Old player contemplating return to NorrathFollow

Greetings everyone.

I am an old EQ player that played for about 4 years as a necromancer before moving on to other things. It was difficult for me to do, but some things gotta be done, ya know?

I tried EQ2 for a bit, but found it to be boring, repetitive, and bland among other things. It just doesn't have the appeal and fun that EQ offered to me.

So I've been wondering whether or not I should come back to EQ and start over in the land of Norrath. This game has been some of the most fun I have ever had, but I don't want to come back if there is anything that would make the experience worse than what I was used to.

If I do come back, I plan on installing the expansions I have (up to LDoN) but not moving onto other expansions until I've experienced as much as I can in the one before it. Last time I played I rushed to see as much as I could at once, experience everything as fast as I could, and I suffered. I even succumbed to the evils of the Plane of Knowledge, which I realized much later was a big mistake. I made things too easy, relied on others too much, and never got around to exploring places that I should have looked into. This time I want to take my time, explore, and delve into the history and experience of the game.

So, do you guys think, for an old gnome necro, that coming back would be ok depsite all the new content, high level players, etc? And a server suggestion would be nice as well, I dislike low population servers. I'd like to be in a sever with plenty of people all over the zones. Camping isn't an issue for me, I had a special ability to weasel my way into groups, even full ones. :)

Thanks for your opinions, and I hope to see ya in-game sometime if I can!

No matter how many are on the servers, there is just not enough population of newbs to keep all the lower level zones busy, and lots of lower levels are alts. For example there are a very limited number of zones to find low level groups in (under 20). I think Povar has the highest level of true newbs.

Still EQ is a great game IMO. Server merges brought back the population to an acceptably high level.

There is a great tutorial now, that will allow you to see some of the new stuff. Don't leave it without a weapon upgrade, a full set of armor, a nice stat charm, and enough stacks of rat steaks to carry you through a while.

It's hard to know what you consider "worse" than it used to be, so I can't comment. Every time someone sees an improvement (or change) like PoK or the bazaar, another says it will ruin EQ. I like most of the changes, myself.

Thanks for your post.

I should have made clear before that I'm more of a solo player than a group player, but I like grouping when soloing gets boring after a while. I just don't want the server to be mostly based in the expremely high level zones or all clustered in the same places.

I like the idea of server merges, I heard about it a while back and it sounded like an excellent idea to get the community together.

And by worse, I mean things that spread the world thin and get players more interested in gaining power and wealth than exploring the whole game and getting the intended experience out of it. IMO, the PoK made the game too simple for new people, but a godsend for the higher level players. I liked it when I got to 40, but before that I found it too easy to go wherever I wanted, removing me from the experience I was supposed to have where I started out.

95% of the population plays in 1% of the zones. I am not being sarcastic, I am a happy Everquest player but this is the reality.

This is Everquest. Power and Wealth are foundations. PoK made exploring unecessary. The guild Hall teleport system made PoK unecessary. Oh, and corpse runs do not exist anymore. I personally love it. I take my Monk and Shaman into the most dangerous, one way ticket hell holes and when I die, just use the Corpse Summoner. If you don't die, you can just log out for 6 hours and return to your home city. I am exaggerating of course about PoK being unecessary but if the PoK system was disappointing to you, the Guild Hall features will disappoint further.

To be honest though. You could choose to play the game without ever zoning to the Plane of Knowledge. As tempting as it is, just don't do it. I would be happy to explain any routes you need to take. I wonder how many people realize you can actually walk from Freeport to Qeynos.

I recently made a new puppet on the Stromm server, just to ***** around a bit, and there seems to be a lot more newbs running around (still). It is listed as a newby server, and still seems to have a healthy population. In the tutorial, for instance, there were 15-20 people everytime I logged in this weekend. Compare that to a max of 5 on Tunare when I use to play there.

I mentioned this in another thread, but coming from EQ2, you're in for a shock when you realize how much better the graphics are than EQ. I almost decided not to bother, but after a few hours I adjusted ;P

Welcome Back

I wouldn't recommend starting over, particularly as a level one character. You're just going to end up soloing 95% of the time until you get into your 60's, or waiting ages for groups. Sure there's a chance you could make some friends and group with them, but it's not like how it used to be. EQ has turned into a power game, where most of the people who play it are concerned about getting levels and/or gear as fast as possible, and that is all.

I've played EQ for about 5 years now, and it pains me to say it, but the game has by and large lost the orginal spirit of compaionship and adventure which made it fun.. everyone on who plays pretty much knows exactly what they're doing, thanks to all the maps, the tutorial, power leveling, and twinking, to the point where you just don't see that wide of a variety of players... and people are also a lot less likely to take "inferior" players or classes than they used to be, because Sony has made the upper content much more difficult than it used to be at about PoP era, even for casual players.

If they wanted to make raiding more difficult for people who prefer raiding, I say more power to 'em.. but to make like a new paladin or something nowadays in EQ is an impossiblity.

Things I miss in EQ (that aren't coming back)
EC tunnels, and making trips to go sell things - real auctions - a seller's market
Everyone at the Freeport bank
Groups to kill orcs
People selling banded and / or crap jewelcrafting junk in lfay
Naked Halfings
People giving a naked newbie free gear. This used to happen a LOT more than it does now.
Getting lost.
The excitement of after a ding taking a boat trip back to get new spells.
Falling off the boat and getting stuck in the water. yeah, it was annoying, but in retrospect it made the game FUN
Losing my guild tunic.

Now the game is a lot LESS fun, because they've taken all the mystery out of it... why they don't think a game can be fun *and* difficult slash annoying is beyond me...
