Next month, EverQuest will turn 20 years old. Together, we've shared 20 rich years of magical moments and created countless memories in Norrath.

Of course, we're excited to keep creating this magic with all of you. Beginning on EverQuest's 20th Anniversary, we will have the chance to start together in Norrath once again, on the new Progression Servers Selo and Mangler. These True Box Progression Servers will launch on Saturday, March 16, 2019 for EverQuest's 20th Anniversary!

What is a True Box Progression Server?

An EverQuest Progression Server is a way to experience EverQuest as it grew over time. It begins with access to only the original zones that were available at a specific point in the game’s history, then gradually adds expansions at varying intervals specific to the rules of the server. On a True Box server, each player will only be able to play on one EverQuest account from their computer. We want to encourage players to play with their friends on this server, and not just form groups of only their alts. If people are truly wanting to multi-box, they’ll have to do it the old-fashioned way - with a whole lot of computers!

Selo Progression Server

The Selo Server will be a "fast" or "casual" Progression Server. This means that gaining experience will be much easier, with experience nearly double that of Ragefire or Lockjaw when the server launches. Additionally, instances can be reused more often, rares are more likely to spawn, and faction is earned more quickly.

This server will start during the Shadows of Luclin era, and will unlock new expansions on the first Wednesday of each month, starting with The Planes of Power on May 1, 2019. Once the server catches up to the present era, it will become a Live server.

For more detailed information on Selo, you can read the server FAQ here.

Mangler Progression Server

The Mangler Progression Server will be a more hardcore server that is tuned to feel similar to the original EverQuest launch - perfect for those who are looking for a challenge. Experience rates will be slightly lower than those on other Progression Servers, and players will lose more experience on death.

Unlocks will initially happen every 12 weeks, but after Gates of Discord unlocks, expansions that do not include a level cap increase will remain current for just 8 weeks before the next unlock. If an expansion does include a level cap increase, it will last for a full 12 weeks before the next expansion is released.

For more details on Mangler, you can check out the server FAQ here.

Like other Progression and special ruleset servers, you must have an All Access Membership to play on either of these servers. In addition to letting you join the server, All Access Memberships include other great benefits, like 10% off most Marketplace purchases, and a claimable 500 DBC grant each month! For more details and to sign up for membership, you can visit the Membership page here.

Whether you're gearing up for a challenge, or just looking to enjoy the adventure again, we can't wait to see you on Saturday, March 16, 2019!

I am intrigued at the warping of the word "casual" to mean "fast".

Judging by the volume of angry posts at the official boards, this is not a universally-agreed upon EQ player definition (like say "orc 1").

I think they did good on Mangler's ruleset. Mangler's ruleset is new and something that doesn't compete with the other rulesets. That was important to keep bleed out from the other current TLP servers. It'll be interesting to see the population play out on that server over time.

However, they really shouldn't had advertised Selo as an ultra casual server with 1 month unlocks. They should had said it was a race server from the beginning.

I think there's one aspect of "casual" you're missing. If you don't play a lot of hours, this accelerated leveling and name spawning is a way to get the levels, and the gear, without having to play as many hours. So, in that sense, it does support casuals.

That's true if you don't care about what expansion the server is in and you don't look through the bazaar for upgrades. However if you do raid as a casual, by the time they level up, another expansion will open up. With that, new TS gear and drops from the new expansion will be on the bazaar negating the gear your casual guild is working on in the previous expansion.

Casual as in limited in playtime vs. hardcore.
Casual as in limited in aspirations vs. hardcore.

racing/competition would likely only appeal to a hardcore/hardcore kind of player. 1 month unlocks is kind of silly, should have just made it an actual racing server which generally means 1 month unlocks but at least the race is real... and called it what it was. Selos as presented is partly pregnant.

This fast server... maybe sort of works for casual playtime with hardcore aspirations. Not sure how many of those types there are, that didn't settle for the (successful) compromise that is Phinny and are seeing it through as long as their guild keeps going.

A hardcore playtime person with casual aspirations (i.e., interested in dabbling all over the place, maybe with a lot of alts, or interested in working towards maxing out one character in-era in the solo/group game) is probably better served playing on the Mangler "hardcore" server even though the slow XP and harsher death penalty probably don't add fun.

A casual playtime, casual aspirations ---or just someone that wants to do a lot in the early eras, got ignored on this one. Crummy if you were hoping to do it with population, as your best bet is to go onto Agnarr (locked) or another existing progression server. Ironically to me... this is the group I would have been keenest to serve a 20th anniversary server up to.

Using your defs, I guess I'd be a casual/hardcore. And those rules sound appealing, if i were looking to start on a TLP (which I'm not).

When you look at all of the things which can be timesinks in EQ (and they are myriad), setting up a server to relieve timesinks seems like an obvious hat-tip to time-bound casuals (the first term). Not sure how you'd even approach a server for the second-term casuals? Fewer aspirations/less focus? Seems any ruleset might appeal to them.

But mostly, for me, being a long-term playtime casual, there's still plenty to do on a Live server. So, no plans to check out any of the TLPs. Best wishes to those who do try them.

I have enjoyed playing on P99 and a couple of the mainstream progression servers because like many people I do enjoy going back to the low level old zones and reliving at least a bit of the fun and excitement and even terror of my first experience with EQ. But sometimes those levels go by a bit slowly, especially on P99, and the nostalgia effect gets drowned out by tedium. A server where we can relive the early adventures but at a faster clip, and where we don't have to camp those low level nameds for literally DAYS to get loot (especially if it will quickly be replaced by better loot from rapidly approaching expansions) has dual appeal: nostalgia but quickish advancement.,

I think at least one of the two servers is a great idea. Although I'm surprised they're opening 2 at once.

I appreciate the rule of no boxing, but it would be nice if they allowed a second box only. It would allow for a short play session when there isn't time to hunt down a group.

No boxing, or no boxing on the same PC? Set up a laptop next to your PC, and you're good to go.

Two machines is tougher. When I first made a second account years ago, I was using 2 machines. It has its challenges. Not ideal. Don't have a laptop either. I am looking forward to starting new on one of these servers, but I just wish I could 2 box.

An Update to Selos and Mangler
https://www.everquest.com/news/eq-selo-mangler-progression-server-update-20th-anniversary-2019

Greetings Norrathians,

From the first announcement of our 20th Anniversary plans, we said that this year was about the EverQuest community, a celebration we'd all be excited to be a part of. When we announced the upcoming Progression Servers, it made quite a splash, and players let us know that we hadn't quite hit the mark.

We heard your feedback, reviewed all of the different concerns and suggestions, and spent the past week revisiting in detail the experiences that we wanted to craft on these new servers. With that in mind, we have made some changes to the rulesets for the upcoming Selo and Mangler Progression Servers.Large Text

Selos could be a lot of fun, methinks.

I have to confess... I feel mostly listened to (as an EQ player) in respects to my official boards feedback and what they did. I think this is because I was trying to see some big picture compromises that many others wanted too rather than having a personal stake in playing on either of the servers:

1. they removed the casual and hardcore labels
2. they left the selos ruleset alone and renamed it "Fast Progression"
3. they removed the low XP and death penalty from Mangler that was going to turn away more people --it even has better XP than Phinny & Coirnav started with (nice).

one thing they did that I agree with that some are complaining about is:

4. leave focus effects era-set to Luclin. Changes the gear economy on Mangler, and slightly tunes back players to the content.
