I'm testing a theory shortly that NPCs level up according to what their next level is. This explains why it takes progressively longer to get a level each time, yet not too much longer. I think their tnl is actually their next level.

I.E. Right now my NPC is 36; it will take 37 fights to get her to 37. I haven't counted yet... but so far I have 13 fights under her belt after hitting 36.

Hi, let's see I can coherently explain something that just happened to me, out of the ordinary.

Background:
I've been taking my npc out 2x in a row, with the exception of one time where I went twice right before 12 midnight jpn time and then right afterwards got a new pearl and then went out again. Of course I then had to wait 20 hrs to again use that pearl, and then drop it and repeat the process.

So today something different happened.
Its 9am est (or 10pm jpn time) and I was just told by Zen that I couldnt get another pearl after returning from my first of two trips with me this cycle.

Ok, that never happened before. I see the pearl option, but can't get it. Have they updated this? Maybe not.

So here is what I think has happened. And I never ran across it just because, well of when I play.

20 hrs ago (+ the 45 minute outing) I finished my 2nd of two outings. So that was - um.. 5 am est. (Yes I went to bed late, but its the weekend and your not my mother - j/k).

20 hrs before that would have been, um.. 1am est.

20 hrs before that would have been, well, 10am est.

20 hrs before that would have been, 6am est

I believe that a cycle has to be completed before we can get the second pearl. I believe that it has to be after 12 midnight jpn time (11am est)

During my normal course of playing I never ran into it, because I always ended going out the second time beyond the cycle. I even have taken him out 3x in a row, like I said, when it was right before jpn midnight.

So, if I haven't confused you (and I apologize cause I'm trying to figure this out and want your help in understanding this), I think that while we can take out our npc after 20 hours, for the second time, in order to get the new pearl, it has to be 24 hours since we dropped it last, or in relation to midnight jpn time.

I'll have to experiment somemore with this. But getting around it is easy, just have to schedule your outings in a way that allows you to get the second pearl right after. (An actual 24 hr period or near japan midnight.

I apologize if I've confuse anyone, and I'll come back and edit this for clarification perposes once I get some helpful feedback.

You have to wait until JP midnight has passed before you can get a new pearl. If timed right, you can call your NPC at 11pm jp time, fight for half an hour - 45 mins, go back, drop and then get a new pearl (before midnight JP time), fight for however long it takes, then drop your pearl and get a third one (it will now be after midnight JP time). You will now have to wait 20 hours from your timer for the next call, and then a further 3-4 hours until JP midnight again.

Well I just tryed to make my NPC dual weild axes... I tried trading it 2 at once, But she only toke of my axes. So i just traded my 2nd one to her and she toke it. I can't see if it worked since still have 2hrs before I call NPC ><. Wouldn't it most likely come out as Axe + Shield. Please ask your LS member how he got it to dual weild^^.

i know this is a dumb question, and i swear, im not a noob, but, can you make ur NPC a healer, and NOT use clubs >.>i wanna have a kewl Sam/nin(me) duo, but still get the most out of my Npc(healer).. so can a Healer Style use 2handers >.>?

You can have a healer that uses ANY weapon of your choice^^

I haven't seen my LS friend who has NPC dual wielding axes yet, but another friend of mine tried trading 2 at once with the same results as you had. He was "upgrading" his katana when he did it, so I wonder if maybe you have to dual wield 2 lvl 1 weapons first? or maybe use 2-hand weapon to make them drop the shield? I'm just speculating and I'll let you know when I get hold of him.

Yes you can, trade a greath katane to Luto and change npc's setting to be healer and wupti you have a healing npc with a greath katana lol.

People who see this reply to me, how can you have a healing npc with a greath katana and I say I don't know.. SE made it like that way.

Would be cool if you could chose a job where you chose what abilitys you want for it so you could have A+ with greath katana maybe and be able to do same curring as whm.

There would be soo many options and abilitys to do, if that was a option for us.

The one piece of innformation that I really want that nobody seems to have is what is the ultimate point of the NPC buddy?
#36 Jul 31 2005 at 6:01 PM Rating: Decent
Umm... to have fun?
It seems like a quest if you ask me. I wouldnt be surprised if it evolves into some kind of contest later on.

Well, do they ever stay out longer than 15 fights/45 mins? I would love to be able to duo with my NPC instead of partying but, knowing SE's thoughts on groups I guess that will never really be a viable way to level exclusively.

Ok, I took my NPC out today after asking her to change her headgear. Since she's an attacker, she was sporting a bronze cap type of thing, not a blue bandana.

Has anyone noticed a Treasure Hunter effect? I notice that dhalmels now drop 3-4 items for me now, as opposed to 1 when I first began leveling the NPC.

So far, I've never had my NPC stay out longer than 15 fights. I'll try the timer next time to see if I don't fight anything if she'll leave after 45 mins. Not aware of anyone else's staying out for longer either, but this MAY change after lvl 40 or 50?

(I'm speculating here)

How do I talk to my NPC? In say? What do I say to get him to stay? I took him out today and was running around and jibbering.
"Let's go" "Come on" "good job"
lol! I felt like an idiot

One more question. I don't understand about dropping the pearl. I have called my NPC twice and did not drop anything. I'm I doing something wrong?

# 12) After about 19 calls, you can get the option at the rendezvous point to switch headgear. It appears that it's either worn or it's not, but it's possibly that it's headband or hairpin (which wouldn't show up) but the only ppl who have mentioned getting this option use their NPCs as a healer.
my NPC is attacker and i was able to change her headgear. i tried changing it a bunch of times but i only notice a purple-ish headband or none at all.

Since mine has a bronze cap thing, I'm led to believe that the headgear is not static. Has anyone had their NPC's headgear change after a session?

I think mines had some sort of headgear on once because she came out with a doublet set on once, but now shes back to scale after being out 45 min.

# 9) You can first give your NPC a new weapon after 6 (or possibly 5, anyone tried it after 5?) calls

Negative, it's 6th call, not 5th. I tried getting it after 5th call today and nothing from either Luto or NPC.

You can't "talk" to your NPC. They just come out with random comments. You can turn it off with the chat filters, but then you won't know when it has full tp, is low on health, or low on mp.

after using your pearl, rather than wait for the 20 hour timer to run out, you can unequip your signal pearl, then drop it. After you drop it, go to the rendezvous point in one of the towns and speak to your NPC. There will now be an option which says "I need a Signal Pearl". choose this one and then you can call your NPC again. You then have to wait for your 20 hour timer to run out and then repeat the process (use, drop, get a new, use, wait).

When Lvling my NPC in Altepa, I noticed that if the NPC got killing blow, I got more drops.

I was lvl 67 RDM/BLM.

Maybe because the mobs are closer to her lvl? IDK?

You can also control them saying their status with these when you talk to them at the rendevous point.

Their comments aren't even really very random. They always say the same things under every condition. I do hope they make them a little more verbose.

Claymore (level 10) (Great Sword) damage 22 delay 444
Butterfly Axe (level 5) (Great Axe) damage 19 delay 504

Two-Hand. Sword (level 20) (Great Sword) damage 35 456
Greataxe (level 12) (Great Axe) damage 30 delay 504

as you can see, GS always has higher damage than GA, does this mean GS is better than GA? Someone in my LS doesnt believe GS is better and he said GA does more damage, I dont really believe so, otherwise GS damage is only a number. But there is also a possibility that the NPC is war type no matter if you choose healer type, GA is A+ for WAR, that could explain it. Please can someone tell me weather GA has better damage or GS has better damage for NPC? Thx
