Personally I think the best thing they could do is to start combining servers.

The only way the game will survive is if player interaction levels remain at a high level. I think many people are already noticing the drop-off in this area at an increasing rate. Even before WoW and EQ2 this type of decline was being noticed. Just not to the same degree.

If people log on and find nobody to play with, they will slowly start to lose interest and move on themselves. Larger player bases by combining servers could help contain this type of situation. Of course some high-end guilds that dominate a server may not like it, but it's best for the game.

In the past this wasn't an issue due to this being the only big show in town for the most part.

With WoW and EQ2, though, there really is no reason for new players to the MMORPG world to chose Classic EQ. So all we're left with is the old players.

Besides, it seems to me that less servers would be less maintance costs to SOE. You'd think they would be all over keeping more money for themselves.

i have a 59 mage that i play most of the time on Druzzil Ro. in the past 6 months i have quit eq 4 times for a week or so and came back and gained massive lvls. i came back to eq recently after Omens came out and had severe trouble finding groups. it took me form the time omens came out until now to get from 55 to 59, which took me a week the first time i went through those lvls. the population on D Ro has greatly decreased. the only people i see lfg in the lfg tool are rangers or druids... in other words, classes that can go solo many places for decent xp. it has gotten so bad that i spend 3-4 hours lfg and just log. only groups i have been able to get are with guildies, the few that are on, and with my friends alts, since they have all passed me up. one of the zones i see a lot of people in is Noble's Causeway, which is my lvl range, yet i have had people tell me to get out until i am 65+ when /oocing lfg. but that is a complaint for another thread. so basically i am sad about the decrease in population and aggrivation in trying to get a group. however i am sure it will end in about a month or so once people get fed up with the difficulty in eq2, and the ability to not be able to see at night. hopefully i will be correct and i will get to lvl my gimp mage again.

In terms of personal interaction, Everquest is still alive and kicking. I have never been without 'friends' when I logged on since level 6. If anything I have too many conversations going at once - and have to tell them all when I need to get busy with a group or fight. It takes me at least 5 minutes to say goodnight to my guild and friends, unless of course I'm the last one to log. There are some nights I just log on to talk & relax. Oh, groups of 5 or 6 (level 40) are rare, except in DSP, and comprised of alts. But they can happen.

On Stromm there are a few "older" guilds that have either decided to fold or stop activly raiding. I think that what we will be seeing is alot of guild merging. new guild attempts and the like. Really server merging is the future of EQ. Why not then we all get to learn of new cheaters, wonderful rezzers, guilds that cockblock content, infamous trainers etc.

I was on Drinal Fri, Sat & Sun this weekend (actually had a weekend off). Everytime I wanted to find a group I did, KEI/Kazad/Virtue plenteous, a couple zones we had to leave cause they were camped. had usual KS'rs in Rathe Mountains, and at least 6 guildies on all weekend (except Sun). I choose to solo RM for awhile (saving money for particular item) & got multiple tells asking if I wanted to group.

Several friends of mine have tried EQ2 and half are already back to EQ.

So I'm not worried

Interesting posts - I played a lot Weds nite and Thur AM before company arrived on Drinal. As before, most of the guild was up and lots of action.

We ended up in GoD at the beach (which I hadn't been to since it came out) for some exp as usual spots were camped, and ended up staying there most of the time as our mains were high enough to get steady exp in Natmibi and be challenged. I was surprised at the number of players in this zone, given that it was one of my least favorite (due to my level probably).

As an indication of activity in POK, a 60 chanter in our guild was selling Kei bufs in POK Weds nite and made over 7K plat in a couple hours. All in all, my 62 chanter is happy with plenty left to do (though I wonder about grouping with my lower alts).

I think that your server selection has the greatest impact on your experience.

When I started EQ a year ago, I have picked Xegony. That may have been a mistake,
since I've spent a lot of the time alone in cities and newbie zones, with nobody
to share my excitement about quests and findings.
Still, I kept playing and got my top char to lvl 50.

It wasn't until this summer when I tried to level my lvl 7 rogue and looked
in vain at the empty LFG list, that I've decided to try looking for a new home.
I logged to multiple servers and checked POK population.
Morden Rasp caught my attention - POK size was in line with others, but
the number of lowbies was unusually high!

I've created a char at Morden and was swept off my feet by the crowds in Gloomingdeep,
and later in Greater Faydark. Maybe this is what early EQ felt like - tons of people
starting out, grouping together and having a blast!

I now have 8 chars at Morden Rasp, grouping is never a problem.
In fact, I just found a new trick - when looking at LFP screen, use the
'show all' option to see groups out of my level range. This way I can see
which of my alts can get a group quickly.

Anyway, for the people with new chars, I wholeheartedly recommend one of the
2 newbie servers - it makes all the difference in the world!

It was. Everyone was broke, no one knew where to go or what to do, and the 1-2 tradeskill addicts who could make chain armor were in full armor production mode all the time.

Fun times. =D

Banded? Feh. ;) We saved our pp and died (alot) farming sm. bronze out of unrest instead. I remember when our dorf warrior got his full set we were stoked; we felt we had the uberest tank on the planet. :D

Course, then we ran into someone in full rubi...

But still, at the time it took a good group in the low-mid twenties to get a full set of bronze.

On Morden Rasp, the population has greatly decreased. My guild which was elemental flagged has just about disbanded now. Even though the leadership had said it would never leave for WoW ... they did!

So... I went and tried the competition and absolutely love WoW .. for me (and many others it would seem) there is only one conclusion: goodbye EQ!

It's been a great 3 years in EQ and 3 household accounts but we've all moved on. It was fun the first 50 levels but after that, it's nothing but grinding and more grinding for the xp. After 3 x 65 level characters, I have no envy to grind till 70 on any of them.

Happy huntin' all.. wherever your travels may lead you.

I played for about a year or so back in 2000/2001 and enjoyed EQ a great deal. I wound up laid off and lost my high speed internet and it was no fun on dial up. I recently got my high speed back and went straight back to EQ (even though EQ2 was out). I bought the download of the trilogy from SOE and followed up with the plat pack for the other expansions. Now to get OoW....

I was curious as to what I would discover when I zoned in the first time. I remember before signing in on Ayonae Ro and the area outside Qeynos being packed with newbies. I was curious as to how many I would find on my new server, Maelin Starpyre (I think it is...at work right now). I took the tutorial route to refresh myself and was pleased to find quite a few players in the zone.

I truly hope EQ does not go away. It is the one MMORPG that has captured my interest. I have tried UO (sucks) and Anarchy Online (just not for me) and Asheron's Call 1 and 2 (didn't like). I did think about EQ2 but when I looked at the price and then at what I could get with EQ, I went back to the original. I think there will be other players like myself that look at the cost benefits (EQ + 7 expansions for $30 or 1 game, with lots of downtime already, for $50).

I look forward to being around with EQ for quite a while. I enjoy developing my characters (never power level) and just exploring Norrath. Currently my Wood Elf Ranger (Feydarq) is only level 3 and still in the tutorial zone (I owe some MOB's a thrashing before I go :) ) but...most important of all...I am having a blast!

Well, the multiple threads predicting the demise of EQ are still going.

More opinions.

I had to spend a couple days in the hospital last week (I'm fine - thanks for asking. Had something removed from a kidney & was pronounced cured) So I also had a couple days off at home.

I really didn't feel like playing any of my higher characters so I went to Morden Rasp & Ayonae Ro & started a couple babies (Iksar SK & played on a baby gnomish paladin I started & never did anything with)

Did the tutorial until I hit level 6 or so & then headed out to FoB with SK. Soloed for about 90 minutes than grouped with an Iksay necro for a couple hours. When He left I was nearly level 20 so I put LFG flag up & then spent about 4 hours in a full group in CB killing legos & such. Iksar now a teenager.

Same experience with gnome> Was bound at Kelthin & was picked up after about 3 kills in CB with a group that stayed together about 4 hours before I had to admit that the meds were telling me to go to sleep. Made enough plat for all my 9 & 15 spells for both characters, gained about 5 levels each & groups were never smaller than 5 for long.

So I checked in Drinal just because. Guildie said there had been a drop for a bit (As I so noted) but that population was increasing again & mostly on the lower levels. Which means a0new players or b) old players that are finding crowds enough & content enough to try something new.

EQ is something new every time you start something. I have enough to keep me busy for awhile. I hope EQ2 does well & I look forward to a few more years of enjoying the adventures of Norrath on EQ1

Successful & happy adventuring all!

eh, i've been on final fantasy for the past year and was wondering if there was a sharp difference between this time last year, and now on E'ci server?

I've been contemplating rejoining the ranks of EQ except for the overspammage of expansions ><. (how many are out now, 8?)

And if i were to restart, should i go to one of the newbie servers, or go back to E'ci?
