While in the bazaar this weekend, I saw an ooc:

"Where should a 56 necro go for plat?"

Someone responded "Rathe Mountains."

The necro had the following question:

"OK. What should I hunt there?"

At this point, I laughed and snickered, and did an OOC myself of "Ebay."

Is there ANYONE who has played the game to 56th level and NOT known what to hunt in Rathe?

I guess, theoretically, if you take the fast track of leveling, you **COULD** bypass the zone entirely, but, c'mon...this is stuff I knew when I was in my twenties.

(personal opionion - at that level, there are better places to farm, anyway...)

Anyway, I was curious:

What stuff, that is basically considered to be "common knowledge" did you **NOT** learn, until it was too late?

My personal latest "man, I shoulda KNOWN that" occured in FV. I needed to head to the elven outpost to get a spell from the vendor safely tucked behind the guards.

Those guards don't like wolf form...

I heard a lvl55 necros asking where is the best place to farm bone chips. You should have seen the shouts and oocs of peeps. They thrashed him left and right. Was quite funny.

To be fair, though there are ebayers, and I am not one, but I have to study my maps to get almost anywhere. I don't think I could get to most places I haven't been for a while from memory, (unless it has a portal I pass all the time, but the name on the portals seldom match where they take you, which I always thought was weird). I'd probably end up in the Karanas saying how the hell did I get here?

It's sad but true in real life as well, unless I have been somewhere a whole lot, I have to pull out the maps (ty Mapquest), being there once or twice or 3 times is not enough to embed itself in my brain.

As I have said before, I avoid dungeons, because often, to my RL eyes I can't tell much difference between walls and floors and drop-offs too well and (except for LDoN's) the maps wrap and wind and are pretty useless, and you can't autofollow either, and they are dark even with adjustments to monitor and buffs.

Oh, BTW, I am finally level 65 (I win the prize for OMG it took her forever, can you believe it).

What is "common knowledge" isn't always as common as some think. I personally think the OP was a bit harsh on the necro who didn't know anything about Rathe. With as many zones as there are out there, what was once THE track to level no longer is. There are MANY diffent options out there. I personally have NEVER hunted in the Rathe mountains and I am lvl 70. Yes, I know what to hunt there, but I am a regular reader of the boards. All it would take is a person who came to the came later on, say post POP, and not be a common searcher of the boards. Or even then, Rathe is an old zone, so the necro may never have thought to go there, as most old zones are not highly populated.
Same thing with the bone chips question. The necro may have known a few good places to get chips, but had never bothered to figure out what was the BEST place to and just wanted opinions.
Now if the necro had asked "How do I summon my pet?" then EBAY would have been something to call out.

With all of the zones, and revamps, I find myself doing this constantly. I have the Atlas book, but it's a bit out of date, and the maps really aren't that great to begin with, but I use it all the time just to figure out zone connections and so forth.

It's a big game, and it's easy to get lost.

I was grouping with a lv 18 newbie rogue that I thought was twinked when a hottie rides by on a horse the guy ask her where do you by a horse. She responds in the Bazaar but they are 10 - 20k pp. He says the $$ no problem but How do I get to the bazaar. jaw drop. I /tell him that he probobly should broadcast that he bought a bunch of plat. He starts to dig a deeper hole by trying to explain that he has a lvl 55 cleric and has earned his money. I had the chance but I did'nt have the ability to stop there. /tell oh did you do a transfer in the Bank of the Bazaar. :P. at this point he calls me an arsse and we deside to part ways

Remember there are also alot of "hand me down accounts" which have newbs running already advanced toons on accounts that a now retired realative or friend had given away.
Do not assume that it was ebay bought. Given the number of higher level newbs out there, EBay does not account for them. Hand me down accounts does.

I can verify Martant knows nil! Smiley: wink

We had a level 50sh SK camp steal us in DL looking for bone chips. I handed them a stack of bone chips and said go to Kurns.

They say: Kurns? huh never knew...

How could an SK or Necro NOT know about Kurns?

I can see it. Old-school necros used to hang out in the Erudite newbie yard, buying up bone chips from the level 2-4 Erudites for generous amounts (10s a stack! sign me up). Sometimes you'd see them auctioning in EC, as well.

After Kunark came out it was easy to farm them in LOIO and other areas. Kurns was pretty far out of the way.

I didn't figure out until about a month ago..... Smiley: oyvey that Intellectual Superiority still helps with those fizzes. I cast it on myself by accident and it did cut down on the fizzes a bit. Silly SoE for making us have to use AA points to stop fizzing these days.

Well, I just recently came back to EQ and there are many things that have changed. I left shortly after RoK, micraculously (spelling?)my account still existed and I got my 51 or 52 Pal (cant remember) out of storage. The first thing I noticed was there were no auctions in GFay so what was I to do? I ask in ooc.....:) Someone says go to the bazaar, so I said what is the bazaar? hehe needless to say many people in GFay had a laugh at my expense and yes I was called an Ebay'er and other such things.... whatever. The point is even the experienced players coming back after years of abscence have a large learning curve. Just my 2 cp.

Unless he's returning from pre-LDoN days, I agree that's pretty, well, bizarre.

To me, Ebay peeps are just as bad as noobs that PWR lvl there way up to 50-60 range in a short amount of time ...say 5-6 weeks. Let me clarify what I mean before I get flamed.

Ebay and Pwr lvl noobs are both ignorant of many zones/ classes due to the small amount of time they have played. Take me for example, I am a 5 year vet that has played every class and I think I know them very well and what purpose each serves when grouped/ raiding or just solo'n. I, on the other hand, have never had a lvl 60 toon. So I am ignorant in the ways of AA's.

I too have to agree that I knew about Raathe Mnts early in my travels but we have to ask ourselves if we are being overly critical of players when we don't know what path they have taken to lvl up....albeit ebay, pwr lvl.... or really getting into their class and learning the ins and outs?

I know almost everything I need to play the game solo...or grouping and also know where to get information on various sites to answer the ones I have....so I think it's a learning curve for all noobs......ebayers or not.

Kinda rambled a little there sorry hehe...but think about your own knowledge of the game as there are VERY few that know 90% to all of the game off the top of their heads.

hmm, now let's see. I've bought quite a few toons, including my first highend one (the second highend one was given to me.)

I'm not sure anyone on these boards would call me ignorant...

Howdy, I was a regular EQ player back in the good days. The furthest expansion then was Ruins of Kunark. I had left off with a level 27 Dwarf Paladin. Well, I continued paying the bill because I knew eventually I'd come back, but RL kept me afk for a good while, and I half way forgot I was still being charged for the account, though I saw it time to time on my statement, mostly it didn't register from the 2 years regular playing. Remember when the "bazaar" was East Commons and Greater Faydark, lol, and taking the ship anytime you wanted to get from one continent to another? And then waiting some 15 mins and MISSING the ship because you got caught up in your favorite show on the TV?? LMAO. Anyways, I left for some years and came back just before Dragons came out. On my 27 pally the first thing I noticed was the crickets chirping in GFay, and Unrest literally a ghost town, and these crazy little stones with books on them. Stopped a level 4 froglok (another astonishment, what the hell are these things!!?). Had to ask all kinds of "obvious" questions. Point is that not everyone is an ebay ranger, just circumstances are strange...... Imagine every change from Ruins to Dragons, and that is the questions in my head.

HOWEVER I do agree that Ebay bought characters are dumb, but if you have no experience with the game it's even more retarded. If your gonna spend money on that, take a few hours, make a new character, and do the tutorial. AND, read the message boards. If your gonna cheat at least be semi-intelligent about it!

It is scary how much things change in a short time. I'm nervous about coming back because I don't have DoN and have no idea about all the changes it brought. I barely managed to get my old bazaar mules moved to the new bazaar and still don't know if I put them in the right place.

I was already behind when I stopped as I'd not much idea about GoD or OoW zones except to port in raid something and rez afterwards. I think I did one exp group in OoW (Assuming MPG is OoW?)

So if I tried to play nowadays I'd be pretty lost in the new zones everyone knows. I could tell you about the faces in EK gorge or how to get into The Hole but no doubt someone would be throwing "EBay" at me for not knowing how to find RCoD or having any clue about what these crystal things are for.

In some ways I think things changed too fast but probably for people playing it has been a smooth progression and it's my fault for being out of circuit

Don't feel bad about not knowing where rcod is... I don't know where it is either. I haven't played in almost any GoD or Oow zone. Not that I have the gear to do it but I'd probably be called an ebayer if I ever had to get to it. Heck I grouped in NC for the first time this weekend. Had toask the guild for directions.... felt like such a noob!

People wonder why EQ doesn't have more people playing... Maybe it is because if someone asks a stupid/silly question everyone calls them noobs of e-bay...

I left before LDoN came out and returned after DoN... I am really enjoying the game, but I had a lot of newbie/stupid questions to ask... I got called names a few times and then started each tell I did with "I just got back to the game from a two year break, I forgot a few things and would like to ask a quetion..." Then people really were nice...

My point is, if we want EQ to continue to grow we all need to stop being rude..
