I'm lucky enough to have a friend at my job whoes played EQ and other games for many years so alot of people at my job are familier with it.
But when I explain it to a hopeful newb, I just ask them If they have seen Lord of the Rings and I explain that in the final epic battle with the big fire monster in the first movie just put yourself in the role of one of the characters and your allies are people on PC's anywhere in the world. They seem to relate to it well that way, but they never want to try it out.

funny this should come up. as i just talked to a non eq'er about EQ. the conversation sorta whent like this..

i asked if he had rememberd DnD.. he said yes but never played it..

so i said well think of eq as DnD on steriods... you can pick any sort of class / race combo like a Barbarian shaman or a dark elf enchanter... then i proceded to break down each class and each race very basically..

from my friend i got wow sounds intense.. so then i told him that i have been playing the same char for almost 5 years and started to explain the lvl/aa progression switched over to raids and groups and the chat channels all of the game mechs.

told him how at anyone time i could be in a group playing with a cleric from spain a warrior from canada a druid from japan and me here in the usa... proceded to go into the guild and how that all works..

i play with Teamspeak so i talked about that a little bit..

finally i talked about the gear and the mobs that a guild/raid/group can get and how basically its an online team type thing where you can pick who you want to play with etc..

keep in mind this guy bearly knows how to read his email..

total conversationtime about 2.5 hours... few days later i met him again and he wanted to see some of the game.. so i loaded it up and showed him what its all about.. the bazaar and the tradeskills etc then took on some "greenies:

he was like holy crap you killed that fast..i told him thats cause im uber(he dont need to know aboutthe /con system) =)

anyway after watching it for about 1hour or so he was like ahh so now i understand it... far as i know he hasnt started playing yet.. but atleast he understood some of what i was talkin about

The way i explain Everquest to people who are EQ eliterate is that Everquest is basically a giant Chat server with something to do while you are chatting with people. And just like a chat room you can become engrossed in talking to and playing with people and developing not only a freindship with them but also developing your characters

I am a 15 year old male(B-day was a few weeks ago) and I have been playing sence I was a month and a half from 12 years old. It's a mixed result when I try to explain EQ to a non player. Sometimes they know right away and others just kinda nod there head and act like they do. A few of my friends play WoW, FF11, Guild wars, and SWG and all of them try to tell me it's a better game wial I'm trying to do the same with EQ. I always ask If they have played EQ and none of them have where as I have played all of those and EQ is still the best but they still don't convert.

A friend That plays WoW is looking to start EQ and the thing that realy got him was when we were comparing the two. He sead after about a month he had his dwarf hunter to lvl 50 with some uber gear and such; to which I told him that I had been playing EQ for 3.5 years and have yet to reach lvl 65 on any of my toons. and I went to explaining my trials on various servers and went into the whole pvp system(back b4 the merge) with Race teams and everything else. then to the roleplaying and the PvE and everything like that.

Moreoften than not I end up listning to someone rambling on about their lvl 34 white mage and how if i started on FF11 they could give me some hand-me-down gear or if I started playing SWG again that they'd give me a full set of composit armor and a house in they're player city and speeder bike or some other thing like that.

Well, i didnt take the time to read the rest of the posts because in my case i have no problem explaining the game to a non-player , provided they have seen any of the highlander movies or the tv show . I told a few of my friends at work that wanted to know what the game was about simply, " its a mix between Highlander and Dungeons and Dragons" ... u kill things -u gain power. The more u kill the more powerful u get.Course it gets harder to kill (just like in highlander) Shoot alot of the mathematical ratios, scenarios, spell names, even some names for cities/zones etc are takin from Dungeons and dragons based movies, shows, and books. Now, should u feel the need to go more in depth with the folks where u work ur on ur own , I tried to go into more detail with my friends and associates at work and i may as well have been tryna teach a Squirrel how to do a flying back spin thrust kick - blindfolded...GL .

I imagine that I am in a very small minority. My wife got me to play this game by giving it to me for my birthday and saying that since it was a present I had to try it. I had nothing against games - I was playing Diablo II at the time - I don't type very well, and have to look at the keyboard to type anything. I don't hunt and peck - just don't really know where the keys are.

I'm a 67 year old dentist who has been playing now for a little over 3 years - be 4 years in August. And you think you folks get funny looks, you should see my patients when they learn that the guy fixing thier teeth plays an On Line video game. I make no attempt at all to explain the game to them. I just tell them that I got tired of all the violence and *** on television and decided to do something that would keep my mind sharp enough to be able to continue practicing for another 10 years.

They seem to understand the "keep the mind sharp" bit more than any attempt to explain the game. What is interesting is, that I have gotten several new families because the teen-age kids sorry teens - your kids to me} in existing families tell thier buddies that I play EQ, and the friends ask thier parents to change dentists.

My wife and I play together allmost every night for a couple of hours - about the same amount of time that we used to spend vegetating in front of the boob tube - and maybe another 6 hours on Saturday and on Sunday if we're not off on a trip somewhere.
My sis-in-law usually joins in on our fun along with a legally blind guy that we met in the game about 21/2 years ago. He had never been able to progress above about level 12 because he couldn't read the chat and play the game at the same time. With the understanding of my wife and her sister (and a lot of patience) he began to learn how to interact in the game and now plays a really awesome game. He has to have his face about 3 inches from the monitor to play - but if you saw him in action, you would never gues that this guy was practically blind. I mention this because I personally think there is a lot more good that comes from this game than there is bad - it gives people who otherwise would have no life due to thier situation in life a way to build self esteem and to interact with peopl on an even level.

Can you guess that the only thing that will stop this geraiatic gamer from stopping EQ will be a 6 foot hole, or Sony killing the game - whic I can't see happening anythime soon.

All of these posts are terrific! I am amazed and very proud of the cameraderie EQ inspires. The game brings together people of many different cultures and ages for good old-fashioned fun. I often hear at work "how can you call those people you've never even seen in person, your friends?" It's easy!!! I have more EQ friends that I care about and trust than I do RL life ones. Why? because they are real people with lives and emotions behind the characters they play. That is what hooked me. I can go home from work each night and look forward to catching up with friends from all over the country and world. I realized after asking my initial question that I don't have to explain EQ. All I need to say is "that's where my friends are, so I gotta go raid now, bye bye".

I have asked people if they are familiar with the old D&D games, and generally get the "yes" answer. I go on to ask 'you are familiar with chatrooms?' and get the same answer. EQ is an enormous chatroom with awesome graphics. I tell them EQ is a glrofied version of D&D gaming but it is a bit more intense. Have to do more thinking. They get the basic concept and I don't get too many glazed stares. The game is more than just a game. It is my stress relief at the end of the day. I get to talk to people I wouldn't have met any other way. I have formed real friendships with a few people and have gone so far to meet face to face with them. I would rather play EQ than go bar hopping. Saves me money from alcohol and gas. And I am home when my kids need me (40 year old mom here). And I can walk away and do something away from EQ, and come back to it later and not be having withdrawals. I have met a few people in unlikely places outside EQ that have either played it or still do, and it's kind of fun to rehash with them. And, it too, has helped me improve my typing skills. lol

I have been playing since 2000 and let me tell ya I have seen the funniest faces tryin to explain EQ. I am 42yr and one of my children is 24 yr old andhas 2 kids. Both grandbabies (ages 6 and 3) like EQ. They think gettin killed is the best. Well my daughter finally asked me what it is and why i play. Who me, you think I need another (you lost it) look. Oh no, better yet, I let the grandbabies tell her..."Mom, this is great lookie what I look like (ogre, what a kid). Aint I cute. Besides we are teachin Jenna (she is the 3 yr old) to read so she knows when she gets hit." I couldn't have done better. The look on my daughters face was priceless to say the least, as was mine if ya ask her.

Good question!

I get various reactions. Some seem concerned that I am 'addicted' and think I need help (hehe perhaps they are right there)

I also tried to explain it to people from work and they simply think I'm slightly mad. Probably true as well.

Even worse I have recently created an Everquest Ranger website, so this obviously confirms their suspicions!

I'm a 39 y/o male freshly retired from the military and working now as a Military Analyst. I have been involved in fantasy role-playing (AD&D, RoleMaster, etc..) since I was 12 (and no! I haven't grown up yet!) and have been playing everquest for over 3 years.

When someone discovers I play I get this vacant expression on their face and many stupid questions. I just say, "You know, we deal in reality all day! It's really fun to lose yourself in something fantasic and magical. Something that requires you to think out of the normal scope of exsistance and doesn't really require a great deal of effort. Besides! I can kill all kinds of stuff and not go to for jail! That by itself has got to be worth something!".

I have added probably a couple of dozen players to Everquest with just that line!

Remember! Growing old is a part of nature. Growning up is optional!

That is just assume EagleFlight! I'm still trying to get my wife to play; however, my son (16) and I do. We occasionally can get the daughter (12) who now has a 23 lvl Beastlord. I'm still working on the wife and won't give up! I think I'll get her to come around to my way of thinking if I can just get her to make a character!.

I can't get my family members to play it, no matter how hard i try :).
I've been playing eq for 4 years now and i must say it's quite the entertaining past time. It's not expensive as others pointed out ( compared to going out each weekend and spending 70 or 80 Euros), and it allows me to get in touch with people all over the world.
Have a lot of friends over in the US thanks to EQ and visited a few of them in real and i can't wait to go back over there :)
I got a few of my friends to at least try the a game, they played and liked it ... but left the second WoW came in the stores.

I like WoW a lot myself, but i can't see myself playing it as it doesnt stress the need for grouping an cooperating the way everquest does.

Then I found a solution. One day, out of the blue.. I started her an account, and told her how I'd hate for the money to go to waste. She started researching the classes and races, and I showed her Allakhazam and the spell lists, items and stuff. Now, I have a awesome and lovely 66 High Elf Cleric who fights beside my Vah Shir warrior, and on days that I don't feel like playing.. I walk in to find her 2boxing me! :)

Success!!
Sad to say but i think EQ is at least 25% of the reason my wife and i got married, nothing like sharing a hugely addictive hobby....

i heard said once that about 10% of EQ players are female and a would say most of them play because of their partner introducing them.

I need to link this thread to some friends, lol.

My husband and I both play. We bought the first account to try the game out, and it wasn't long after that we bought a second computer and account (to stop the arguing over whose turn to play). Now, we have 4 computers, 4 accounts (my husband 3 boxes, it was the only way to keep his interest, one boxing was too slow). Our friends get kind of annoyed when they call and ask what we're up to and get "playing EQ" as the response. We've tried explaining:

*EQ is cost effective entertainment
*EQ is interactive, unlike television
*What makes EQ addictive is the people we play with
(my husband's friend should get this, he plays Planetside)
*It's kind of cool having friends all over the world

Explaining what EQ is about is a bit harder (did you know there are people out there NOT INTERESTED in the LotR series?)Smiley: jawdrop It's easier (somewhat) to just show them. Even then ... Smiley: oyvey

I made a powerpoint slideshow using screenshots I edited in paint and resized/cropped and titled in powerpoint.

#1 this is my character in everquest
#2 this is my character killing a wooly mammoth
#3 this is the birds eye view of the dead mammoth
#4 this is me posing next to the mammoth
#5 this is the great library
#6 this is where everyone hangs out near the library
#7 this is the oldest library cardholder (skeleton hanging)
#8 this is a closeup sideview of the skeleton (best side)
#9 this is my raid party posing for pictures at the entrance to the plane of fear
#10 this is dracolich an undead dragon we are trying to kill it
#11 this is dracolich dancing around with flames under its feet from an arial view
#12 this is dracolich dead and me posing for a picture
#13 this is the moon luclin in a city called sanctus seru
#14 this is the planet norrath as seen from sanctus seru sky (looking up at norrath)

I took time to answer questions and explain the pictures better. It seemed they were all mezmerized til I was asking for someone to speak. I did my best to show the 3d nature of the toons and stuff.

DnD has a board game? The talkin way would be called pen and paper (PnP), or more commonly, tabletop. I started DnD about 12 years ago, still play weekly when I can drag myself away from EQ =)

My husband started playing, he told me he'd only play 2 hours a day. Then he started pausing his 2 hour timer for smoke breaks. Then he started saying "just gotta kill one more <whatever>". Then he said "I need a new video card." I almost threw out his computer...

Well, Qwest had a special offer for new DSL subscribers when I got around to getting it in my name. Everquest classic and one free month. Took about 5 minutes for me to be hooked, I've never looked back lol

Luckily for me I didn't have to explain it to my family, my 3 brothers already had =)

I work at an inpatient hospital pharmacy, in the middle of small town Kansas. There just isn't a lot of "new-world" things going down here. And I have two hobbies at this phase of my life: Sports and Everquest. And since it is baseball season and unless you live on the East Coast baseball sucks, I play a LOT of Everquest.

So when my coworkers ask me what I am doing all the time staying up late I tell them about the game. Most are truly in awe, they can't imagine a game of this magnitude. Which is to be expected since most don't play any computer games at all.

But if you really want to get them wired up, tell them about your very first crazy trains in Crushbone. **** 'em right up.

51 year old grandma here who's 31 year old daughter got her hooked, so I in turn got the youngest 24 year old daughter to play (she went over to DaoC with her hubby tho, the TRAITOR!).

If you think it's hard to explain to younger folks, you should try the old timers LOL. K it'sa game, like for fun, passes time, kinda like DnD mixed with play station and chat rooms played over the internet with folks from all over the world, no DnD isn't satanic it's another game played with dice, geesch, no it's not like gambling, grrrrr, oh just forget it. No, I'm not too old for "those" kinda games, bite me *****

On the good side I've met quite a few other old timers like myself and bunches of good friends all ages. Good peeps are good peeps, don't think age really matters...and for those other peeps, we have the /ingore function. Muahaha! :-)

OMG lol... THAT'S IT!!! lmao

one thing about me... I'm 29, when I had first seen everquest I wanted to play it... but never had the money for it. A couple years went by and I finaly got the program and started playing... I was hooked as i knew i would be (BIG rpg fan here). My wife would watch me sometimes while she played other games, (our pcs' are right next to each others) and I would occasionaly say something like AAAAAHH I'M BEING KILLED.. or... that stinking KS'er... she would just go back to her game and keep playing.

I finally talked her into trying it, It wasn't quite like what she would have liked and stopped playing... again she tries again and starts to like it.
before she started to play I had a problem lvl'ing my chars.. my main char a woodelf druid never EVER made it past lvl 12 lol.

I used my druid to help lvl her beastlord until we could group, next thing you know we are both lvl 55... by this point we had to try other chars.. we did.. ALL of them lol. we couldn't stop doing alts. our mains are now lvl 59 but we lvl really fast now on our alts. BUT!! it is still quite fun trying to explain ALL of this to people who ask.. what game are you playing.

How about a female 61 year old retired English/technology teacher who's the GL of a top raiding guild and who's been playing since '99?

*No one* in my social circle can grok MMORPGs; most of them can barely use email!

Well, I take that back. My closest female friend I met via EQ. She and her husband were EQers in my guild (she started playing b/c women were hitting on him <giggle>) and we finally got together IRL... and now I drive 9 hrs every month or two to spend a week with them.

Explain? I talk about the opportunity to be a leader, an administrator, a strategist, to work collaboratively with colleagues to delineate and attain goals, to socialize with people from everywhere without any of the usual RL barriers.

Then I give examples, not game strategies but human interactions, like my friend, like the fellow in my guild who was crippled in a motorcycle accident but can run like the wind as a ranger in EQ, like a single mother with a profoundly retarded child who can't get out much IRL but who can go anywhere in EQ, like an officer in my guild whom I've never met IRL but whom I knew so well that I served as a reference for a job: I talked about her people skills, strategizing skills, responsibility and timeliness in dealing with tasks, etc etc. And she got the job!

But mostly yeah, their eyes glaze over. My 27 year old daugher has always been an FPS or singleperson roleplay gamer who loathes EQ. Her latest b/f however used to play and periodically is tempted to start up again. So she's going to have to learn :)
