Guide Program: Ever Volunteered?Follow

I was a guide for about 5 months until I could no longer fill the duties required and I got out. It was a lot of fun to be on the Guide side of events. I never really had to handle complaints, though that's not the real function of a guide anyway. Guides exist to take a complaint and escalate it to the GM's, and to run events and talk to people in game. It can be fun if you have the right mindset.

I went to fill out the application but there was alot of things including some zones I had never heard of at that point. I filled it out as best I could but never heard back from them.

Those early days, 2001-02, I spent ALOT of time on EQ and probably would have been the best time, for me, to be a guide as I was on almost all the time. After 2002 I started spending less time playing so when I did play I wanted to acually do some progression, so I never followed up or reapplied.

I missed the guides when they changed to customer service of India. They gave the game a more personal touch.

Have considered being a Guide for many years on and off. Just never filled in the application completely as I do not have knowledge with programming, etc. and felt unqualified. Although I have played since 2001 just before Luclin came out.

Was one of the original 20 guides from beta. Was accepted into the program during Beta 3, and spent most of my time in EQ during beta guiding not playing. Of the original 5 servers, I was assigned to The Rathe and played (and still do play) on Xegony. I was accepted largely on the fact that I had been a Sr. Guide from Meridian59 and had experience helping people.

I left the guide program 3 months after launch because at the time the guide program demanded 10 hours per week of your time and that was half my then play time. I preferred to pay for my account and play 20 hours as opposed to getting my account for free and spending half my time doing administrative work.

I was guide Aauudar (randomly picked), though I doubt anyone remembers me.

could u imagine...
maken your hobby/past time into a job... and not even get paid for it...

tis a game, to wind down from a hectic day...

IMHO the guides could be better utilized by employing/deploying them as guild associates to baby guilds... by helping new people to the game, assisting new people to develope there toons and assisting baby gulds in developing raid leading skills and leadership needed in running a guild, also they can help new players on specific and known tasks and mini raids for progression and fun... there are lots of known baby guilds in game... guides could be informed of new players by GM and SoE and be directed to get them guilded and on the path to knowing the game before they move on to something else...

just my 2 cents worth of blabber... disengagen da fingers from keyboard now

I applied and was accepted last year. I had fun, I just applied at the wrong time. Work and kids bogged me down and I found myself making excuses to either my senior guide because I didn't log in enough or to my non gaming fiance for not spending enough time with him.

I will add though, finding enough people in noob zones to do the events was really hard...I could only log in during the day and never could find any other guides who could get on at the same time as me to help run things.

Once I had a guide fix a mob. It was the spell vendor for my druid and he was standing on top of the druid stone thing in North Karana. Too far out of my reach to purchase spells. The guide just whacked him and then hit some FD spell and we waited for the vendor to path back to his spot to sell spells.

One time there were three guides in Overthere zone as named Cactus toons. I was sitting beside the shore waiting for the boat to arrive to go to South Ro and one started beating on me. In my attempt to run away, I missed my boat, aggroed some sarnaks, and died to the sarnaks for an exp loss death.

Upon attempting to loot my corpse, I was killed by one of the goblin roamers for a second exp loss death. My third run from Cabilis got me both corpses but no rezes since the event was over and no guild and no clerics in zone. Over an hour later I finally got on the boat to Antonica, thouroughly upset at the guide program, and down two exp loss deaths.

Another time I was in an exp group in North Ro and a guide attacked us in some illusion. We all scattered and lived, but back in the day it was hard to find a good group for exp grinding, and having a guide blow the evening for us was no help at all.

Ever since then I have gone out of my way to avoid contact with guides and their events. It was not until lvl 80 that I thought I would venture into Butcherblock mtns for a 'drake egg hunt', that I was involved in another guide event. I was told by a drake attempting to speak 'drake-like' that I needed to recover her eggs from the bandits in the hills. I killed about 5 lvl 10 bandits and got an egg and handed it to the drake. I was rewarded with a temporary bag with a couple gems like Malachite in it. I just dropped it on the ground and left not saying a word.

In my opinion guides should never get in players business. If they are nothing but a buff team in newbie zones or help summon/rez ppl and other things WHEN REQUESTED, then ok. But killing off ppl for exp loss no rez deaths is totally uncool.

I would never ever consider being a guide and will always forever avoid guides.

-edit-
I forgot, there was another time I met up with 3 guides disguised as hill giants in west commonlands. Our group was keeping a gnoll camp clear and also pulling misc spiders and stuff from behind us for filler exp. The guides proceded to announce to the zone that the zone was theirs and they would kill any player they met. They did this in 'giant-speak' with the intention of tongue-in-cheek intimidation. Two of us were killed by them (while we were busy with gnolls) and the rest scattered. Some high-level guyz (lvl 50) eventually came by and took out the three giants, but by that time our play time was totally wasted. After the event was over, some other players probably claimed our camp since the gnoll camps were contested back then.

I've been guiding for several years. Sony has changed the guides origional job description from customer service to almost exclusively doing little " GM events" that are intended to offer players a break from regular grinding out levels or gaining access to new areas. Guides are not the "game police", that burden is now the responsibility of Sony Customer Service.

If you are thinking about applying, remember that you are essentily applying for a job. Grammer, spelling and punctuation matter (... and I do have a few spelling issues!)Good typing skills are very helpful! You do not have to be a "high end" player, but a good understanding of the lore, culture, and mechanics of the game is helpful. Most importantly, you must follow the rules.

Just because one application was rejected, or you never heard back from the program, doesn't mean that you can't reapply. It took me a couple of tries to get accepted.

I do enjoy being a guide. The time I spend participating in guide related activites seldom is more than a couple of hours a week. I do encourage players to check out the program.
