Hello everyone!

I am FINALLY able to return to EQ, but the game looks sooooo different now, and soooo much LARGER (SWEET!).

I had to quit back when luclin came out, like 2 days after the release.

I don't know what to do. :P

I don't know what I need to buy now days. Should I just get the platinum edition? I can pick it up for 19.99 on my way home today. What else do I need to get started? I've read about a new tutorial that helps new players where you can get up to lvl 7 fairly quickly without haveing to kill fire beetle after fire beetle.... UGH.

Is eq dying out? I read about all these server merges, people leaving for eq2 and WoW, and it appears so. But then sony launches DoN (Thats one abbreviation I know, probably because it's my RL name lol...) and it appears they intend to keep eq going.

Which sounds great to me, a few less people means I can actually do some of the quests I've always wanted to do but never got a chance. At least in theory.

What about a good character to restart with? I'm having trouble deciding. I'm thinking I need to restart with a soloing character to refamiliarize with the game. I have experience with a druid made it to lvl 49 before I got burnt out on him, a necromancer, a Magician and a Shaman.

I would probably choose the necro if it weren't so tough being koS everywhere ya go. :P

Now I've heard the beastlord has become a soloist on par with druids and necros, is there any truth to that? If there is, I may go that route because I can start in my favorite city (halas) as my favorite race BARBARIAN!

A long time ago I started a thread somewhere asking what the best class was to solo frost giants. I think frost giants, maybe they were ice giants. The ones in everfrost at the fort entrance to perma. :P

I know it's not a druid, I solo'd them and it took forever kiting them all over EF lol... Thats why I started a mage and necro, but never got them high enough to kill the giants before I had to leave. Can a beastlord solo these guys efficiently?

I guess what I need is your opinions on a good soloist to return to the game with, a good server to start out on and just general advice on returning to the game.

I'm glad to see this site isstill active, alot of the old eq sites are dying out it looks like to me.

Well anyway, I'll be buying the game in a few hrs and if the install goes good (*dreads messing with the whole latest driver scenarioall over again*) will be playing by early afternoon.

So help me out with your hard earned wisdom eh??

thanks guys.

Platinum is the best, you don't need the extra expansions for now. The tutorial only lasted me till level 5, but it gave a nice charm item(a new equipment slot they added). There are a lot less people playing but I don't think the game is dying. A soloing character probably would be the right choice, as for a necromancer's faction, it doesn't matter too much anymore. There are books located around a lot of cities that take you to the plane of knowledge, which has stones for a ton of places for you to teleport to. With the new expansions..almost any class can solo most of the luclin and under stuff that was once thought impossible, so don't worry about ice giants. A lot of people like morden rasp as a server, never tried it myself though. Good luck with your return to everquest.

Well with the addition of Planes of Power, and especialy the Plane of Knowledge factions are not that big of a deal. Any level 1 on up can go to PoK and from there just about anywhere else.

I'd advise buying EQ Platinum, this will get you every expansion upto and including Gates of Discord. Leaving you with only Omens of War and Dragons of Norrath left to purchase.

A Necro would be a good choice for a returning player. Lots of soloability and very group friendly now a days. Be sure to go thru the entire Tutorial, you get a very nice Charm slot item and can easily get to 5th level. Not to mention the tutorial will walk you thru most if not all of the changes since you left.

Something you didn't ask about, but I feel compelled to infor you about is server selection. Since some servers are merging I strongly advise choosing a preferred server such as Morden Rasp or Maylin Saypere (I know spelled the last one wrong) or if your into PvP the Zek server. These servers all have a good selection of low to high level players. The older servers are pretty topped out with high level players (70 is the new highest level attainable) and few to none low level players.

Which ever descion you make good luck and welcome back!

Ok. I will be leaving this rat hole I am at in about an hour and will get the plat edition on my way home.

Is there any sight that has a good overview of all these expansions? The planes of powers sounds like it changed the game quite a bit just from what the two of you have said.

So has the wizards and the druids ability to teleport also been in a sense nerfed with the pok? It sounds like anyone can tele now days. Sorry if I used the wrong word, can't remember what the spells were called so I'll just say teleport for now lol...

And if factions don't really matter anymore, I'll defianately go with a necro.

Although I've heard other races can be new classes now days, and that frogloks are hopping about as well. Like rumors that Dark elves can be beastlords through one of the expansions, and halflings can be rangers now.

All of that is new news to me. I need a nice condensed version of what all the expansions did.

Anyway, I'm gonna get ready to leave. Thanks guys for the advice.

Dark elves can't be beastlords, but halflings can be rangers. I think the only other change was that gnomes can be shadowknights and paladins.

Another change was the Frogloks kicked the Trolls out Grobb, renamed it Gukta and now the Trolls are living in Neriak.

Definately do not skip the tutorial, it's invaluable. You might try going to the site suggested by Ladihawk and reading the manual. I dunno how informative you'll find it but it will at least give you an idea of what questions to ask.

The others are right. EQ Platinum is plenty for a long time to come. Gates of Discord, Omens of War and now Dragons of Norrath are all aimed at high end players.

I only have a 58 shammy and a 35 druid but both of them have gotten there solo. I think the druid solos much better than the shammy, at least for his level. I have played exclusively on Stromm so can't advise you on the other servers. Stromm at least has a steady influx of new and low level players.

This is a very good forum, there are some very knowlegable people posting here. Once you settle on a class don't overlook the class forums either.

WB to EQ. It isn't dying, quite the contrary. I think you'll like what you find. Good luck and Good Hunting!

Welcome Back!

Yes, get Platinum set.
Yes, do the tutorial... it will get you to level 5, it will get you much better newby clothes and weapon than you ever would have had, and a very nice charm item. The tutorial is the normal place you will go when you start a new toon. Frankly after the first time, the tutorial is boring.. but takes less time than normal 1-5 levelling.

There's still life in the old EQdog, so get in and enjoy all you have missed. You do need a well populated server, Morden Rasp, Brell and Stromm are three options.

The shaman is a great call... barb or froggy. SoW at lvl 9, buffs for all, reasonable damage output for early levels (I still solo at 65) and of course, slows and buffs when you do want to group. Bye the way, everyone ELSE is sitting in PoK howling for buffs.. you just buff YOURSELF and get on with the job : )

Beastlord is a fun choice too.

ANY class can solo the Ice Giants. The question is.. at what level. I belive I did 'em at 36 with my Shaman, but that was far from efficient. Beasty will do em too, not sure of the level though.

Many threads here on various aspect of the game... but post your questions as they arise.

BTW I guess you want to kill Ice Giants for cash... you'll be doing Hill Giants in Rathe Mountains well before you solo Ice Giants.

Ty, that was a decent help.

Well I started up with a beastlord, simply because of race and starting town, I've missed Halas! Completed the tutorial, at least until my skull charm was fully charged then I had to take a break and check out the town (Halas!). Things are pretty much as I left them other than Beastlord trainers back in the old empty huts.

I have one techie question if anyone can help me. I followed the instructions word for word on latest driver installation. Uninstalled the current one first, rebooted and then downloaded and installed the latest version. All went well xcept when I am at my desktop and browsing the internet everything is HUGE. All my desktop icons and everything are nearly twice the size they were before.

I dealt with this once before, but it's been so long since I've had pc access I forget how to correct the problem. Can anyone advise me there please?

Thanks everyone for your advice. I'm going to browse the class forums and other threads to help me pick a character to run as my main. I'm still having trouble deciding. So many appeal to me. Thats a good thing I suppose!

When you installed your new drivers, your video settings probably reverted back to 800X600 resolution. You'll need to get into your display settings (from the control panel) to fix it to a resolution you like better. Welcome back. You shoulda rolled a bard. Smiley: wink

Heya Jiggi, thanks got it fixed. Forgot how easy it actually was. After doing the EQ install tho I was wore out and didn't have the energy to mess with it lol...

I made a bard once before when that deity based pvp server first came out, named cyrus. Took him to mid 20's and had a blast. I've always meant to make another, perhaps I will as my next toon. But for now I have settled on a Barbarian Shaman!

I've made two of these guys before and always wanted to get to 34th for their pet, I love pet classes. But something always came up and I never made it. This time I'm gonna!

I'm lvl 4 now doing the armor quests in gloomingdeep. Gonna hit 5 tonight and head out to EF and get killed a few times. heh :P
