April Subscription Fees Waived Due to Server Downtime

Due to the temporary suspension of the FINAL FANTASY XI game service, customers with active, paying subscriptions as of March 2011 will not be charged monthly FINAL FANTASY XI subscription fees ($12.95 + $1.00 per additional Content ID) for the April billing cycle. Below is a list of important notices for affected customers.

[Important Notes]
* Only customers who paid subscription fees for March 2011 are eligible. Customers registering new accounts or reactivating accounts in April are not eligible.
* Fees for any additional Content IDs purchased from April 1, 2011 onwards will not be waived.
* Any charges aside from monthly subscription and additional Content ID fees (e.g., expansion purchases, etc.) will not be waived.
* Customers who closed their accounts during March will be eligible. However, you must reactivate your account before the end of April; since subscription fees are only being waived for the month of April, we recommend you reactivate early in order to reap the full benefits of this offer.

Details on the fees for the next billing cycle, April 2011.

Actually it was discussed here right away, just not in a thread with an obvious title about it.

If you notice, SE actually only put up that specific article about the subscription fees being waived on Friday, and we posted a news article about it on our main page yesterday about this time, so while the actual news about the fees being waived is far from new, the particular article Omegatyrant posted is.

Hmm, would resubbing now still be considered March billing? Always been fuzzy on if they'd consider that the beginning of the month or the end of it.

Don't quote me on this, but I believe if you reactivate now, come when SE would bill you in April, they'll bill you for the reactivation of your account, but since you're still counted as a paying subscriber for the April subscription fee waiver, you won't be billed for April. Basically rather than being double billed for the time you played in March and for the month of April as per how it would be normally, you'll just be billed for March.

They seem to not care about charging you a full price if you re-sub with only 1 day left, so I can't see them altering their 7 year payment process to change that. Of course who knows it is SE.

Yeah, I just kicked that symbolic amount over to Doctors Without Borders, and I'll probably send them another 20 bucks next paycheck.

Mm, see this went through my mind too. I'm going to resub later today while crossing my fingers. I know waiting a few days is probably the smarter idea, but I do miss FFXI right now (even if I might have to start over)! I'll reply on April 1st I guess to say whether this was right or not! Let's hope it is.

Hmm... I have a pending charge from Square Enix CA for $12.95. Peculiar because I have 3 mules, so the charge would be $15.95. Doubly peculiar because it's still in pending, has not gone through.

Wonder what's up with that.

No pending charges on my account for either mine or my BFs accounts, so I guess we are good.

I just got kicked off of FFXI and while trying to log back in I get this:

Quote:
Your account has been closed due to unpaid fees resulting from declined authorization on your credit card. You can reactivate your account by paying these fees with a valid card.
Pay fees now?
(LM-21)

I am kinda shocked, since any fees were supposed to be waived this month, and of course when I go to "proceed" I can't because the registration servers are down, also any call centers are not working atm since it's 1:30 in the morning.

Is anyone else by chance getting this?
This is highly pissing me off since I've been using the same card for over 5 years and never skipped a payment, at all.

Also was just about to start a fu**ing party on my NIN. Perfect fu**ing timing of course.

Okay, so I was totally billed for April.

Was the free month SE's idea of an April Fool's joke?

EDIT: To clarify, it's just a few bucks, so it's not a huge deal; I'm just a bit annoyed at the "Hey, free month!" followed by the "lol jk"

I think the deal is more along the lines of, make a mistake and bill half the playerbase and hope most don't catch it or complain. Nice way to get some good PR (not charging cause they offered no service) while still actually getting some money out of it's players.

Square are masters at abusing their payment system, they overcharge quite frequently and it's only fixed if you complain. If you don't notice or complain they get free money, hell they will even ban you if you get unjust charges reversed via your bank.

Something is funky for sure, I got billed from them, but not for the normal fees (2 accounts, one has one mule so $26ish) but instead for $5 and some random change. Very strange.

There are also two $1 debits showing for where I updated my CC expiration date, I know those won't go through and I did that well after the $5 showed up.

Well that's a tad sinister don't you think? I think I'll call Hanlon's razor into play here and say: "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."

They made a mistake. One of many over the years, though people may be more forgiving considering the circumstances surrounding this latest one, but a mistake nonetheless.
