When I was a kid, the first game I played that you could really put into the RPG genre was an action hack n slash type RPG game called "Gauntlet"(1985), it was an arcade game but I had it on my trusty old Amstrad CPC 464, and for those who don't know what the hell that is, it's a really old home computer that you would load games via audio cassette (there was a floppy disk version but we never had it), and it would take an eternity to load, no really look lol:

That brings back some memories I tell ya lol, well anyways that was my first RPG style game that I ever played, it was a great game for it's time actually, I found a youtube disk version of it (that accounts for the much faster loading) here check it out it's so lame now, but I loved this at the time:

You would collect keys to open doors to gain access to other areas, collect heal potions to restore health, if you were a wizard you would collect mana potions restore your mana power to cast spells, and this was probably the first game that I can remember playing of RPG style.
The first real RPG game I got into that you could really call an RPG would be "The Immortal"(1991) on Sega Megadrive (that's Sega Genesis for USA) , check it out:

I actually never played FF games until FF7 on the PS1, it's the first and in my opinion best one out of the ones I've played since in my opinion, probably because it was my first, you never forget your first love.
What was the first RPG you played, and the first you played that got you hooked into the genre, and why?

It's that and the first Dragon Warrior. Zelda is action-adventure so I'm not counting that. Didn't beat the original Final Fantasy until almost 20 years after its release, and I'm not sure about the original Dragon Warrior but that game is quite a beast.
