Using PS2 Conrtoller On PC Version of the Game?Follow

#1 Jun 28 2006 at 11:40 PM Rating: Good
I don't get it. I have a PS2, and I have a FFXI Online for PC. How do I use my PS2 controller on my PC? It says it would be useful in the Newbiw Guide.

-Thanks

(Used to play WoW, so thats why my name is like that)

Ignore the idiot above. You can buy an adapter, usually at Radio Shack, for about $10. The PS2 controller plugs into it and has a USB connector. It has a VERY easy interface to calibrate and works perfectly. You can map every button on the controller too.

Ok, thank you for the help. I will ignore him. I think he was trying to say Keyboard Only though. But he spelt only wrong, and then again, you can use more than just a keyboard. So whatever. Thanks for the help.

New here...how do i rate ppl? I hit rate posts, and then it like refreshed this page or something.

Yes use the adapter, or get a control pad with a lot of buttons. I recommend the Nyko Airflo because it keeps my hands cool ^^

The FFXI Config tool has a preset in it for setting up your controller that will make it almost exactly like the ps2 version. I recommend using that. It's very intuitive, you can pick it up right away.

To that guy that said keyboard only: I used the keyboard for the first year I played, but once I switched to controller, i've never looked back. So much more enjoyable when you can sit back and play it like a regular game.

THe onry is just a play on words since most Japanise who have english as a second langauge have a difficult time pronouncing L's and tend to come out as R's. The guys just being a total dumbass.

For rating people you need to be Scholar or above and I think it takes a few posts for it to finally kick in as well.

As a PS2 original player I find it very difficult to play with just the keyboard. Probably because I've used a controller since the start.

Same here. I've only played console games, nothing on PC, so using the controller just seems natural. I tried to just use the keyboard after i got it but it just didn't feel right. For me moving around is so much easier and smoother using the dual shock too.

Also a quick fyi... I got the aforementioned PS2 USB adapter from radio shack, and I've not regretted it one bit. I did have one little bit of difficulty though that I thought I would share. Running windows XP, the system automatically detected and installed the controller as soon as I plugged it in. However, I was having a hard time getting the rumble function to work and I wanted to use it for fishing at the time (old fishing system). Everything worked except the rumble with the windows driver. I ran the floppy that came with the disk though, and that fixed it.

I know... I was dumb for not installing it in the first place, but I just thought somebody else may have the same problem.

Good luck!

Thanks for the help everyone. But I have another question. I have an xbox 360, and the controllers automatically have a USB plug, so i could just use that instead of getting the thing from radio shack for $10. So do you think it's worth buying the thing for the PS2 controller? Both controllers have the same amount of buttons.(PS2 Controllers: Cannot click thumbsticks. Xbox 360 Controllers: L and R Trigger not usable on Computer)

Thanks!

If you want to avoid the whole adapter business, but at the same time avoid relearning the controls, the Logitech Rublepad 2 is pretty much a exact clone of the PS2 controller. You can set the button mappings exactly like the PS2. Even the rumble feels exactly the same as on the PS2.

I recently installed ffxi on my macbook, and I've been using the Rumblepad for a few weeks now and I definitely recommend it. Got it for ~$30 on amazon.

I've had a PS1 dual shock controller I've used with an adapter since I've gotten this game, and I really can't play the game without it. I'm more of a console game player anyway and I just find the controlls much more intuitive with a controller. The $12 I spent on the adapter forever ago was one of the best $12 I ever spent; it's great for emulation and many other games as well.

can you reprogram a button on the ps2 controller so you can use vent while you play? it'd be annoying if i had to let go of my controller everytime i wanted to say something

Does anyone have an exact link to this adapter for the PS2? I've recently switched from PS2 to PC and I'd like to use my controller.

Could tell you from experience that my roommate uses the adapter into his PC to utilize the PS2 controller; works like a dream.

Got it for about $9 at Radio Shack, too.

Actually, no...PSX is not PS2 and that Radio Shack adapter will only mildly work out. It will not fulfill full gameplay you would have on the actual PS2 console. Something to do with "axis mapping" on the D pad controls. The *only* series of adapters that really work seamlessly come from a company in China with the trademark "SmartJoy". The EMS USB2 is also an adapter that will also work well but you need to install seperate drivers. Link below to both of these along with a comparison chart to show what each offers. Sorry, mail order only.
