Pick what you want. With the PoK and books, starting location is pretty irrelevant today.

The only thing you need to be aware of as a wizard is the port spell locations. They are only sold in two places: The library in Erudin and the Library in Neriak. Fortunately, there are no races that start out KoS to both of those, so you're ok in that respect.

The only other issue is that the SoL port spells are only sold in the Neriak caster guild area (which, even un KoS folks will still have too low faction to buy from). Also, the component to transport to PoH is sold only in the cleric guild in Neriak.

This might lean one towards DE, but it's trivially easy to make a DE spell/component mule nowadays. Just have a mule that just buys stuff you need and drop it in your shared slot and you're done. Before the shared slot, this was a major PITA for non-DE wizards, and I mention it for completeness. Today, it's just a very minor annoyance (why do the DEs have the only access to some magic? Hmmm...).

About the only real thing to think about is religion. SOE is remarkably "unfair" about their treatment of religion with several classes, and wizard is probably the most obvious one. If you don't worship Sol-Ro, then you lose access to a couple spells. Um... There are no other religions that matter (no other quests or spells or items that are deity restricted for wizards that I know of). So Sol-Ro should be your choice unless you want to risk the fates that maybe SOE will add in benefits for being any other religion...

Sadly, I made my wizard agnostic before they added in the religion benes for wizard. Sigh...

Just pick what looks prettiest to you. Plane of Knowledge makes transportation effortless, so you will very seldom notice your racial disadvantages, except when it comes to a few areas.

Ok here goes with the Gbaji-lite version Smiley: smile

The race yoou choose determines which city you start in. Now that the Plane of Knowledge (PoK) permits easy transit using its system of books outside all cities, you no longer have to pass through places where you are Kill on Sight (KoS). This makes where you start less important. Hence you may choose any race more freely

A major line of Wizard spells are Ports and TLs. These are sold in these two locations (and EC tunnel for a few). Whichever race you choose will be able to use one or other of these cities to buy in unless you are very silly.

Ports to locations withing the Shadows of Luclin (SoL) expansion are only sold in Neriak. The stone needed to use the port to Plane of Hate is also sold in Neriak (I thought it was in PoK too now?).

A "mule" means an alternative character of limited purpose - there are no actual mules in the game. You could start a DE character and use the shared bank slot to pass it money and for it to pass spells etc back to your wizard.

One thing you decide at character creation and can never change is the deity your character worships - their religion if you like. You are offered several choices but choosing Solusek Ro (Lord of Fire is he?) gains you certain benefits later on.

I hope Gbaji will forgive any latitudes I have taken. Smiley: smile

For my own advice I'd just say play what appeals to you but be aware of the downsides.

Humans have lower INT and cannot see in the dark but are stronger. High Elves and Dark Elves have good INT and can see in the Dark but are not strong. Erudites have very good INT but are night-blind and feeble. Frogs are somewhere in the middle and they swim well Smiley: smile.

Personally I think humans do pretty well.

None of these benefits or advantages will cripple your character as they can all easily be cured with gear upgrades. They may just make things harder to start with.

I would say erudites are the best races of any int casters, although i'm probably wrong.

haha, i see lots of people favor gnome wizards, so what's this Plane of Knowledge, and what do you mean by using it to transport everywhere?

You have to have the Planes of Power expansion. If you don't then you really should look into getting it if nothing else. The plane of Knowledge is a place where there are teleport stones to get to quite a few other areas in game. Also it acts as a sort of meeting place/merchant mecca. It really expedites your EQ experience...I would be truly lost without the power of the PoK.

There are books all over the place that if you click on them you teleport to another spot, PoK is the hub. Here is the map for the zone
, there is a book near every newbie starting city. I know it is kind of abstractr for you right now, but it is actually a simple system, you will get the hang of it.

Along time ago, when roleplaying was a big part of the game, it took more than a month to go from level 1 to 50, travel was tough, banking and inventory was chore and much more limited, you had to carry loot over long distances, and didn't have 10 high weight reduction bags... ect... all races had "real" advantages. However, now just about any race disadvantage can be easily overcome (unless you count ugliness, then Trolls and Ogres still have a few :) ).

What does this all boil down to? Starting stats. What stats matter most to the Wizzard? Intellegence. Who has the most? Erudites. Gnomes and DEs are close behind. Being a DE makes some of the key Wizzy quests tougher (esp Epic). Furthermore, DEs are KOS in some zones you will probably want to adventure in. So, as a newb, I would stay away from that one. Gnomes can Tinker, which can be very cool, if you had the patience for Trade Skills. However, if you are not going to tinker (and 99% of all Gnomes do little or none) Erudite would be, IMHO, the best choice.

A fair argument, but here's a gnowledgable rebuttal.

Why Gnomes are Better than Erudites

1) Gnomes are pre-shrunk. Nice for dungeons or raids.

2) Gnomes don't have a forehead with its own zip code.

3) Gnomes have tinker. Even if you *don't* tinker, it's very gnice to always have that option instead of permanently disqualifying yourself from it.

4) Gnomes are probably the most neutral-factioned race out there, besides maybe human.

5) Gnomes can name themselves cool stuff like GnikGnak or Gnasher Gneebiter, or any one of a zillion gimmicky gnames.

6) Gnomes can see in the dark (easily corrected for erudites, but early on it's a minor bonus).

7) Gnomes have style.

8) Erudites are bed wetters (along with high elven males).

Erudites Rock, an Erudite of Sol Ro can go starts off Non KOS everywhere. Oh and gnomes make good toad stools for them to sit on. And you should never put a Erudite in the same catagory as a High Elf Male, that is just demeaning. Peace out.

All wizards will have very high INT as they age, it is inherant in the gear. A harder stat for them to raise is stamina (aka HP). So I would look more toward stamina and INT as secondary.

Gnomes are a very good choice due to the preshrink and tinkering and infravision. The only wiz I play (lvl 50) is a gnome.

Personally I would make a froglok if I had to do it again. Awesome starting city with guides and quests, and they look cool in a robe 8)
