Best place to grind for the Intricate defiant?Follow

#1 Sep 07 2013 at 9:25 AM Rating: Decent
I have a level 96 shd and will have no problem pulling a whole zone and killing it so where is the best spot to farm the Intricate defiant? In the level 60 hot zone or what? Thx

No place in particular. Just any level 37-70 mob, and mostly 50-63 level. I farmed HoH alot, and saw quite a bit drop there, but any place with the level range and you do lots of killing you'll see them drop.

Looking up the specific types and seeing what's listed often gives a good idea of zones to try. For example, Intricate Defiant Chain Leggings at https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=75201

I got all my intricate defiant off of the golems and dragoons in Firiona Vie. It seems to me from casual glance that it can get dropped off anything, and there's no particular place for certain kinds. I've also picked up high end gear off of low end mobs, so there must be something about your level in the algorithm, as well as the mob level

If the level 60 hotzone is empty then sure...

With your power/level you would probably find something full of mobs that is harder to level in (so more likely to be empty) better though. The Steppes, Plane of Fire, Veeshan's peak the right level range for Intricate?

How about Old Sebilis? At least it is fun to farm!

Those zones work too, snailish. Just get more of the next set (Elaborate?) more often, and seems like a bit less frequent of the intricate due to the higher levels. CoD, HoH, BoT, all mostly prime level for the intricate stuff.

No one mentioned bottom of the hole, I just pull the entire place when I'm making naggy twinks. One full zone clear nets about 60 pieces of gear usually.

I've seen lots drop in Ferubi, as well as in Solusek Ro's Tower. I got a few pieces in Ferubi Yesterday, there was at least 3 or 4 intricate defiant drops.

Sebilis usually drops ornate cloth wristband, haven't had anything else drop defiant wise anywhere off any mob in the zone.

This is the best advice. If you need particular pieces, you can farm plat to buy what's in the Bazaar faster than farming the specific piece.

Farm where it might drop, where you also can farm plat/sellables. If you see your piece for sale, farm til you have enough to buy it.

Zone doesn't matter. Everything drops everywhere, for level appropriate gear. In other words, if you want Intricate, hunt in zones for that level, elaborate higher level, and elegant higher than that. But Defiant gear is on the global drop table. There's no specific place to hunt for it.

Tat makes a great point, and what is probably the general way to approach it.

Global drops are not necessarily well-reported here (when they first started doing this, yes --there was a month or so blip of lots of submissions, but once the playerbase decided "most of this is junk that drops everywhere" we stopped getting submissions as often. Particularly for the tradeskill mats).

We actually do want to know every NPC that drops "Flawed Defiant chain bracer" or "dry yadda yadda" or "silk variety #35" because there actually are some patterns:

Because some zones cluster NPC at certain level ranges, you can hunt specific areas for a specific drop. Think of Lower Guk... nearly a 20 level range in well-populated NPC camps. You're going to get a different kind of defiant depending on which side of the zone you hunt in. ***if the level range crosses a defiant drop range (just mentioning Guk as a familar zone).

The inverse of this is that when we have several hundred NPC reported as a source of Intricate Defiant Breastplate you will get a better sense of whether Barren Coast (1 known level 53 NPC drops it) vs. Sewers of Nihilia: Pool of Sludge (4 known level 58-62 NPC drop it) is a better place for your particular character to hunt this item. But... right now only about 25 NPC are reported for this drop. It could very well be that there are 12 NPC in Blackfeather Roost (only 2 reported presently) that drop this item. Also, beware the zone with a few NPC above the level cut of a particular global drop of the rest. Think of Guk again... there aren't that many NPC in the zone that are level 49 or 50, so if you want a drop that comes from let's say level 50-54 NPC... don't go to Lower Guk.

Blackfeather Roost has a lot of NPC in a relatively small zone... a level 55-60 hunting gear to wear in Blackfeather is not going to run out of NPC (a level 100 would be able to clear it all and have to wait on respawns most likely). If I had to put a bet on "best places to hunt under level 75 global drops" I would guess TSS zones, dungeons from classic to Velious (Luclin-PoP as a much higher level character to give you the kill rate... goal is farming drops after all) LoY has some NPC-dense zones with narrow level ranges, and any instanced content that spawns at a set level range (especially if you can get the instance as grey cons).

It's a shame the functionality to report the mob along with the drops can't be built-in to Item Collector.

In general yes, but in this case, it REALLY doesn't matter. Literally every mob in a given level range can drop it, with a miniscule chance per mob. The best way to increase your chances (other than buying it in the Bazaar) is to find a zone with very fast respawn, or where you can cover as many mobs as possible before respawn, and just mass slaughter.

Also, I think you misunderstood Snailish's comment. I think he was talking about manual submissions. The item collector (i think. Gonna start using it as soon as it is fixed) should report that.

Yes every level 50 NPC has the same rare chance of dropping the level 50 defiant. At times (cough) we have noted discrepancies in the reported levels of NPCs. Getting all the defiant drops reported and linked to NPCs will, in a way, cross check this.

Zone design matters because some NPC spawn in a level range that could (theoretically at least) change which defiant you get. Some zones have way more NPC than others. Some zones are much easier to find/kill in. If a zone has numerous different named NPCs at a level range, it will be more obvious when you look up your defiant. What it won't do for you is tell you that another zone only has 2 types of NPC in that level range, but a population of 200 of them in the zone to farm.

Respawn time of the zone would absolutely be a factor in planning for a mass-kill farming session.

To my awareness, no older version of the item collector knew where the item came from, NPC drop, quest reward, forage or groundspawn is all manual entry based on user submission. We certainly had a pile of TBM items with no known sources when it was launched. I would love to be misinformed about this.

Honestly, I've never bothered to go hunting for any specific type/level of defiant gear. Just hunt where you want to hunt with your characters, then sell the stuff you get in the bazaar, and use the cash you get to buy the stuff you need. Character's level up so fast that I'm not sure you could or should spend the time farming for a specific set of defiant for an alt. Just buy what you want/need and replace as the character levels IMO.
