It has became a popular battle cry for some reason, but when I asked the same question I was given the below link. I guess he is an evanglist that was talking about EQ, or played EQ, or something...

I dont think that was it. There was a guy named leroy jenkins in WoW that ruined a raid by just charging in. Below is the link to what I think you are referring to.

There's a video floating around of some WoW group (raid?) where the leader is getting all set to attack some mobs and giving some long spiel about how to go about it (all via voice chatting) when one guy runs madly into the room shouting "Leroy Jenkins!" and it all dissolves into chaos. It must had been overhyped to me because I chuckled but it didn't exactly make want to start yelling it in every MMORPG I've played.
Someone (Samira?) said that the video was staged anyway which makes sense considering how often I run a video/audio feed when I'm playing Everquest just in case something comical happens.

Post from July 6th. That's where Sceltor linked that evangelist guy and I said it was staged (although, admittedly, I heard that from a guildie, so it's really just RUMINT).
It won an award for player-made movie (against some kid talking about chocolate milk and a counterstrike movie I think) at the Gphoria video game awards (yes, I watched it, but only for a few minutes, I swear!).

I haven't really a clue how the whole "Leeroy Jenkins" thing got started, but I would guess the Evangelist perhaps made some remark about video's games being evil or something.
I've seen the name used in a few different games and game genres so it's not exclusive to EQ or MMPORPG's.

In the cable TV show G4, which is about computer and video gaming. They did an episode linked here, which was about the fans naming your own awards. The Lerooy Jenkins video was awarded best performance in an MMORPG, and they played a clip from it.
I just wish everyone would stop copying it and making their toon names some variation of Leroy Jenkins. It's old news already.
Well, at least I have chicken.
