Well, I didn't have chance to ask the Tech Support guy anything else, and this is off topic, but has anyone else encountered this problem:

When doing an Escort quest or if you click on someone else's NPC, the game will crash out to the Desktop with a Windows error. It usually occurs when trying to Cure them or in the case of Escort, clicking to make them stop. I've tried reporting this to a GM via GM Call in PoL, but she refused to acknowledge it was a problem with the game and that it was my PC at fault.

I know 4 or 5 people who have had this exact same problem and each of our PCs can't be identical, yet SE refuse to see it as an error on their behalf. Last Escort quest I did in Eldieme Necropolis, 3 different people all dc-ed due to this problem. I was told to turn my effects filters off by the GM, and when I replied they were already off, I got: "I can assure you it's not a problem with the game code. I suspect it is an error with your graphics card, that it cannot handle the effects. If you have any further problems, please contact Tech Support about PC compatibility issues."

possible, but look at the implications of that. Without fail, someone WOULD find out eventually, and that would lead to major lawsuit from M$. while it would be interesting to see two corporate superpowers go up against each other, i think the laws would side with M$ on that one.

Sony already did this:

No lawsuit from MS either.

Wish I had read this thread earlier. Re-installing FFXI results in the loss of several .dll files which results in problem running Windows. >.<

I had backup my system a while back, but all those programs install between then had problem running because of missing files. ARG!

My guess?

After the windurst waters update, someone at SE tried to update the news feed that is automatically downloaded to POL viewer when we log in.

That person at SE goofed, and the news feed is causing a buffer overflow in the POL viewer. It'll probably take them a while, to find that the employee used an illegal escape or control code in the news update (likely inadvertantly) and the POL news veiwer can't render it, crashes.

Of course, we have the alarmists already claimed that SE is messing around with the "dll's and security of our windows" and "installing software to check for third party programs"

Long story short, when they find the error in the news feed, and remove it/fix it.. Our POL clients will work normally again without the need for a reinstall.

That couldn't be causing the DLL corruption we're seeing. My guess is that SE is attemtping some sort of rootkit like Sony tried and it's farking up windows (just as Sony's did)

GM friend just rang me. Who wants to know whats going on? Ill tell you.

The servers were hit by a hacker last night and the security of everyone is now compromised so they shut down the log in server out of panic. They are now updating the issues reported from the new Update (awesome update by the way). Do not reinstall, do not panic, go buy a blow up doll and while away the hours with **** and baby oil.

Also stop spammin PoL, its really REALLY slowing them down.

Hope this helps :D

At last a voice of reason. ^^

To the poster above the links between FFXI and windows DLLs are not new, they've been there are long time, as I posted near the beginning of the thread i've had 2 Friends whose kernel dlls were corrupted after a FFXI uninstall and this was weeks and months ago.

2 People are posting DLL corruption problems. Based on the number of posts to the thread, I'd assume that *if* a "rootkit" scheme was the culprit, the problem would be more widespread among the userbase than just 2 posts out of 3 pages.

grrr, you edited in another link i gotta read >.>

but after the first one, id say that it would be feasible that pol or se or both would do such a thing, probably due to wanting to know what third party stuff is being run while ffxi is... just a hunch.

do I have to low-format or SE is gonna fix this?

I wish all the worst luck to SE engineers...

If I do something bad at work I get fired....
if SE fails almost everyupdate something must be wrong. Or the engineers themself or the one who hires them...

13$ for what? format my pc?

If they know what is going on then why don't they post something on the playonline site to let us know. This would also help stop people from trying to contact support and spamming POL.

Just alittle side note to all the hundreds of posts i just read about this problem lol.. it doesnt have to do with the actual download of the new update because i logged off last night before the update and havent been back on to download it and im having the same problem as everyone else lol. my guess is that when the programmers where putting up the info on the POL viewer one of them must of got some dust in there eyes and mistypes in a scrpit or sumthing ^^. Well this is gunna be awhile to fix. Hopefully i can actually download the update and return to the world of Vana'diel and out of this cruel world called earth. but for know PSP it will be to pass some time.

Simple Words:

Had this very problem several times. If I click an npc then try and heal it, I crash to desktop.

Seems ok as long as I dont click it first.

Yup, they're certainly trying to let people know as quickly as possible.
