren....

I'll give a stab at an answer to the question.

I think first off (not that this is a good thing) racial diversity in RPG NPCs has hardly been non-existant. Nearly every RPG I've played recently the NPCs are all the kinda weird asian-white anime hybrid we've come to know and love.

I hardly see a black character, or hispanic, or any other racial feature other than white and maybe something resembling an asian/white mix.

I would imagine that RPG players are in a majority asian or white. I would also imagine that most of Blizzard's staff is also asian or white.

Moving outside the realm of humans, Night Elves, Dwarves, and Gnomes are all pretty clearly defined by previous mythology. I mean really, a black gnome??

But on the human side, I would imagine they could have been a little better about ethnic diverisity, but I imagine that in creating a game of this scope, that was something that was just not considered, or if it was, decided to leave it as simple as possible.

Racial considerations shouldn't really be involved in a fantasy setting. Much like marriage and sexuality and other real world institutions and beliefs. Generally games should be a pure fantasy setting, and if a company decides to add some aspects of real life, that's a can of worms that they can open if they wish.

I'm babbling now, so I'll just stop.

I understand what your saying, my wife is black in RL but every time she has tried to make a character in the game it doesnt really resemble anything close to a black female, so its hard to get her into games that do not allow for larger character customization.

From my experience the Gnomes are certainly trying to be black. I found their actions related to the melanin deficiency to be a rather large distraction and gave up on them.

One would think that fantasy would tranced all racial boundaries but alas I was wrong.

I think that statement proves that racial expectations are pasted on every thing. The racisim exists primarily within the person not the content.

Anyway who knows why, but you just don’t see many. Personally I think the Human Male looks like a Mongoloid, and the female dances the Macarena, so I avoid them. I mentioned my thoughts on Gnomes, or as I call them Gnerms. Dwarfs, also called Durfs, are just little balls of Odd proportions. I mean how big can a nose be? Male Night Elf shoots his bow like a Mongoloid, so I was left with Female NE, which fits in WoW lore better anyway (not a druid).

Alliance race is of little matter anyway, went Horde after I discovered just how evil the Humans are. You go kill Van Clef so that the Nobles can skip out on their bills and the Stockades is cleaning up the mess created by some overpaid warden. The Horde are really the good guys, and over there skin pigment doesn’t matter to anyone. Green, blue, black (fur) even a little purplish rot is ok, just say Thrall is a cool guy and your in. The horde even accepted the “evil” race of the Forsaken, who are just out for a little crypt to call their own.

What’s the point? I really don't have one, no answer to the question, just stating that the only option for an African-American (PC baby) is Human male and they are unappealing to many of us, so that might have a bearing on why so few are seen.

Certainly an interesting question regardless.

I'm going to assume that you are not calling me racist and just worded your statement poorly. Smiley: mad

That being said, I stand by what I said. Even if there are exception, the fantasy world has consistantly been slanted towards the white and anima-asian-white mix we all are used to seeing.

That doesn't make it right, but that's just the norm.

Can you imagine what would happen if they only allowed dark skinned characters in WoW? (basically the reverse situation?) I'd hate to hear the complaints that would bring.

I imagine they just stuck to the mainstream since that's how to make the most money. *shrug*

guilty as charged but am the horrible stereotype unfortunately. 32yr old single male, however there was a reasoning behind it. My chosen name was from my EQ character and it didn't seem to fit a male so I went the female route. I never ever lead anyone on and for the horn dogs that try to hit on me I make it perfectly clear right off I am a guy.

I do have a dark skinned male human war on another server but as others have said it just doesn't look quite right, oh well, he's passin'.

There are black dorfs though, those dang Dark iron dorfs that so enjoy attempting to blow me up are of the dark skinned persuasion.
