While this is FFXIV-related, I thought as this was something missing and absolutely wanted since FFXI's launch, I thought I'd post the link to the image a user posted in the Lodestone forums here for anyone who might have missed it!

Discuss.

I personally like the fact that they're not frail little kitty boys.

Mithra were far better designed

I agree...

I wonder why they decided to ditch the more feline features and just went with the neko-cosplayer look xD

So is this anything but the latest ploy to get people looking at XIV?

Because it looks like it's having the opposite effect so far...

I'd rather have XIV be XI-2: HD Remix! It actually baffles me that I'm a huge FF fan and have absolutely 0 interest in XIV, even though XI still features largely in my life after I've stopped playing.

I'm still puzzled as to why they just went with renamed XI races anyway. That's some seriously lazy development, and is one of the main reasons I've been turned off of XIV from the beginning.

Renamed and, on the whole, largely inferior in design. The mithra substitute did take a turn for the more boring, and don't get me started on the creeping horror that are those taru evolutions. Man, even if that game wasn't a quagmire of bad reviews, I think I'd have trouble playing just because I'm sure like 90% of the JPs play Lalafell like they did Tarus in FFXI and I'd lose my lunch if those things started congregating around me too long.

Yay for catboys! While I prefer Mithran character design as it's more cat-like overall, rather that just cat ears and tail, I do rather like the new male Mi'qote. I'm all for diversity, but I'm much more disappointed that they designed a female "Galka" (Roegadyn) which conceptually looks rather more slender and attractive than their heavy male counterparts.

There seems to be an unwritten rule in video games. Women player-characters have to be petite and attractive with a waistline to make a supermodel blush. Male PC's don't seem to have that rule and can look however they want. The only exception I've seen to this rule are Tarutaru's (Lalafell in FFXIV) and that's simply because they share the same body type as the men.

In a male dominated industry though, attractive females sell games.

Still, we've at least got a little something out of this. I'm not about to 'roll' a new male character for FFXIV (I still prefer my adorable little pig-tailed Lalafell) but at least the world will be a bit more diverse :)

I'd prefer a design that was a bit more male lion'ish and bit less gay chippendale dancer'ish.

Not that there's anything wrong with that Smiley: wink.

I'll agree with you on for Fu Manchu's, but how can anyone find those cute little Lalafell an abboration? Especially once you've heard their cute little laugh emotes :)

I get it - like the difference between male midlander hyur and male highlander hyur

maybe suggest something similar for male miquote (sun/moon)

sun could easily be more lionish (mane like the corona of the sun) while moon could be fey... let's just call it fey or fae

This, I love the races in FFXI. They have an awesome character and all look and move amazingly well, they tried to copy the races to make a changeover easier for the XI playerbase but it failed. What they ended up doing was taking something amazingly well done and tried to HQ it, in the process of which made them all generic and crappy looking. My first impression of FFXIV when I logged in was sadness at what they did with the races (nothing of the good of XI and just copies of what you can get in any korean MMO).

What they are trying to do with these new sexes of the XI races is again trying to push the XI playerbase over. Sadly for them it's not that easy and in all honestly these are all rather pitiful attempts to get intrest in the game (lol at the bare chests in a promo shot, they should put a twilight tatoo on them and be done with it). Make the game good instead of this kind of nonsense, they are even loweing the graphic engine for V2 so...why did they bother making this new game again?

The graphics engine was not optimized, and in terms of artistic direction, XIV was overly ambitious, IMO. If the goal was to appeal to a wider range of users, then yeah you're gonna need something that can run on a toaster and not require state of the art gaming PCs (which is what some felt they had to get to even play XIV).

I guess by generic you mean that the races were redesigned to look more "human", hence why Lalafell, Mi'qote and Roegadyn look like they do. Even proportions-wise they're not as far apart as their FFXI counterparts are. There are some benefits when it comes to making animations if you have standardized models...kinda. Granted, I look at is as someone who putzes around with models on their own, not someone who has a team of animators working with them. >.>;

Dude, that'd look more like a Chippendale's dancer. Burly men with long hair is the archetypical look
Like Patrick Swayze's classic Chippendales skit hahah.

They're still aiming for the Chinese market, which has a much larger percentage of female players than US or Japan. That means having yaoi fodder.

Yeah, I prefer Elvaan, Tarutaru, and Mithra to what they have now. I really don't like the Elvaan's faces.

I figure part of it is because XI has an illustrative quality to it. It's the textures that dress up the game.
XIV runs more on polygons to bring it out.
Honestly XI is still a better looking game for that.
Yoshida's my favorite S-E artist too. Damn shame.

Honestly I think that's what FFXIV main idea always was, an MMO to try include the very profitable chinese market.

Just adding long hair ala Fabio is not what I had in mind. I'm thinking bigger, more muscular, a mane that includes shoulders, heavy body hair (fur) in the chest, choices with facial hair to match. Really, it's the shaved chest that is the most chippendale'ish on that model.

That, however, would not bring out the same number of JP cosplay fanboys as their current design.

While a more muscled version would indeed be nice, I'm wary because very few MMOs have decent looking male models. They're usually weirdly proportioned or have absolutely no definition.

Everyone knows how butt *** ugly the models are in WoW for male humans. LotRO's are OK but are pretty bland in definition. Age of Conan has the heterosexual male market down decently, but all the males look like they were slammed in the face with a shovel and starved for years on end (as they're slaves it makes sense but...). SWTOR, as much as I love the game, have some fairly decent models with good definition...aside from the fact that all males are eunuchs with cabooses that could decapitate someone.

I like the look of their rendition, but I also think that the leaner human model (can't remember the name) in FFXIV is equally delicious. Fairly good looks, great definitions, and hittable for pixels. I just wish a had a bit more options in the hair and eye color departments.

Then again, I'm a shirt lifter so I'm more than likely biased : p

The Chinese market makes a bit more sense now that I think about it if they were truly trying to tap that sector. The fact that, comparatively speaking, the males in FFXIV always seemed more detailed and fleshed out in raw looks in their underwear compared to the females makes a bit more sense. Don't get me wrong, the females are very well done, but look plain in comparison to the males. From a Japanese game, that always struck me as incredibly odd.
