Hey! I'm pretty much brand new to the game and I'm just hoping to get some advice as to which class I should pick to play first. I've already experimented a little and gotten a couple classes to 20 or so. I usually enjoy mages or rogues but have no issue healing or tanking, but I'm just looking for a class that makes me feel like I'm in control in combat. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

From what I could tell, Arcanist is a Mage that is well-rounded in ability.

Leveling Arcanist is basically a two-fer already: You get Summoner (healer) and Scholar (dps) jobs from it, and pre-30, you got access to a little healing, you've got DPS, and while solo you've got a tanking pet. Add a chocobo to that, and you've got yourself a pretty neat setup.

FFXIV doesn't have much in the way of hybrid classes, but if there ever was one, Arcanist would be it.

Now, granted I only leveled ACN to 16 thusfar, but I've done some reading up on it. It looks good on paper; I just never really got around to adding it to my list quite yet.

Got that backwards there.

When you're talking about party play, the person most in control of the combat is the tank. The tank decides where everything goes, how fast the party goes, target order, etc.

If you're looking for a dps job that can be considered "in control" I'd suggest black mage (thaumaturge) or bard (archer). Both have powerful aoe dps as well as the ability to contain situations that get out of control. Melee dps are designed to be pretty single-minded in this game. You've got a target, and your job is to make its hp bar go down. Not being able to see what's going on around you helps with this level of tunnel visioning.

Best advice though? FFXIV lets you play everything on one character. Try it all!

Whoops. lol.

You can tell I'm (not) a master of arcanist haha.

But yeah, might as well try em all. lol. I got PLD, NIN, and WHM up to 50+ and I messed around with BLM in PotD so I've a little idea of those, and each class is fun in their own way.
