Hiromichi Tanaka: "we're not sure" on FFXI future...Follow

Why is this thread still going?

Hiromichi Tanaka is the producer, I don't doubt he knows very well what the future of FFXI is, and he went out of his way to clarify after the E3 Press conference that he did not mean to say there was only one year of content left for FFXI only that they have 1 year of content already planned.

and if you automatically believe what they say as the truth then you are fool and don't understand anything.

them saying, we will continue to do updates means nothing.

Just like your S-E conspiracy theories really mean nothing. Either they will continue to support it or not. Only time will tell.

what SE conspiracy theories?

fact is, they will never say, we are not going to do anymore content, even if they know that to be true, they would lose millions of dollars, that is just common sense.

Anyone with a brain can easily deduct a reasonable answer. Why would Tanaka be pushing ffxi players to play ffxiv all the while not updating ffxi. This would easily ostracize the players, and it would probably have a reverse effect.

It's a much smarter business move to go after the an audience that isn't already giving you tons of money. ffxi players will be giving SE money, by either playing ffxi or ffxiv or both. The reasonable business move is to get new players.

This is why it's stupid if SE killed ffxi.... but I wouldn't put it past them :D

Yes but as a gaming company it gets harder and harder to keep good talent working on dated gaming technology. Your best guys are going to want to work on the new shiny game, not the 7 year old dinosaur.

So we'll get less skilled workers on FFXI. In fact I imagine we already have been getting second tier people and you can see the result. Content that is getting increasingly sparse and uninspired. How many players are going to keep with it if the quality keeps deteriorating.

So it's not necessarily a stupid move to try to transition gamers to FFXIV. It lessens the strain on your programmers to have one game to work on. It keeps everyone at the company engaged with a state of the are graphic engine. And you hopefully keep the FFXI players and gain some new in the meantime. If it works out, its win-win.

Most other MMO companies solve this problem by updating the game's technology. UO, EQ, EVE, DOAC and WoW have all done this.

It has nothing to do with my way because it is a fact that SEs king system is the reason this game has so many botters who cheat and use their cheats to amass huge amounts of gil. You cant bot instanced events or ZNMs and these events require you to put in far more work than waiting for something to spawn.... so tell me why didn't SE change it? Who were they catering for when they decided to leave the worst system of distributing loot in the game? They simply did not care and shifted our attention elsewhere.

Off Topic:

The biggest fuel of cheating in the game has nothing to do with how the kings are setup. You can do reasonably well in this game without any king gear, but why are people insisting the "best or nothing"? Some of the best gear in this game indeed has to be designed to be rare. Making the best to be common defeats the whole purpose of being the best. But somehow the word "rare" being translated into "if you do not have it, you suck." Why cannot people acknowledge the meaning of the word "rare"? It is their choice to "Q_Q" about not having the best gear; they have just as much choice to not to "Q_Q".

Why are people buying so much gil are for the same reason why kings got botted so much. Fixing the kings will not change a thing in this game if the player mentality does not change. I have personally decide for myself it worth more of my money to walk away from those groups that cheats.

I think you answered your own question. Too much of the playerbase is operating with a high school/college fraternity mentality when it comes to social interaction. There's an American expression that captures it perfectly: "Keeping up with the Joneses". On one side you have insecure players putting down other players because they don't have XYZ piece of equipment. All in the name of trying to act like they're better than everyone else. On the other side, you have insecure players who just have to have that XYZ piece of equipment so their linkshell officers will accept them into their clique. All in the name of wanting to fit in.

The result? Rampant cheating, office politics, and skullduggery that would make the cattiest of sorority sisters hang their heads in shame. This "all or nothing" mindset can bring out the absolute worst in people. I can tell you that from experience and it hasn't been that long since I could get it into my head to just not give a damn about the perceptions of others and that the stress incurred just isn't worth it.

If the main gameplay activity on XIV is Guildeves and SE says it is, then that combined with the complete lack of grouping will make the gameplay on XIV inferior to XI imo.

And anyone who thinks people will party on XIV is fooling themselves. If people don't need to group, they won't. XIV will be a solo MMO where people only play together in endgame just like WoW.

All I have to say is that if it really is the "death" of FFXI then we'd better get to playing and enjoying it while it's still around.

So, log back into FFXI and start working on that eighteenth level 75 job, that seemingly unobtainable mythic weapon and keep annoying your linkshell mates with ASCII pictures of buttocks!

Viva La FFXI!!!

Speak for yourself. There's plenty of non-hardcore people that are still getting around to completing storyline and such. Not everyone plays MMO's as if they are some race to the finish.

Well SE seems to have solved the problem by recreating the experience with a different Roman Numeral attached. I don't think SE was willing to abandon the PS2 players so they just created an updated game which didn't include PS2 limitations.

You can get through the entire storyline in a month if you played a few hours a day everyday. The rest of your time spent is grinding to get to the level to be able to complete such things. As well, you said "storyline" which fits under what I meant for "atmosphere". An MMO may not be a "race" but please explain how going slower is more enjoyable? I read the cutscenes, I paid attention, I don't understand how I could get more enjoyment out of putting in a month delay between doing the missions instead of doing them all in a row. In fact, I think it's better to do them all at once so everything is still fresh in your head.

My best experience in this game was doing CoP. I went from Riverne A to completion in two weeks with a static. We had to schedule around full time jobs and commitments but we still completed the entire thing in two weeks of a few evenings a week. That's one of four expansions down in a week. RotZ is much shorter, I did ToAU as it came out, but each update only lasted me a day or two (depending on if there was a JP midnight wait in between quests).

And about grouping and FFXI/FFXIV, forced grouping is a blessing and a curse. You get people that are more patient (i.e. can deal with BS a whole lot better) through forced grouping, but you also get less people as well as make it harder to play catch up if you're a new player. Everyone here seems to be thinking that forced grouping makes this game awesome, but please explain why I always read posts from people completely unable to advance in this game because they cannot find a group to do mission X or BC Y? If forced grouping was truly such a wonderful thing, why do so many people avoid repeating missions with others?

Forced grouping only really works when everyone involved stands to benefit from it. SE's finally wised up on that a little with the Add-Ons and how they'll give various keys to trade in for random **** on top of some EXP, but before that there were years of EXP loss in BCs, and by proxy, gil in food, meds, tools, and time. So really, it's just an indirect way of saying people are looking out for themselves. Which is understandable not wanting to log in and feeling like you've lost progress by the time you log off.

In that respect, I can't really say any one MMO's community has been better than other. Though, I am inclined to believe games that focus on PvP invite more aggressive behavior outside of the game mechanics themselves, either through people being sore losers or just plan waving the e-peen. I'll also say FFXI has plenty of PvP, but I don't mean Balista or Brenner.

FFXI would probably have 20% of its users if it didn't have the coating of a FF title on it. In fact it would probably have closed servers already if it had some obscure name as "Battle for Vana'diel" and skipped the classic jobs from FF titles as well.

Of course even WoW is living on the fact that it is a Blizzard product, and that they always have made quality games. Even if their MMO would be bad, they'd have people sticking with it as a huge solo game on servers.

"A few hours everyday" is hardcore/"race to the finish." You may not believe this, but some people (including those of us who have kids) play a few hours a week at most.

It's amazing how the time goes by. Many people who were in high school when FFXI came out have finished college and started families since then.

Minus the PvP which is the main pull of WoW.

I don't think XIV will be that successful, but it may successfully kill XI.

This was posted in the FFXIV (it pertains mostly to it) but it spent the whole second half of the video clarifying plans between FFXI and FFXIV. Its very likely like many have said they don't know the 'direction' they want to take FFXI to (Both style of content with expansions, or what they can do to exemplify the differences between the two games), but its also very clear they want both games to be distinct and still flourish next to each other. AND that content for FFXI will still be developed as long people are still playing (like they have always said). FFXIV is not the end of FFXI, the game will stay around and have content updated as long as people show interest in FFXI.

So for people thinking what Tanaka said meant the 'end' of FFXI in the near future... let me just say you all are nuts. FFXI is still the most profitable game SE has ever made and they wouldn't just 'shut it down' just because another game like it was coming, nor completely cut off content flow.

The one positive out of that interview is that they did admit some people will decide to stick with XI. So hopefully they will keep that in mind and not pull the plug on it. I still can't say I trust them though.

I honestly think at this point it's going to be harder to get people staying on FFXIV for a long period of time. We'll all try it out, some will stay, but I think alot of us will come back to XI, that's if we even leave in the first place.

Many of us have put in ridiculous amounts of time in FFXI, and still have tons of things to accomplish. If you've been playing FFXI for 5+ years, the nostalgia always brings you back, it's not necessarily a good thing, but it's what happens. It's also what makes new games seem meh, even though it's usually not the case.

Unicorn at peak times still hits upwards of 3500 people, meaning server population is much larger than that. All servers probably reach 2000-3000 people at peak times. They can't even combine servers yet cause it would be far too many people, hell there's two servers now that you can't even go to cause they're overpopulated.

There might be a 2010 release date estimated for XIV, but it's probably late '10, and knowing SE and they're delays we're probably looking more towards 2011. This is all assuming testing and betas go well. I'm just going to keep playing FFXI until XIV is officially out and I've decided, XIV is great and I'm sticking to it!
