Yeah, it's all those comments about focusing on getting FFXI players to convert to XIV that worry me faaaaaaaar more than the ambiguous response about future XI content.

Considering that ACP and MKD were supposed to be weeks worth of content, most players will finish "a year's worth of content" much quicker.

That aside, I want to comment on the part of the interview that said 14 is primarily targeted to 11 players. It feels like a sick joke that they somehow plan on making money by marketing to people they're simultaneously irritating. I know they said they'll also try to get new subscribers, but considering how many MMOs will be out for sale by 14's launch, why do they think anyone will choose theirs?

SE isn't going to shut down FFXI's servers when there are still lots of people playing it. Even if they stop making new content for it, there will still be quite sometime before the servers are shutdown.

I know I personally still have a lot of things that are already in game that I still want to do, even if they never released anymore content.

You guys all make it sound like they're yanking the rug out from under us. They aren't. When FFXI comes to an end, it'll be a slow quiet death in which most of the player base will have moved on naturally.

I expect that I will stop playing on my own before the servers are shut down, and I don't plan on leaving anytime soon. If the time to quit for you is now, by all means quit. But just because you don't want to play FFXI anymore, doesn't mean there aren't a lot of other people who still do.

No, they won't shut down all the servers for a few more years at least, but things will still turn for the worse in the upcoming year. Regardless of new content and update, when 14 goes online, a significant portion of 11's population will be taken away for good, and we'll either have under-populated servers where finding people for an event will be much more difficult OR, more likely, they'll merge servers to trim costs and maintain healthy populations while disrupting economies and endgame LS competition. Maybe that would be okay if it was done just once, but I could see SE merging servers at least twice a year, for the next 2-3 years depending on the rate of migration to 14.

FFXIV has a totally different system from FFXI (Armory, not EXP). Based on the similarity of graphics but different systems, it looks like SE wants to have their cake and eat it too: some people exclusive to each game, but some who go back and forth between both.

You really didn't read the interview, did you?

Quote:

ZAM: One of the first things that we noticed about FFXIV was how similar it looked to FFXI in graphics, game play style - really in every sense of the word. Why is that, and is that a concern that you might be dragging over FFXI players by primarily targeting that already established consumer audience?

Tanaka: (Laughs) I think it's simply because the same people are making the game.

ZAM: Well, we can agree companies make games that are different from one another. I was just curious as to why FFXIV is so very, very similar. Most companies, when they make additional MMOs, they try to change their focus so that they don't take their existing consumer base away from a game that's already established. I guess the question is, aside from the obvious "the same talent behind the game," aspect, why was the decision made to make FFXIV so similar to FFXI?

Tanaka: FFXI has been out for about eight years now; the graphical engine we used is very old. In that sense, we wanted to have something that the FFXI players can smoothly move on to. So yes, in that sense, it could be very similar to Final Fantasy XI, so it's easier to switch for them. Also, for the race, that's something that we did on purpose to make it very similar to FFXI so that it's easier for people to go from FFXI to come to FFXIV, so that's why I feel it's very similar. As you mentioned earlier, maybe other companies make totally different MMOs to not get users from their original MMOs, but in this, I think we have a different policy or something in that sense. We are providing FFXIV for the FFXI community - as another game they can enjoy, so that's the primary target. Also, we want Final Fantasy players to enjoy the game who haven't played MMOs before, and we also want MMO players who haven't played the Final Fantasy series. We are trying to reach several different targets, but the first one will be FFXI players.

Tanaka just said, they are trying to get XI players to change over. Yes he says he would like them to play both, but honestly, who can commit to 2 MMOs? Not I. And if you play both, that's double the money for SE so hell yeah they want you to play both.

Not only can I not commit the time, but I'm not paying 2 fees to split time in 2 games.

SE is poaching their own players, plain and simple.

Just to address some of the claims that's been made. on-line is their most profitable division. It would follow they would do everything to have 2 thriving MMOs.

They're certainly not trying to get people to quit in hopes they will sign up to XIV. That's probably one of the weirdest Zam logic I've witnessed and is probably more indicative of the poster's own intentions than any plans SE may have.

Nothing's going to be game breaking in this game anymore. They're likely giving us this good stuff so we can get around to doing all those things we never got done with much more ease and then move on to FFXIV.

I think that would be the nicest way to end things. Give us GM gear with the final mini-expansions and let the last few of us go around wreaking havoc on things to finish mission lines, kill NM's we always wanted to kill and actually take down AV or PW with a noob alliance of all SAM's. Then we can move on to FFXIV in peace having "finished the game".

Tanaka's words do worry me quite a lot. It's funny, why should a player invest effort and time for example, for their Relic Weapon now when it could very well be likely in the time frame needed to obtain it FFXI could very well become a shadow of its former self? I actually expected SE to state they will keep FFXI up for decades, that it would continue getting expansions very strongly, that FFXIV would be different enough from FFXI in style and play that FFXI could stay with no remorse and only those who wanted an all new experience would move on. But, if you read the interview none of the above apply, maybe some parts will still be like I visualized, but unless SE proves us wrong by actually announcing a large, full scale expansion before the end of 2009 we could very well start looking for a burial ground for XI, and a tombstone.

I think the only realistic way people would continue to play both would depend on how they do the billing for XIV.

I think if they do something where you only have to buy another Content ID off Playonline to make a character in XIV, then it would only be an extra $1 a month for each character. So if you only have one Playonline Content ID, it's still $12.95 a month, whether that ID holds an XI or a XIV character. If you have two IDs, but for seperate games, it's $13.95 a month, and so on.

Considering the two games share a development team, I would think this would be a reasonable system. They're putting the same amount of effort and new content, thus they get the same income. Asking players to pay twice as much in subscription fees for the same amount of content would be a bad business move.

But, yeah, if I only had to pay an extra $1 or $2 a month to be able to pop in on XI, I could see myself staying for a few years yet just because of how much stuff I still have yet to accomplish.

You, sir, are a genius, why had no one thought about this before?

The problem is, this is SE, heck no, this is a videogame companyand as such they are out to make cash, bling, bucks, moolah, gil, well, not gil, but you get my point, you can bet anything that SE will charge full monthly fee for both games, and even worse, I bet the monthly fee for FFXIV will be higher than for FFXI, after all it's a * new * MMO, $14.99 is the current standard. Not only that, knowing SE they will also charge $1.00 (make that $2.00) per mule/alt simply because they got away with it for FFXI. SE is the only company I know that does this, and we can be very sure they'll continue the traditions set by FFXI.

Too bad SE is not out to make our online lives easier (and cheaper).

Well, this news has helped me make a decision: XIV can stick it. I'm not playing another game to have it abandoned half finished. There is still plenty of room for XI to grow, but SE is just dumping it, and they will do the same to XIV a few years down the road. Plus if I wanted to play WoW, I'd just play the real thing.

I'll stick with XI as long as it is up and running, but I'm not playing any other SE MMO's.

People are grasping at straws trying to deny that currently SE does not have plans for a big ffxi expansion. FFXI went into the decline stage of its life cycle from a resource perspective as soon as developers finished ToAU. WoTG has been a string it out strategy while SE committed its real talent to developing xiv.

I do not fault them for committing major resources to xiv but they have failed to reinvest in xi to a critical degree. FFxiv may be a great product but I am going to stick with xi until it loses its entertainment value.

SE has pretty much immunized me against ffxiv with their just deplorable attitude toward customors and I know for a fact that many people share a similar attitude.

For those that are denying the reality of the recent interview, regardless of current plans, things can change. Things are very difficult economially in Japan right now. Possibly the long ruling political party may even lose power because people are so disturbed about job losses. It is hard for me to envision SE just walking away from anything profitable at this time. However, it would not be surprising if they just kept it on minimal life support.

If ffxiv bombs I think that would be very bad for ffxi. One decision could be to reinforce and revitalize ffxi but another scenario would be to pull the plug on xi and put all effort to xiv. While this may seem strange to players, from a business perspective, xi is the past and xiv is the future.

Only because EQ2 was a colossal flop, mainly due to EQ1 players not wanting to switch.

which may explain what's going on here. SE might be afraid of an EQ2 situation where people don't want to switch to the new game so they are doing their best to kill off XI to ensure XIV success.

They definitely want to make a smooth transition. Well, I have no interest in switching. Best case scenario would be for them to turn the servers and development over to a third party and let current subscribers continue there. This has been done with other MMOs. That and a monkey could have better customer service than SE and could/would fix the games flaws.

The real problem with the big switch theory which keeps getting mentioned as if XI is dead as soon as FFXIV goes beta is that the PS3 is a distant 2nd in terms of hardware sales in Japan to the Wii and even then console gaming in general is pretty dead there. The biggest game SE has this generation is Dragon Quest IX for the DS, a handheld.

Granted XIV will try to ride the wave of the certain sales spike from FFXIII, the PS2 was the unquestioned leader in the market there when XI released and it only managed to sell to a small fraction of the userbase.

Anyone expecting an immediate switch to XIV and that XI is dead in 1 year in terms of user acceptance and game size is seriously not thinking this through. For one, FFXIV likely will miss the 2010 release date advertised as XIII doesn't even have a release date yet, though it may go Beta on 2010, just as XI went in beta in 2002 and SE counts that as its 1st year. 2ndly, FFXIV, like XI will be a long term project for SE. It will probably go multiplatform with the next wave of next-gen platforms so at best, you're looking 2-3 years until this 'immediate' switch is completed (that is assuming their plan is to shut down XI and move everyone over to XIV, which is debatable).

So having no content from 2010 to 2012 for XI when this transition is taking place would be pretty dumb of them if they want to switch those PS2 holdoevers in Japan over to PS3.

I understand, and sympathize with the jitteriness of the community and the blame SE first mantra, but the claims vs. facts of the market doesn't jive. There will most certainly be more content added for XI.

The real concern for me is whether its add-on DLC or a full blown expansion.

It wouldn't be so bad if these new "mini expansions" were actually expansions. No new areas, no new jobs, no perks or interesting battlefields-- just storylines and a few pieces of gear.

Whatever happened to them releasing the northlands, the Far East, the Far West? I had my hopes up that the best was yet to come, and that these "mini expansions" were just buying time for that.

The 3 we have now were not sold /advertised as expansions or mini=-expansions, but I see your point.

The question though is delivery and content size. DLC vs. a retail/large product

For years SE stated that their next MMO would not be a Final Fantasy title, would be different than FFXI, and that it would not replace FFXI.

We now know they have been working on FFXIV since CoP was released.

Square Enix has been lying in our faces about their next MMO for years.

If they lied about it being a Final Fantasy title and lied about it being different than FFXI how can we believe them when they tell us it won't replace FFXI?

By now it should be obvious that we can't trust anything SE says. They say they will keep FFXI going but how can we believe them given their history of horrible, horrible lies?

Square Enix is very unlikely to sell it because Final Fantasy is their flagship IP. It would be like Microsoft selling Windows 2000 to a third party.

Also given SE's awful track record with badly programmed, incompletely documented and poorly archived code not many companies would want to deal with the mess that FFXI's code base undoubtedly is.

We're talking about a company that threw away all of the original art assets and source code for FF7 and FF8 to make room on their development systems. It never even occurred to them to back it up. That's why the PC versions of those two games were such a mess. The company porting it had incomplete source code (which was early beta code they found laying around on a hard drive somewhere) and only the PS1 artwork and FMVs to work with.
