From the patch message today:

Quote:
"Does your Significant other find learning EQ too difficult to learn?"
Could you be any more patronising? I imagine that any S.O reading that would be 100% LESS likely to try playing.
How to insult your prospective player base 101.

Aside from the obvious insult, is EQ really that hard to start? I don't think so, i am pretty sure that the difficulty of play is the least of the average EQ players problems.

The lack of Quality CS and refusal to fix bugs allied with a stuttering leveling curve that has a nice rounded start <level 1-10> that has good quests that have rewards fit for the effort required to complete them.
Then nothing at all worth thinking about untill 50+, did we forget about the 40 levels in the middle?
Why not add in quests that upgrade the newbie armour in the zones that SoE want us to play in, I am sure that if they put drops for all races/ classes dropping of mobs in 10 old worlds zones like Runnyeye/Eastern wastes/Frontier Mountains they would get far more people travelling to them than offering a 10% xp bonus.

I don't get it, the people at SoE must be reletivly intellegant right? So why can't they just read the boards on web sites like this and make policy based on what the players want.

my S.O plays and has done since about a week after i showed it too her, she was incredibly insulted by the patch message and i would advise any players to hide said message from anyone they are going to introduce to the game.

I find it more insulting to ME. Seems like they're insinuating that us EQ players have can have nothing other than stupid Significant others.
...which is wrong, right?

well, it deffo was tough for me. only started with Velius, Kunark and Luclin. and w/o POP it really was difficult. plus, the help files could be better, and there was no proper handbook... and the tutorial, well, its 5 years old...

and I think it also helps, to send them an email once in a while with suggestions, critics.

If this is your first mmorg, or are only moderately familiar with computers then EQ is dreadfully difficult to learn. If you already know it from other similar games, its easier - of course. Its not that any one thing is too difficult, its that there are many things hidden and not obvious to someone new. The tutorial should make that part more fun and less frustrating.

Hard for people remember what its like to be a newb to the game, but yes if your brand new to the game it can be a bit of a bear to get used to. Heck the first time I played I actually got scared cause I got lost in Qeynos North newbie hunting area (clip plane was at 0, which i didn't know at the time either).

I know my friend the very first time he played he died in the water near FP docks cause he couldn't figure out how to swim back out. Guess we just take our knowledge of the game for granted now.

But the way they worded it was kinda foolish. They made it sound like people who have played the game forever can't figure out how to swim, use a banker, etc etc.

or do you wanna be able to just sit and play

also as for the spouse thing i didnt actually see the message but to me the quote above doenst sound like an insult it sounds like a joke at all the "eq widows" and the how do i get my spouse to play threads

I like the new menu option in front of petition. it seems so far to be basically this:

"hello, you have reached the automated everquest customer support system. to speak to a real person... HAHA no, that was a good one. No, really! seriously, here are your options:
To complain about campers, press 1 now. to complain about lost or missing character items, missing gnomes, or other appendages, please press 2. wenn du auf deutsch sollst der wahlen horen, drekken mall drei, ... to find out if a quest is buggged, press 388483221, to..."

its not hard to learn to start, it would be ahrd for a newbie to function in a group in PoTime, but that is learnt as you play, maybe if your significant other is a 6yr old with a learning disability then this message is fine by me, otherwise its a stupid message

If you leave EQ for quite awhile and come back to it (after playing another title that begins with "Dark" and ends in "Camelot"), it is amazing how difficult it really is to start brand new in the world.

I'm not talking difficult in the extreme sense, where you are absolutely clueless to game content and can't even simply move forward or backwards in the world (awh, SWG memories). EQ has more of a learning curve where the first few hours you wander around not understanding how to get spells, memorize spells, fight well, etc (I had started a Druid). Or how about finding your way out of Freeport the first time to find something to fight...sheesh. You don't understand LFG or LFA or WTS or WTB. But you eventually begin to comprehend.

I was so acclimated to DAOC that EQ was a foreign country. But at least I had prior experience to prop me up a bit. A brand new MMORPG individual, walking into EQ for the first time ever, would actually be quite confused and might actually wonder what they spent their money on.

Now, to say that my significant other is a moron and not able to figure this game out... well, that is a bit harsh. She plays the Sims like a professional, whereas I'll be damned if I can get through the first day without my character peeing on the ground.

Having a person or body of people you can go to with questions makes a HUGE difference in this game. I lean heavily on this website for information. I also pick my cousin's brain as needed. Without those two resources, I would probably be half my level and ready to quit due to frustration.

It's not that I'd be unable to overcome the challenge; it's that there is a point beyond which challenge is no longer entertaining. I play in order to have fun. If I can't have any fun...why play?

EQ IS difficult if you have no EQ experience or sources of information.

My, $.02,

I’m a spouse playing the game - started playing to get quality time with hubby. We both saw the message in question here at the same time and laughed, neither one of us felt insulted at all. Perhaps because neither one of us are overly sensitive about our level of intelligence – I don’t know.

At any rate I am looking forward to getting into the tutorial. I have been playing since December and am always finding out stuff I wish I had known earlier. Hopefully the tutorial will fill in some of the gaps in my game knowledge.

Go learn Anarchy Online's UI, then come back to Everquest.

You'll be able to play EQ blind, AO's is so difficult ;)

(I *did* eventually learn it though).
