Magician, hands down. Not only do they need no gear, they can summon gear to use and sell.

edit: By level 20 a magician can summon (and wear)
Food/drink
bandages/daggers
backpacks
neck w/ reagent conservation focus
shoulder w/ extended enhancement
earring w/ mana preservation
back + shield with resists
ring w/ spell haste
bracelet w/ burning affliction
bracelet w/ improved damage

A few more levels on that Ranger and you won't have any trouble at all getting over 200pp. Stonebrunt Highlands and Crystal Caverns are two great money sources starting at around mid 30's.

I agree with the Magician suggestion. I played one to about 28 and really didn't have to spend much with the exception of spells and a few pieces of equipment.

Try farming crag spiders in EK. As long as your gear is getting you by, just keep leveling, level will make it easier for you to farm $$$$. Many places are good money, provided you can get a high kill rate going.

Magician? LOL Spells, +int items, armor (yes, mages need to wear clothes too!). Sure they can summon some stuff, but a lot of it isn't even usable by the mage.

I don't think any class is cheap to raise. Everyone wants the best equipment they are able to get. The best way for you to make money to equip your char is to level. The higher you get, the more you can obtain items to use or sell. Of course, this creates a viscous cycle. The higher you get, the more you can get, the higher the things you want to get, etc. Just one of the things that keeps us logging in every day. Smiley: grin

If cheap is defined as not putting much money into a toon, then up to lvl 25 or so, Warriors are very cheap. Just Newbie armor, a Giant Militia Sword, a Shaded Sword (if you have the pp), and a cleric close by. :)

My Ranger, now 31, but true at lower levels as well, has been my consistant moneymaker of all my toons. Between Forage, which I have on ALL the time, and Track, also on all the time, it just isn't hard to bring plat in. If cheap is defined as (money in - money out = minimal), then the ranger is outstanding at least to 30. The ranger can farm 100-200pp an hour in several areas and has been able to do so since lvl 10. 50pp per hour at lvl 7. Biggest problem I have is sending the Ranger out to farm too often and not actually playing the toon at lvl.

My vote goes to monk or beastlord. Well at least until high levels when every class becomes exspensive.

Agree monk is the cheapest. the only class that benefits from having no weapons and minimal gear.

Necros need equipment. They need int/mana/hp equipment and also it helps a lot to have some regen equipment to counter the hp to mana conversion spells. Especially until you start getting you hp regen bonuses at high levels. My iksar necro 65 doesn't wear regen items anymore, but until I got to about 51 the zlandicar's heart, frost-covered cape, and robe with regen 2 were priceless.

I didn't say that equipment wasn't nice. I said you could play a necro up to moderate levels with gimp gear. I've done it. I'm talking lower 30s here hence my edit earlier about lower levels. I guess one could really level any character though through the lower levels without spending too much money.

I think maybe you aren't killing the right things. Or maybe you never farm. I made 600pp today with my lvl 11 monk on MR. I just went out and collected Shadeling silks and sold them in the bazaar. I've got less than 3 months total EQ experience. My character is not twinked. As a matter of fact, his gear sucks ***. But it's good enough to get me by for now. And when I have enough money for some gear I want, I'll get it.

When I can collect up stuff that sells for 600 pp in approx 2 hours with a level 11 monk, a level 30 ranger with track should not have problems if you set your mind to making some money....

Bard doesn't need much. I soloed a SG in oasis with my bard at level 40 naked. Of course it definately helps to have gear, but not really required. It's a class that requires a lot of patience if you want to be good though.

To this point, I have 4 characters in the 40's and 2 in 30's on one server but all of them have needed time farming plat to equip, yet the ones I have on my original server, 3 near 30, 4 lower with no twinkage, just looted items and under 300pp on the server, makes me think that a lizzy war could be your best bet. At 33 my lizzy is wearing netherbian chitin, which he looted, bronze brigandine pants from PC, and items looted from events or bought off vendors (not in the bazaar). Forage helps reduce food and drink costs, while natural regen helps a lot in combat, even soloing, against even cons.

Other combinations can help you farm plat and such, but for playing a poor character, my lizzy rocks. I still play him from time to time, leaving my higher level characters on the other server while I play a character with more "character" then gear. Other combinations can get higher stats, but even my other war with better gear, stats, and a higher level, has still been killed by a mob that I was able to kill with the lizzy, thanks to regen.

Everyone but everyone knows the cheapest character is a dark elf. They will sell anybody and anything for just a few coppers.

Well I don't think you asked the question right. It's not what's the cheapest class but what class can make the most cash that you should be asking. For that I would say druid. With the ability to get around fast and tracking, foraging. As well as several spells that will allow you to do mass farming at later levels they are the best In my opinion on making money.

You can loot chitin stuff in velketor's labyrinth. From PoK, take the great divide stone. Head west from the stone and zone into Velk's. You can loot any monster at level 1 as long as the people killing it don't want to loot it themselves. Almost nothing in GD or Velks sees invis, so its a cake walk from PoK to Velks.

I tried most classes and hands down I can tell you that if you want to Bards only need the store bought instruments.
Once you have about 100pp you can go buy some combine instruments.
Start a bard and go kite Norrath... :)

I'm not an expert on bards (having only played one on test) but once you get level 22-25 ish you can kite guards in misty thicket and make cash that way ( and kiting you dont get hit so it can be done named) and make cash there till u get enough to get yourself some good armor

I would concur that the magician is a pretty cheap character to start off with, at least in the early levels. Is the magician the cheapest....well maybe. My arguments would be:
  • All casting classes have to purchase their spells, which is probably the highest expense you have to incur. Unlike priest classes that have the option of wearing armor, pure intelligence based casting classes are restricted in purchasing quite a few types of armor.
  • To cast a pet all you need is a piece of malachite, which is easily affordable for even a level 4 character. Even high level pets only require a single piece of malachite to summon. Often the higher the level of spell the more expensive the spell components get.
  • The magician can summon a large assortment of no-rent items that can buff either himself, his pet, or the party. In a pinch the magician can summon the warrior a no-rent suit of plate and a sword for corpse recovery (hey…better than nothing and no problem destroying it once the corpse has been recovered)
  • Under level 30 the magician can easily solo, hence there are fewer people to split loot with.
  • In the very early levels the magician and pet will perform enough melee, that intelligence based items will become of useful only when melee is no longer viable. The buffed pet with summoned weapons really helps during this period of the XP grind.
  • The class has the option of performing spell research for quite a few of their spells in lieu of buying them from vendors or the bazaar. IMHO spell research when coupled with the practice runes isn't very expensive, especially when there is a pretty good market for people wanting to buy the extra spells you have researched. I normally break even or turn a small profit with spell research.

  • Other classes that may contend would be the monk, where the type of armor is very limited (in addition to how much you can carry). The necromancer is also quite affordable if you have a high base intelligence. Bone chips are even cheaper than malachite, although the necromancer doesn't have the direct benefit of summoning pet toys (although they have other very viable buffs).

I would have to say necro, though it does apply in some extent at lower levels to mages as well. A necro CAN, not that they should, get to level 50 naked. The tactics avaliable to them can be used so that they are never hit ie. fear-kiting, and DoT's are more mana-friendly (better ratio's) than a mage's DD's. The only thing that it is necessary to spend your plat on is spells. Equipment only makes a necro(again, early levels) more effecient, it is by no means required.

Well I say all classes are somewhat expensive in their own ways (some more than others) since everyone wants the "best" stuff. But I'd say rogue and monks are the cheapest.

I would agree with the rogue as well, Str gear is cheap, get a good piercer and a Defenders Lightblade for 200pp and away you go.

I wonder who would be the most expensive?

I would vote for the ranger because we are always trying to fill roles that we were not really designed for, so we need our gear to compensate. Plus we normally need good weapon for primary, secondary, 2hander, plus Bow and arrows.

Runner up I think would be the Warrior, they are all competeing for those high ratio, low delay, proccing weapons that seem to be soo expensive in the bazaar. Also the high end droppable plate armor tends to be very expensive IMO.
