Surely you know that this is no revelation ... there had to be some other purpose for this thread. Perhaps you just wanted to commiserate.

I realize that lying is a recent trend that originated with the birth of the internet. Afterall, it's not as if I ever lied to impress a woman in some bar twenty-six years ago when I told her I was "a self-made millionaire astronaut on hiatus from NASA flying supplies to South America to feed starving children while I trained to win another gold medal in the decathalon" ... thank God the internet didn't exist or she might have thought I was lying.

You go on and on about how this person lied to you about his/her (?) real identity, but you left out the most important facts. What kind of LS member was he/she? Did he/she help others? Was he/she fun to play with? What traits did he/she exhibit that induced you to befriend him/her in the first place? To be honest, if you booted him/her from the LS just because he/she lied about his/her identity, then it seems like you missed the point of FFXI.

Hi guys~ And, um, maybegirls...

I've read the OPs anger (and seen my own friends go through similar things with guys lying about being girls... to the point of showing pictures of someone else and all) and I've also read the responses (don't use the game as a dating service) but I've watched this time and again over my years playing this game...

Boys (Men, whatever) tend to treat people they THINK are girls differently, even if it's not about dating the player or anything. "Girls" get by with **** that a guy would get kicked from a party for. "Girls" get people spending hours and hours farming for them and camping NMs for them. "Girls" can hit level 75 in a job with a playing skill that would be embarrassing at level 50 but no one has the balls to say anything about it because they're 'just a girl'.

You know what, I hate to break it to you, but a lot of those 'just a girl's aren't girls at all. They're using you. OK, some of them really are girls, but they're using you too.

And you know what? A lot of the competent players you play with are 'secretly' girls, who don't want to deal with the CRAP you get if people find out you really are a girl. From "Wanna CYBER"? to the implication that you are somehow an inferior player and therefore need to be protected from any criticism which might make you a BETTER player...

My advice: don't let yourself be used by people claiming to be women. Your chances of ending up disillusioned like the OP are way way way (x about a billion) higher than your chances of getting laid.

I'm sorry that this is the only experience you've had with 'girls'. I happen to be a genuine, 100%, all natural Girl (and I check often enough to know this as fact), and I've worked hard for every level and everything I have in the game, and I've never once gone the "Hi, I'm a girl, give me stuff" route. And I never will. People who do this are weak and lazy. Not all girls are like this.

I totally feel for the OP. I mean, I had been chatting with this Galka for weeks before I found that they weren't really a Galka at all! They were a hume logging into FFXI and *pretending* to be a Galka. Can you imaging that? It's a sick (virtual) world that we live in.

Not only am I a Galka, I'm a girl too. /sigh I have broken many hearts.

If the person was a good person, helpful, outgoing, didn't manipulate people for personal gain, then there is no problem.

What it sounds like to me, is, somone got emotionally attached, possibly both people did, and came to a realization of the truth and it wasn't what they wanted. now they are on a streak of "revenge" for somthing they brought on to themselves :D

And as I heard a guy say once, when asked why he plays a female character in the game:

"If I'm going to be in parties or camping something for hours on end, I have to like what I'm looking at."

If not for identity issues and stepping outside of one's self, I can see this being a valid reason.

I'm a girl too~ And you just said exactly what I was trying to say. There are plenty of girls who work just as hard as boys for what they get. The ones who are using you... whether they're girls or maybegirls... aren't worth your time!

It is a RPG, but most people dont RP in it in a traditional way.

Its one thing to be a guy and play a girl, and NOT flirt and try to 'attract' people, its another thing to just lie and manipulate people.

I have a mule who is a mithra thf, and while leveling it I do tend to get checked more, but it usualy ends at /ma "Protect /ma "Shell" /ma "Cure" /goodbye. And this isnt exactly rare when using my regular hume male.

Certainly if its taken farther than that, such as /t I always tell them I'm a guy.

edit: And there are actually quite a few reasons why a guy would play a female, espically a mithra. For one, like someone else said yo uspend a lot of time looking at it. Second, in my case I wanted tos tart in windurst because it is the best place to level up a character, because it has pretty good drops.(honey chips silk etc) I also have almsot always made male hume's in sandoria, so I never got the lvl1 ring, so I had to choose between taru and mithra, well, I tried a taru once and hate how small they are, hate the view being so low.. Hate my char disapearing in high grass.. its egh.

I opted for a Male Hume, as I wanted my character to be versatile (and I didn't want my character to have to run around in hotpants all the time). The thought of being hit on by desperate teenagers is really not at all appealing to me, so it seemed the safest route at the time. However, I recently created a female Tarutaru. She's so small that a lot of people don't seem to notice that she's female (though I think the name is quite feminine).

Even the people that I talk to the most in-game think I'm male, and we've known each other for years now. It just has never come up, and I don't see much point in going out of my way to point out that I'm actually female.

No no, I don't think you get it.

He's not saying that girls are weak, or stupid, or don't work for anything. He's not saying anything that you should take offense to, at all, in any way.

He's saying that, like the OP's scenario, there are tons of guys who hop on FFXI, pretend to be girls, and take advantage of every horny nerd they can.

Perfect example: I used to play WoW. There was someone on the official WoW forums who posted a detailed story, with pictures, of how he made a fake Myspace page for a fake girl character that he pretended to be. He then got his job (Hunter, I think) to 60, and with barely any Tier 0 he managed to find an uber end-game guild. Within a month he had his Tier 2.5 gear. He said that he played like crap during the raids, too.

Point of this whole thing is, some people will do anything for someone who's pretending to be a cute, flirty girl. And some people will exploit this to the fullest.

/grin It's just something about that tail...
/laughs

My LS and I love bring it up subtlety when others are around, and watch people's reactions. It's pretty funny. The LS I'm in is really close most of us have each others numbers, we talk on TS, posted pictures of ourselves, and gone so far as meeting in real life. So there was never a chance for it not to come up or even to hid it. I can say after playing for two years, I'd never want to be anything else.

Why is it that I think the OP has been having feelings for this she-male and is trying to find a way to make himself not feel dirty lol.

The internet isn't exactly a horrible place to meet people, you just have to be smart about it lol.
