Server Pops: The TruthFollow

Ok. Here it is in a nutshell. I am going to answer everyone's question about Server Pops and the like. Let us take some time and really examine the situation with serious consideration to the facts.

Commonly asked questions:

1.) Why is my server so empty?

2.) I am on the Island and no one is around. Where is everyone?

3.) I am in the starting zones (Oakmyst, Forest Ruins, etc.) and no one is here. What's going on?

4.) Is EQ2 losing people left and right?

Answers:

1.) Define empty. If there are 20 people in each zone, are you considering this empty? When you really get right down to the meat and potatoes, that's not bad. How many people (barring raids) can you have in a single group? 6. That answer is always going to be the same. So if we look at this mathematically, that is a possiblity of 3 and a half FULL groups. How often do you find yourself in a full group? More often than not, it is a trio or a quartet or a duo.

2.) Most people have moved far beyond the Isle of Refuge. The majority of the people you see on the Isle are alternate characters of the high levels. These people don't really care about staying on the Isle too long. They know what's there and are ready to leave as soon as they can.

3.) Again, see point two. You are in starting zones that most people have passed by months ago. There really isn't a reason for them to stick around.

4.) This is one question I can't answer. I really don't believe we are losing people left and right. Do not be put off by the "Server Populations Suck" threads. It isn't true.

I guess the whole point of this thread is to make people realize that empty is such a loaded word. I find myself soloing and harvesting most of the time in Norrath. The less people, the better. More mobs and more harvest all for me Smiley: grin I couldn't care less if there were 100 people in the zone or 3. In fact, I always try to wait people out if I find myself in a second instance. And if you have to group, join a guild. All servers have guilds. My guild has about 50 people in it and there are usually around 6-12 people on at a time. That's a raid group right there!

So please, in closing, if there must be another Pops Suck thread, be a doll and define "empty" for us.

Just to add a bit more fuel to the fire, consider this...

Even when I am mentoring a friend or playing an alt in say tier 2, (Antonica), or tier 3, (Thundering Steppes), my goal is to move things along as quickly as possible since the zone is well known to me and I have no desire to hang out there. I already know my favorite spots to hunt at every level and where to harvest for the things I need so I only tend to spend time in what is the "newest" zone for me. Here, there is a sense of discovery and wonder. In the lower tiers, there is only a sense of "been there, done that"!

I am currently duoing with a friend of mine in T-Steppes and we are attempting to maximize her XP so that we can move on to Enchanted Lands as soon as possible. This has resulted in seeing about half the zone at lvl 25 and we will probably not see more than 2/3s of it before she reaches lvl 29. There will be time for her to return to tier 3 and "sight see" later, when she brings an alt up through the levels. For now, we want to be able to duo her with my main.

Oh, another note regarding "define empty"... most zones are HUGE and so empty becomes even more of an objective concept. There can easily be 5 or 10 of my guildies in Antonica and unless I seek them out, I might never see them, even if I spent all evening traveling around in the same zone.

And finally, busy zones are highly over rated... I always have favorite spots to XP and favorite spots to pull to. There is nothing more dissappointing than traveling to a favorite spot and finding another group there working MY mobs !!!

Well, there's a lot less players on than there were shortly after launch, so...a lot of people left. I would define "empty" as less than 5 people LFG, which has been the case most of the time I've been on. I do think some server mergers are in order.

According to MMOGCHARTS EQ2 has leveled off at slighly less than it's peak number of subscribers. There was no massive exodus shortly after launch, in fact subscribers were added steadily for 6 months or so. This data is from July, so it doesn't include new subscribers from the expansion, which probably isn't going to be significant anyway.

What you experience personally isn't a good indicator of how many subscribers a game has, which was part of Mearyk's thoughts. When a game launches everyone is the same level for a while, so you see them all. On top of that, most people playing are excited with the new game and want to play every day, which isn't normal either.

You apparently play WoW. Compare WoW now to shortly after launch. Back then, you couldn't move in newbie areas and there were hour long waiting ques to get on servers. That's gone now, newbie areas are deserted and there are no login lines. If you were only judging by your own experience you might think WoW lost players - which obviously isn't true.

LFG isn't a very good indicator either, since some people solo with no intention of joining a group, or will join if they happen into a group. Lots of people have become members of regular groups or group with guildies, so they don't need to LFG. It's true EQ2 has alienated some group oriented players, especially the ones coming from EQ1. They addressed that somewhat with the combat update.

True. I just do a "/" in the chat box and that shows how many are in that zone.

I have also found that even though there may not be someone LFG, you might be able to snag someone by asking them with a /tell or using /ooc.

In fact, a few days ago, not LFG, I was tooling around Antonica with my 24 Warden, and out of the blue got asked to help out with a named mob. I suppose they did a full search for all healers and found me. I jumped in and got some good exp out of it.

I'm always getting 'unsolicited' /tells asking me to group. I usually do unless I'm about to log for the night.

NB - Don't send someone an invite out of the blue, some people find that very annoying. Always ask in a /tell first.

This is advise worth following, I never accept blind invites unless I am on the LFG list, and I know a few others that follow the same rule. It is just a pain to have a box pop up in the middle of your screen when you are in the middle of a fight.
