UltimatePay is the game card company. They sell Playspan cards, but they also work with Paypal, so I'm able to add Crysta straight out of my checking account.

After hearing all the horror stores about C&B in the weeks before we were forced to convert over (I waited until only a week was left), I made sure to absolutely avoid any option to use them. I don't remember exactly what I did, but I set up my account to bill from crysta, and UP was one of the options to buy crysta. I've only had to use them once since then because I'm paying for two months at a time.

I was expecting to have to buy some bogus play card points that I would then have to convert to crysta, but if that is happening behind the scenes, it's completely hidden from my view.

(Who says FFXI still isn't hardcore? It's so hardcore you need a guide just to give them your money!)

EDIT:

Start from this page:
Quote:
Payments and Service Fees
Amount to be Added

Here you can add Square Enix Crysta to your account.
Please select the amount of Crysta you would like to add.
*Please note that FINAL FANTASY XIV is not charging monthly subscription fees at this time.

Crysta (Cost)
* 500 Crysta (USD 5.00)
o 1,000 Crysta (USD 10.00)
o 2,000 Crysta (USD 20.00)
o 3,000 Crysta (USD 30.00)
o 5,000 Crysta (USD 50.00)
o 10,000 Crysta (USD 100.00)

Back | Next

Select the amount of crysta and click Next:

Payment Method Selection

Please select the payment method.

Payment Method
* Credit Card/Debit Card via ClickandBuy account (CLICK AND BUY PICTURE)
o UltimatePay (ULTIMATE PAY PICTURE)

Depending on the payment method and amount of Crysta to be added, a surcharge may be incurred for users who have selected UltimatePay (PlaySpan).

Back | Next

Select UltimatePay (note that the default is C&B!) and click Next, then the screen gets overlaid with the UP window which has tabs for "Visa/MC/Amex/Disc | PayPal | 1 more choices". Click on the shiny credit card icons tab if it isn't already selected, and enter your credit card info.

Note that if you cancel with the [X] button in UP's window, SE's site can't tell that you did so and the next page looks like you paid, but the fine print says they can't tell and really don't know if the payment went through yet.

yeah.. they've kinda changed up the flow a bit, bit it's still basically the same thing as before, just added the option to enter/save your CC info for purchasing Crysta directly. Just hit the site, and here's what I saw:

Crysta Passbook on my account shows my balance across the top when I first log in. Clicked the big "Add Square Enix Crysta" button in the upper left corner, picked my amount, hit next, clicked to put a dot by the "Ultimate Pay" option (is on C&B by default), and got the pop up window with 3 tabs--one for entering (and saving) CC info (V/MC, AMEX, Discover accepted), Paypal, and "1 more choices!" (which is to redeem a UGC code). That UGC panel even has a link that sends you to a page to try to locate a seller in your Zipcode--but it fails for me. Got a Walgreens and CVS across the street that sell them, but neither came up on their map--lol.

So...yeah...it's a bit of a nuissance to have to manually add Crysta now and then (especially with the $100 limit crap--bet that kinda sucks if you have multiple accounts and such).
