No offense, but the human skeleton thing, is a big turn off... I shiver when I see people that thin.

I'm on a 3500 calorie per day diet. That's just to MAINTAIN my weight. And no, nothing is wrong with me (aside from my way-too-fast-metabolism).

Can't be. They dodged bullets. Bullets are ranged. You can't Perfect Dodge ranged attacks.

More like Invincible.

This made me laugh more than it should have. I think it's because I just watched an old youtube vid of a "news story" mtv news did in '06 about gold farmers.

It did say average, I my self wouldnt mind being bigger in size. Means when i finally start gym in the next two months I can put it as something else.

Im not depressed, bit fed up cos i keep sleeping around trying to find miss perfect. Aint gonna happen Ha!
But yeah I too am sick of studies like that, its the same in this country saying most of our kids are obese, but they are not. Its just we live in a society which accepts different shapes and colours. So nothing bothers people.
Which is a good thing.

But then I personally think they should remove any OP to help remove peoples weight when they should get out and excercise if they want and stop all the obese moanings on the news.

Im a Medium Small size body 5 ft 7 so im a short ****** :)
But then I know style, fashion and no not gay lol

I've put on nearly 2 stone in weight since I started FFXI (nearly 30 pounds to American readers).

It's got nothing to do with not being able to go to the gym 4 times a week any more after damaging my back. Nothing at all...and I'm betting none of the fatties they interviewed had a "WiiFit"....

These sorts of surveys are a joke.

It's like when I see the adverts on TV in the UK for things like shampoo and they flash impressive figures across the screen that say things like "68 percent of people agreed that this product gave them super shiney hair!" and then you see at the bottom of the screen (in print so small you need to sit within 1 foot of the screen to read it) "A survey of 50 people was carried out and 34 people agreed"....it's like a red rag to a bull for me. Only 50 people in the UK wash their hair....damn?!

If you're going to start boasting about how wonderful people find your product at least make the sample size worthwhile.

Contrary to popular belief, fat doesn't turn to muscle when you work out.

Besides this being a weak study, wasn't there another one posted here before saying that MMO players in particular usually weight less than non MMO playing people?

Correct, but the reverse IS true.

Plus, people who work out, tend to want to eat more to keep their muscles fed.

It's not easy to gain muscle and trim down at the same time.

I've seen this somewhere before..... But yeah, it's really easy to lose fat and build muscle at the same time. It involves a lot of iron/steel/rocks, supplements, and steroids.

For someone who hasn't worked out much and starts a good workout/cardio regiment, they will shed a few pounds and gain inherent muscle at first pretty easily. After that comes the hard part.

This is just another person who has an anti game ideal, doesn't understand, too old, did you see the picture of the author? I guarantee she is +35, depressed, and overweight.

What there needs to be is more articles and documentaries like Second Skin. It's a documentary about the lives of casual, and non casual gamers with real life examples. The best part is that it has no overlaying tones of approval or disapproval. Just informative and relative. They used to have the documentary to watch for free on warcry but now I think you have to wait for it to come out. I'd recommend it to anyone here.

I know it doesnt I was just saying that instead of making an essay about it, if i lift weights all day it would build me up, but i want the extra few pounds just on me instead of being thin toned with a few muscles, i want to be big with a few muscles.

Simple now? :)

Forgot im chatting on a forum and people read too much in to it ;)

WTB some of your metabolism...

I can fast for 3 days+ and barely lose a couple pounds, my metabolism is -that- slow. Not to mention I would end up feeling like a ravenous animal.

The problem with the article is it implies cause and effect, i.e. being a gamer made you fat and introverted.

More likely you were already somewhat introverted when you became a gamer. And more likely you were not in the greatest of shape because if you were athletic and drawn to sports, you'd be doing that instead of gaming.

The simplest explanation is that different types of people like different types of hobbies. And stereotypes are there because there is always a grain of truth to them. A large number of hardcore gamers are intelligent, awkward and introverted. Big deal. It's who they are. They weren't made that way by videogames. Videogaming is a great hobby for those that are bright, and aren't athletically gifted, as it offers challenges to the mind and hand eye coordination.

You just need to remembert to get out and exercise some.

I find it funny that no mention is made of the IQ's of gamers versus non-gamers. I wonder how that would have turned out?

I'm pretty sure the point of these surveys are to make gamers look bad, not better than other people.

The world would explode.

Fasting is an extremely poor way to lose weight. Your body thinks it's starving and goes into starvation mode where it hangs onto every little calorie it has. Then you tend to over eat to try and compensate for the hunger you feel when you finally come off of fasting, thus packing on even more weight than you may have potentially lost.

If you want to lose weight and kick start your metabolism, you need to eat 5 to 6 small (HEALTHY) meals throughout the day. That and doing cardio will help you burn the weight off and keep you from over-eating to put it back on.

The problem with these surveys is it smacks of:

Chickens have feathers.
This animal has feathers.
Therefore, it is a chicken.

This is a Fallacy. Just like:

These gamers are fat, depressed and virgins
Therefore, all gamers are fat, depressed and virgins.

I personally have noticed that people with serious/chronic health problems (like myself) often are gamers. Health issues period often make you depressed plus if an illness makes you not be able to be active ( like I'm athsmatic badly) you might gain some weight. I'm always going up and down but I'm not obese. When you can't be active you generally find hobbies that you can do sitting and often you find video games are a common sit down hobby.

Basically my two cents is video games often are played by people who might be "depressed" or "fat" already not because of them.

Anyway I'm not fat and depressed though I have some moments. I play the game to escape and unwind from my health, working 2 jobs, caregiving to my elderly parents and the rat race that is my life but I don't consider that it gets to me sometimes being "emo" or "depressed".

Did they survey non-gamers? Cause seriously, the average American is probably 35, overweight, and depressed.

Thank god I'm an anomaly then. I play more than one Online game (a few hours each depending on my mood). I'm Female, and not someone who waddles to the Twinkies. &, I'm not depressed.

In fact gaming keeps me from being a total jerk to everyone. Why don't they do something useful.. Like do a study on how many uptight jerks don't play games at all?

Sorry to say it, but me and my husband are both Asthmatics but we don't let ourselves be lazy just because of it. We have different types. But both of us work long hours at work, and tend to use games to unwind. If it wasn't 2am when my husband gets home, I'm sure he wouldn't mind riding his bike (which he rides to/from work on anyway). In my case I will only need an inhaler if I'm trying to make for the 100 meter dash. Being that only major exertions such as distance running are a bane to breathing like a normal human being, I still make it a point to exercise daily. Being careful not to over-do it.

It's mostly people that let their daily problems get them down, that suffer depression and often weight gain. And while any study is likely to show that gamers are overweight and depressed.. ask yourself this. "how many people alive today are not gamers, and how old are they?" you will likely find that most people born in 1970+ tend to be gamers (cause games became something you could play at home in the early 80s).
