FFXIV Confirmed for the Playstation VRFollow

#1 Mar 17 2016 at 3:20 PM Rating: Excellent
Pretty cool!

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/every-ps4-playstation-vr-game-confirmed/1100-6435715/

Transmigration, your post about wanting more sandbox exploration elements in the game is even more meaningful now. Flying through Eorzea with virtual reality would already be cool enough... swimming, climbing and just more exploration in general would be even better!

Will be cool to see how this is implemented. I wish Catwho was still around to answer questions about how development on something like this would look. Makes me wonder though if a VR Eorzea is something we might see when 4.0 rolls out.

That PS VR is going to be a bit pricey though... $400 off the shelf.

Doubt I'll be jumping into it right away -- and I think I'd rather get VR for my PC rather than the PS4 -- but still, this is pretty dang sweet.

Tekken 7 too... that'll be interesting.... also nauseating.

I can definitely see the potential in an MMO that utilizes VR. It'd be super cool for sure... but I'd have to think the game would need to be designed for it for it to be more than a novelty. I can't imagine playing any current MMO in first-person mode for instance. Losing the ability to see behind and, more importantly, under you is just too debilitating.

I'll be really interested to see what they do with it. I'm not generally an early adopter for tech, but if this can be done well and doesn't just instantly fade into the mists like the first attempt at VR back in the 90s it'll be the next logical step in gaming and I'm looking forward to it.

For sure... I don't see VR as being anything you'd do in FFXIV for big battles with lots of mechanics. But it could definitely be cool for things like treasure hunts, beastman dailies, gathering, even things like four-man dungeons or Diadem.

This is such a "new" technology though, in terms of what it has become today. I'm even more excited to see what starts rolling out in a few years from now.

I hope it takes off, could be very cool for MMOs. That being said, I have a feeling it's going to go the way of 3d televisions. No one will care once the novelty wears off.

Aside redoing a hell of a lot of this game to support it, back at TGS they said it's something they're just playing around with and in a later interview they said there won't be "full support" as they can barely get people to make content on this game as is, so stretching further to add in VR content would be....a weird option (since people love to talk about niche audiences and all.) They said if they ever did add it, it would be something you can do similar to how playing in FP is already an option almost no one does with current design lol.

Especially since the VR demo(s) were made specifically for it so they would have to no doubt triple development to work in VR.

VR is going to be similar to 3D movies in some ways, but different in others.

3D never really took off in the living room, but now it's huge in movie theaters. My view on that is the living room TV is too casual/communal of a place for people to all sit around with 3D glasses on... it's just not what people do in their living rooms. You have people over, you host a barbecue, you want to watch the big game, you're not going to be handing out specialized glasses for your guests. You're not going to wear 3D glasses to casually watch TV while doing your homework or surfing the Web on your tablet. It just doesn't fit with what people do.

However, at the movie theater you're not visiting with friends, cooking, surfing the Web, etc. You're just sitting and watching the movie. And you're doing so on a giant screen with a kickass sound system. And you're in the dark... and you don't have to worry about bringing your own special glasses. And frankly, the technology has improved so much that big-screen 3D movies look really damn good. So here, 3D tech has thrived..

VR is going to be similar. It's not going to thrive in the communal space of the home living room.

Where VR is going to thrive though is in people's game rooms/man caves/bedrooms, and it's going to be especially popular among PC gamers. VR headsets are going to become big parts of "gaming rig" setups, just like high-end video cards or multiple-monitor displays. Think about it... there's already a sizable segment of gamers who'll buy one or two extra monitors to augment their gaming experiences. Give it one or two more years, and no monitor setup will be able to compare with the immersion of VR headsets -- especially once more games are designed with VR in mind.

I'm not sold on console VR headsets having the same impact, because most consoles are found in the communal living room -- and see above for why that's problematic. But in corners of the house where people can don their VR headsets and disappear into virtual worlds? Yeah, this is going to be big.

A friend of mine linked me this article that, I think, really captures what I would want out of a VR RPG experience:

http://www.forbes.com/sites/jasonevangelho/2016/03/18/vanishing-realms-for-htc-vive-is-dd-meets-zelda-crafted-by-a-valve-veteran/amp/

The rig for something like this is going to be obscene at first. But if the technology doesn't suck and the software is developed well, I think it's a logical next step in gaming experiences especially when we're at a point where graphics just can't get a lot better than they are right now.

Thayos summed up my feelings on VR pretty well. I don't see VR becoming a living room staple. At least not in the near future. Think it'll be big among PC gamers and people with dedicated game rooms and setups, but not so much among the people who just want to sit back and veg out in front of the TV.

Also, one can't underestimate the mutual benefits of VR and online pornagraphy.

And no, I'm not joking. VR **** is the next big adult niche.

Lol, the Zam censor makes my concluding statement look incredibly vulgar.

Pretty sure the main purpose for the Japanese VR market is ****. Not even stereotyping, when I went to Comiket I seen signups for "beta testing" early 2017 for a few VR products lol.

I just can't bring myself to see VR being a thing until we get to the stage of fantasy literature you see with the tech in stuff like .hack, SAO, or hell, even the Matrix. Simply turning your head is about as gimmicky as waggling a wii-mote. Needing one of those, I dunno what they even call them, to run in place is also something that's going to make it prohibited for living spaces. We're also pretty much going to be stuck with controllers/keyboards unless you start including gloves with sensor points, too.

Essentially, the stuff has to hit the point where it can read our brainwaves for (re)actions and possibly even override motor output so telling ourselves to run happens without our RL legs moving. The latter prospect is something people may find scary, further so if to get it all to work requires some form of implant/surgery. The brain reading, however, does have other practical applications like amputees controlling artificial limbs. So, I wouldn't rely solely on gaming for pushing that aspect even though I'm sure it'll be a good contributor.

So SAO basically.

I'm down as long as the first major MMO isn't coded by one megalomaniac.

I think you're probably right, but I also think if this is done well it's only the beginning. Successful technology has a way of rapidly improving when people like it and buy it. The initial offerings are likely to be somewhat rudimentary, but how groundbreaking was Super Mario Bros really?

Call it splitting hairs, but I guess I perceive VR as more than a couple little TVs buckled to our head. I think the earlier comparison to 3D movies is rather accurate. Maybe cool at first, but then just kinda whatever. I actually think the holographic projection stuff like Hatsune Miku is cooler and arguably a step up from that with respect to movies, but I'm also not calling 'em Star Trek holodecks.
