Hello people.

I have a few questions if some of you have the time.

If I levelled up a Warrior to lvl 10 and then decided to change jobs to Black Mage and then back to Warrior again, would I have lost all my Warrior levels? Will the levels you gain in a job stay forever?

The whole changing jobs and levels half you main job and so on
seems quite complex. Could someone provide a link to some info?

What jobs does a highlevel group consist of? I want to be a bard, I think - are they necessary in every group, and what is the best starting class when I want to be a bard?

Sorry if this has been asked 1212857 times before.
Is there a search function on this board?? :)

1) You don't lose any levels/skills acquired from previous jobs.

BUT, combat skills are capped on a pure level basis. For instance. I'm a level 31 warrior, my evasion is capped at 89. When i switch to my lvl 15 Dragoon, my evasion is capped at 30 (can't remember the actually number). When I level to 16 Dragoon, my evasion will be capped at 33.

2) It's not really that complicated.

Using the above example. I"m 31 Warrior, switch to DRG. I'm level 15 DRG/ level 7 Warrior. WHen level to 16, it will be 16/8.

If level to DRG 65, it would be 65/31 because my warrior is at 31 for its highest level.

If going to be a Bard eventually.. I'd start Thief or White Mage.

There isn't a thread search function. There really needs to be an FAQ for this site.

edit: Mage skills are capped like combat skills.

the best part of the change job system is that if u don't like your current job, just change it. if you're not sure which you want to do, try them all.

your warrior will stay at lvl 10 unless you die and lose enough EXP to become lvl 9. All of the combat/magic skills you have learned will not be lessened if you switch to another job.

You can change jobs as much as you want to whatever you want, and it won't affect your current job in a negative way. Your support job is always half the level of your main job. Example:
blm18/whm9 - Your sub white mage will only be able to use spells lvl9 and lower, and your effectiveness at white magic skills will be lower because the caps are lower at lvl9 than at lvl18.

Bards are VERY needed in the higher levels, and I wouldn't turn one down in the lower levels either. I heard that bards are particularily sought after for BCNM (burning circle nortorious monster) fight. I can't speak from personal experience of post 30 parties, but it seems to me like bard will be a wanted class for sure.

Sorry, I couldn't think of a good link to give you.

Ah, great. Thanks, that explains a lot.

I asked what is the best class when wanting to be a bard - What I really wanted to ask was what race :p

So, one more - Which race is best for White Mage, wanting to be a bard?

Levels stay forever. I still have my 5 levels as a thief even though I haven't touched that in months.

Jobs and subjobs really aren't that complicated. The maximum level for a subjob is 1/2 the level of the main job.

That means if you are a 20th level Warrior and a 10th level Monk, if you decide to become a Warrior/Monk, you'd be a 20/10 warrior/monk. If you decide to be a Monk/Warrior, you'd be a 10/5 monk/warrior. Even though you're Warrior is at 20, it's capped by being half the level of the main job.

Your armor and weapons are limited to what your main job can have (meaning if you're determined to be a White Mage/Warrior, you're not going to be able to put Chain Mail on). Some job abilities do transfer from the sub-job (As a Warrior/Monk, I could use the Monk's Boost).

Though it's not my opinion, Bards tend not to get much respect until the 20s. That's not necessarily fair or right, it's just the way things seem to be. The most useful Bards, it seems, are Bard/White Mages.

As for advanced group composition, they seem to be focused on One Healer, One Tank, Several Melee and then some support. There can be multiple classes that can fill some of these roles, and various Main/Sub jobs can assist in filling them out.

Hope that helps some.

Everyone is here to learn...

Every job you lvl stays and will not dissappear

Changing jobs is in fact really easy.
E.g. you lvl your main job Thief until 18, and you got your sub job items... you get back at mog house and you want a Warrior sub.. set your main to Warrior and your sub to Thief...

It will look like this: lvl 1 war / lvl 1 thief

you keep lvling your warrior until its lvl 10 and your thief will be lvl 5...

Your sub will only stay half of your main...
You could lvl your warrior to 36 before you have to lvl your thief again, because it is at 18. and it will look like this:

lvl 36 War/ lvl 18 Thief

If you want to lvl your Thief that is still lvl 18 and you set your sub to war it will look like this:

lvl 18 Thief / lvl 9 War

Thats because your sub AGAIN can only be half of your main... even if your war is really lvl 36...

Hope that makes any sence.

High level group consists mainly about anvance jobs... when you hit lvl 30 with your starting job, you have the possibility to get your andvance jobs... you have to do a quest for it... there are several possibilities and i'm aint going to list em :P
But the bard you are saying is an advance job...

And there isnt a search function here... too bad

Hope it helps ya!

race is an interesting topic. some will say that each job has a specific race that should be used. others say, play any race because you can buy equipment that will give stat bonuses to improve the race's weakness.

a good player can make a bad race/job combo good.

a bad player can make a good race/job combo bad.

race isn't a HUGE issue. hume, taru, and elvaan all lend themselves well enough to bard. with white mage, all three do just fine again. I wouldn't suggest mithra just because thier charisma is pretty low. I myself am about to make the race decision on a similarily classed character.

If you want to maximize spell potential taru is best for MP pools, and elvaan with have stronger spell potency. (note spells cap out and extra spell strength starts to matter less, but if you are subbing whm it might make more of a difference than if whm was your main)

If you want to be able to take a few hits (which bards sometimes do, particularily in really tough fights like BCNMs) elvaan and hume are a good bet.

All races can be effective at all jobs, some will just have it easier than others is all :) I've heard of galka bards do just fine as well. So really, it is up to how you want to look, and act (if you roleplay).
