Change of fov, 1st person, 3rd person.Follow

#1 Aug 04 2004 at 6:02 AM Rating: Good
Is there any way to change your fov when in first person?
I mostly play with 3rd person but if the fov could be changed I would prolly play alot more in 1st person.
Seems to me fov is ~80 and irl your fov is ~150-180.. That high ingame would not work unless u had multiple screens but it would be nice to have fov ~100-110.
I like playing 1st person cause it feels abit more like its actually me running around but atm its hard cause of the low fow.
Help appriciated!

I don't know of a way to change FOV. If anyone does, it would likely be someone who uses multiple monitors.

Can only speak for myself but I did not answer because I thought you where talking about an Ego shooter (=and on the wrong board therefore)as FOV is not a big issue in EQ. If playing in a group most melee use 1st person, while casters use a view that allows to see the whole group. Only widespread use for 3rd person is travelling long distances.

What do YOU think?
You don't need a wider FOV. Furthermore I think you should rather visit a tech forum/board.

no idea what fov was, lol. Atari, N64, Baldurs Gate, and EQ are basically all I have to draw on. No first person shooters for me.

once you gave the definition, I also thought you were refering to f9.

Sounds like you are talking view angle though, not screen size, correct?

You can change the angle of vision as I frequently do when the (/rant on MORON) /ranf off) tank insists on positioning the mob on a hill or set of stairs.

In fact, I do it so frequently, I don't remember exactly how.

Is it right click on nothing, hold the button down to adjust the angle and then let go? That's my best guess. I'll have to log and try it to figure out what I do exactly, but I can tell you I do it routinely.

FOV cannot be changed in the game. That is hard coded in the graphics pipeline as the polygons are being manipulated for the scene being visualized. Easy to change? Yes. I do it my graphic / DX8 / DX9 / OpenGl programs. Versant only made available the F9 key to cycle through various preset scene views. Only way to change it is to offer a FOV and probably other scene offsets as the frames are being drawn in the graphics rendering.

I agree that for me, the standard first person view sucks. Has for five years. It does not have enough peripheral view that other first person shooters have, and I have never found a F9 preset toggle I have been happy with. After five years, I am just used to it, and 'spin' around a lot verifying my immediate space (I need to keep telling my group mates "I am not drunk"!).

One option though : In the normal first person view of the game, using the center scroll wheel on the mouse should move your position back. The amount moved back is variable depending on the amount the wheel is scrolled. Now, having said that, it worked with my old system, but not with my new system. Mouse driver problems. This does resolve the issue of being able to see in the immediate periphery of your space. Very good while fighting to just 'draw back' the view to check for adds.

I hope EQ2 addresses the FOV issue.

Myy suggestion is to use the F9 as needed and for the most part, get used to working with what you have. I don't particularly enjoy the FOV either, but I'm pretty sure that it's supposed to lend to play immersion (or some crap like that.) At any rate, it's not something we can alter, so either live with it or find another game that offers something more to your tastes. The MMORPG market isn't as devoid as it used to be of competition.

That might sound a bit harsh, but that's not how it's intended. I tend to view things a bit pragmatically.

I think you got rated down because of one of these:

#2. You guys dont know what FOV is.
Someone who didn't know what FOV was thought perhaps that this was patronizing.

Impatience gets rated down here for some reason.

Actually, everything gets rated down here for any possible reason. On several other recent threads many of the 'green names' have been seriously nuked for no reason I can discren. My assumption is that someone is bunched up over some assumed slight and is taking it out like a postal worker throwing a tantrum.

I'll rate you up later, when no one is looking. I don't see where you did anything wrong here.

edit: By the way, one sure way to get rated down is to post about any of the following: begging for gear/plat, talk about buying plat or characters, ask about PLing, talking about the last group of people you trained & KSed, or saying anything bad about Allakhazam's :)

I am in on this one ;-)

But seriously @BR, with only 14 posts even a single other poster can rate you down from 3.00 to 2.33 I've been told myself some time ago. So you can assume that the majority does appreciate your presence here - or at least doesn't object it.

k. :) Dont understand how it can be seen as patronizing though. I would understand if I was rated down cause I assumed that everyone knew what fov is. But hey.. Im a noob, only played EQ ~1 week, so I should be allowed to ask st00pid questions and make st00pid assumptions.. ;P
Aint there a saying that goes:
'No question is a stupid question'
If you dont ask you´ll never learn. :)

Thx for the info, would prolly never do any of that anyways.
btw, what does KSed mean?
(as I said.. Im a noobie) :)

I thought it was a reasonable question. Actually, I had no idea what FOV was - I bumped you on the rating - maybe it will help a little.

Yeah, it's a bit annoying that you can not change the FOV in first person view in EQ. If you play SWG, they have a lot more control over what you can do with your FOV in any view. I would think they would probably bring that to EQ2.

I am one of those people who cannot play well in any other view than first person. The later Might & Magic games were the ones I played a lot, and the view is similar. But I do turn around constantly and look around, and flip through the views occasionaly, just cannot seem to play using them (probably why I am so bad folling someone when not on AutoFollow, but I can get lost either way, a talent I seem to excel at).

So for anyone wondering, this can be done: have three monitors, stretch windowed mode to all 3 monitors, you'll get increased field of view, with a little stretching/distortion, but still more visible real estate.
