What is with the extended maintenance on brand new (so to speak) servers? What do they do when contemplating a new server, send someone down to a basement and see if there is any useful equipment under the dust that can be used to cobble together a system? Smiley: lol

I have a theory that they're preparing for server mergers. But, don't quote me. =)

You are confusing a new server (the "realm" or whatever named copy of EQ you play, i.e. Tunare, Quarm, etc), and a computer server, that is, a literal CPU (or, these days, several connected CPUs, each of which has multiple cores) along with it's associated memory and other support electronics.

The extended maintenance on the "servers" could be anything. Could be updating the computers, the network which supports them all, or even the supporting s/w that controls all of this. And these days, most of the individual servers (the individual PCs) are instanced, as needed, from a pool, and could very well be virtualized (another level of abstraction).

Like Tat said, what you see as a "server" in the game is really a whole set of integrated compute resources. My experience is that when someone sets up a new server in that sense, they often forget to do something on the back end that makes the whole integrated bit work properly (or even just efficiently). This mistake is usually something at a low enough level (like say how memory or cpus are shared across a set of virtualized hardware somewhere), that they have to take down everything associated with the object in order to fix it. Which, from a game play perspective means the server has to come down.

Radarx shed some light on why they are doing server maintenance. Here is a quote from him on the EQ forums.

Quote:
This maintenance is being done across all servers and has been rolled out over the last few months. It's to address an infrastructure issue which can cause instability and occasional server crashing. The goal is to improve overall game performance.

That's about as specific as I can provide.

It's probable that this has something to do with future server merges but he wouldn't leak that out of a reply to a post. That would be a big announcement from probably Holly.
