Is it worth itFollow

Hey everyone. I read several of the posts on the forum, but I am still having trouble deciding if I want to come back after leaving EQ so many years ago. I read some things about there being a lack of new players and this could be a problem.. if there aren't many low levels to group with. I am starting a new character and I don't want to be the only low level running around, that would be pretty boring. Plus I'd have to catch up on expansions. I just can't decide if it's worth it, so if anyone can offer their opinion I'd appreciate it.

Playing WoW now.. got old fast.

there are enough low levels, but you end up only getting good groups in 'hot spots' or really popular spots these days. Usually you end up with an uber raiders twink who could carry the whole group. It is not like it used to be but it is still fun. There is a free 21 day trail going on untill october and you can use your old charachter unlike other trials they had where you had to start a new one.

I believe there is a download at the EQ main site you can get for free, and also get a 21 day trial.

You can always try that and see if you are ready to come back!

No one else can make this decision for you :)

You should have no problem returning. Check your old account. Your toons should still be there and you may be entitled to some of the veteran's rewards. Also with the new tutorial I've noticed there are a lot of new twinks running around in lower level zones which you could group with. Due to mudflation you should be able to equip your character with great equipment for a fraction of what they used to cost. With the hotzones you should be able to level up quickly to a point where finding groups shouldn't be a problem. As far as the expansions go, it all depends on your level prior to leaving. I would at least get DoN for the guild lobby. Finally, there are many people returning to EQ after having tried some of the other mmo's.

My experience has been much more enjoyable since returning for the reasons stated above. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the responses. The reason I'm starting a new character is because when I left, I gave all my gear and money that I could to my guild leader. They are long since gone so I'd just rather start fresh.. also because I may have a friend of mine coming along and they have never played it before. I guess I'll look around a little more before I make any decisions. Thanks again!

Well just to give you an idea, when I came back it was a fresh start as well. With my prior knowledge and without twinking I was able to get a berserker to 17 in a few days. Then I used him to gather up all the noob equipment to start a warrior. In 2 months playing around 2-4 hours a day on average I got him to 45. If you are going to start with a friend it should be much easier as you can make toons that can compliment each other.

I recently started a war/cleric combo to go through the tutorial and in around 5 hours got them both to level 12 with very moderate twinking. From there I went to unrest, PC and back to unrest. Just dinged 27 on each in about a week. I'll check how much actual play time and I'll post it.

The point is, for me the game is now much more fun and the lower levels really fly by.

Hmm. Sounds good so far. So what about the old areas? Which ones are these? I heard that no one would go to them because the item drops and exp is terrible. I'd like a heads up on which areas we're talking about, so I don't end up there.

Vhei, sems like you're on the fence and like to refer to zones that you once knew....but look at the other side of the coin: There will be Much more New stuff for you to experience!

If you answer YES to the following question then take the plunge..:

Did you enjoy playing EQ before your stopped?

In general any old world zones are out of the question if you're only concerned with grouping, exp and loot, that is with the exception of those which are current hotzones. The only old world zones which I continue to visit are Unrest from level 10-15 and Lguk 30-45. The reason I like these is fairly simple.
Unrest: The yard trash doesn't run and there are so many things to kill its non-stop action.
LGuk: When you hit 30 those undead frogs give pretty good exp/cash/FS weaps. Since you'll be with your friend hopefully one of you will have a tank and the other some healing class. It should be a lot of fun hunting the bed room and the spider cave.
Many people here could give you other/better suggestions but I kinda partial to those zones. Other old world zones I like are oasis (orc highway) 15-20 and solb 45+. From Velious, Lake of Ill Omen was great when RoK came out but with the ZEM its not worth it anymore and Crystal Caverns/EW (Rygorr Camp) in the mid 30's to mid 40's was great also. I left shortly after that so dont really know much about any other zones. By the time I came back most people just did Ldons until they could start going to planes.

My current path with my war/clr combo has been/will be:
1-11 tutorial
11-15 Unrest: Yard Trash/Round Room
15-25 Paludal Caverns
25-30 Unrest: 2nd Floor
30-45 Tower of the Frozen Shadow(hot zone)
45-50 LGuk (Safe Hall)
50-55 Howling Stones
55-62 PoV
and so on...

Anywho, this is probably more info than you wanted but I hope it makes your decision a bit easier. For me it was more of an impulse to come back.

All the info is really helpful, you by no means gave me too much. I'm kind of confused now though. Do I need any certain expansion for any of the areas you are mentioning, because I've never heard of this Frozen Tower place.

The ones I had when I stopped were:
-Ruins of Kunark
-Scars of Velious
-Planes of Power
-LDoN
-Shadows of Luclin

GoD came out about the time I quit and that's all I really know of what happened in the time I was gone. Maybe I'm completely wrong here, but the tower place just doesn't sound familiar at all. And while we're on the subject.. which expansions should I add now, that will be useful if I come back?

If you're going to start a new account, you'll have to get all the expansions again so I'd go with EQ Platinum and the just buy the DoN expansion. If you chose to use your old account then you have the expansions necesary for the zones I've mentioned until you start going to Oow or PoP zones. DoN expansions is good for any level as you have the guild lobby where you can summon your corpse if need be. Finally, ToFS is a Velious zone.

Yeah I was just going to use my old account and start a new character on it. Thanks for all the help. I have a much better idea of what to do now. =)
