Time to get rid of armor dye in EQ?Follow

Hold the pitchforks and flaming torches for a moment...

I am of the opinion that armor dye was one of the big mistakes made in the evolution of this game. Before dye, it was perfectly reasonable to itemize a few armor sets at a level range with similar stats in different colours. In some cases you'd even sacrifice some stats for a look (i.e., gnome skin for the black). If you had something rare (especially robes) it was more obvious. It also meant that not everyone was red and black. Sometimes it would compel you to want to hunt to "get rid of these arms that don't match".

The Devs seemed to be thinking of this when they almost released the Drakkin incompatable with armor dye. They caved to forum rage there.

Heroes forge offers a compromise though:

Replace armor dye with Heroes Forge as a feature of the Legacy of Ykesha expansion. This keeps progression servers with that old school feel, while at the same time giving something to everyone on live. Enough money should have been made on the activation part of Heroes Forge, this creates more demand for the ornamentations. Maybe remove most dropping ornamentations from game and make them seasonal and one-time event things with alternate access (and more options) in the marketplace. Can also add recipes to create armor ornamentations of the "missing" original looks in a given colour.

They'd get to add "black banded, red banded, etc." to the marketplace as well which would just monetize the current looks many have.

Ornamentation sets would then make more sense as a bundled perk of buying an expac.

Thoughts? (tweaks, suggestions, opposition, dismissal...)

I've never cared what anything looked like in the game. Not sure what percentage of the market really cares about this aspect of the game. (I'm not implying it's a small percentage. I literally have no idea how popular it is.)

I've only dyed stuff when making tailored bags, to make it easier to know which bag is which. In that case, I'm a HUGE fan of the dye system :)

I use the dye system all the time. This stems from years of my High Elf Pally having to run around with almost pink legs (no comments from the peanut gallery about this being appropriate for High elves, both males and females Smiley: lol). I used the dye as soon as I got my hands on it. I would be a little upset if it were to disappear.

I also don't care for Heroes Forge. I have the viewing option for that turned off. It reminds me of a poor man's set of WoW armour.

Yeah I just realized I can dye my bags... I'm a huge proponent of that. Armor dye? Ehhh. I think it comes down to choice, you can choose to look how ya want :)

I don't think Daybreak will make Heroes Forge FFA since it's a minor money maker that only a few choose to use as is. The only way they could or should make it FFA would be if the Heroes Forge started getting DB Market only items (like a Tuxedo armor set...which i would love.)

I use the dye myself. I have never cared for the Luclin PC models and only use them for characters that I want the benefit of a mount for. Therefore, the Hero's Forge stuff does not appeal to me. I might use it with a Drakkin model, but I haven't found it worth spending the money on yet.

Honestly, I loved when they put the armor dyes into the game, and still use it. I never really liked that different armors had different colors. Those of you who played back in the day remember the sea of obnoxiously mashed up armor colors. Players hated the idea that you either had to look ok, or have good armor. It was nearly impossible to do both, since every new set seemed to come in a different color than the last. Armor dye allowed you to pick a color scheme and keep it, no matter what actual armor you were wearing, which I suspect most players still desire (any who aren't using HF augments anyway).

Ironically, while I do like the look of HF gear, and it doesn't have the color matching issues (assuming you use a single set), it does result in far far too many people looking more or less identical. At least back in the day of our mismatched armor, you could tell who was who because it was also very unlikely that more than one character of a given race/sex in the area had the exact same set of gear. With dye, each could customize their own color, also making each distinct. With HF, we've actually lost a fair amount of customization.

Personally, I really like the fact that I don't have to do anything at all to keep the color scheme I picked out years and years ago. Since the dye is on the location and not the gear (even in augment form), it's something you really just have to do once and then forget about it. My big turnoff with HF is that you first have to pay to unlock the capability of using the aug slots, then pay for the augs themselves. All so you can basically walk around in a stock appearance that looks neato, but isn't customizable in any way. Even if they make all of that free (which I suspect they won't), I don't see the problem with keeping the prismatic dye in the game as well. It's not like it breaks anything.

If they made hero's forge a free feature (or at least free with all access) Id be ok with it.

On the plus side, it was badass in the old days to see a cleric in their purple plate and my bard used to look uniquely stellar in her turquoise Koada`Dal mithril plate.

I used armor dye all the time back in the day. Now that hero's forge is out, I just use it instead. Love some of the ornaments.

A while back, I ran across a bunch of old screenshots from back in the day. Usually group shots of our guild at the end of a raid day in like Hate/Fear/Sky/whatever. OMG! Hideous. The only people who looked decent were the druids. And that's because they were in wolf form. Everyone else was sporting random bits of black, blue, pink, red, etc. And multiple shades of each. At least the dress wearers weren't too terrible since it was basically just their hat, shoes, and gloves poking out from behind a single colored robe. But the plate/chain wearers?
